It is said to be The first national university in Vietnam, from the moment it was built, it has been one of the most prominent landmarks in Hanoi for nearly a thousand years.
At present, the Temple of Literature in Hanoi, which is divided into three sections, covers an area of more than 26,000 square meters, and the scale is not small. The entire building consists of five groups of courtyards, almost completely imitating the architectural pattern of the Qufu Confucian Temple in China. Under the horse monument, there is a pool in the front yard. Whether it is the symmetrical dignified Wenmiao Gate, the Chinese character couplet on the carved stone pillar, or the carving on the flying dragonfly, it basically inherits the Chinese style, so that Chinese tourists come here, even if Never visited, there are always a few seemingly acquainted.
The Great Hall of the Temple of Literature is hovering with a Chinese character plaque with the four characters of "Wanshi Shibiao". It is marked with "Kangxi Yushu" and there is a Confucius table in the main hall. It can be seen that Vietnam was deeply influenced by China. The influence of Confucianism, Confucius's educational thoughts and doctrines were widely spread among the large and small bureaucrats and ordinary people in Vietnam at that time. Following Confucius, like the current pursuit of stars, it was a fashionable and prevailing event in Vietnam at that time.
Now, in Hanoi, almost all locals know the Temple of Literature. Every year, the Temple of Literature will hold a few days of ceremonies, as well as calligraphy, chess, poems, cockfighting, fighting birds and other cultural entertainment. The Hanoi Confucian Temple was built in the 17th century in the Li Dynasty. It is a typical Chinese-style building. It has the same functions as the Confucian Temple in many places in China. It is also the earliest national university in Vietnam. Vietnamese students, regardless of primary school students, middle school students, and college students, will take photos here when they graduate. Our Vietnam trip happens to meet the local graduation season, and we are fortunate to witness the spark of traditional culture and modern education. The
Hanoi Temple of Literature covers an area of 26,000 square meters. The entire complex consists of five groups of courtyards. Throughout, the familiar Chinese elements can be seen everywhere. In the meantime, it seems as if walking in the ancient Chinese land, the thick Confucian culture directly hits the innermost part of the heart, and it is inevitable that the traditional Chinese culture has a long history and profoundness.
The verdant trees in the courtyard are in stark contrast to the vermilion pavilions, just like the cross-collision between the Confucian elements flowing in the air and the modern tourism industry. Visitors from all over the world leave their footprints here, silently The Confucian culture in the building also quietly affects visitors who come and go, complement each other and complement each other.

Temple of Literature in Hanoi (one of the most famous ancient relics in Vietnam)
◎ Temple of Literature
One of the most famous ancient relics in Vietnam.
The highest institution of learning during the Ly dynasty in Vietnam, it held the status of a Royal Academy and a National School, with regulations modeled after the Confucian temple in Qufu. It houses the 'Teacher of All Generations' plaque inscribed by Emperor Kangxi, which still exists today.
The Temple of Literature is famous for the 'Doctoral Steles', where lively stone turtles proudly carry the meticulously carved steles of scholars.
From ancient times to the present, students from all over Vietnam would visit the Temple of Literature during holidays to pray for academic improvement, to excel in examinations, and just yesterday, I encountered students taking graduation photos there.

Temple of Literature is a Confucian temple 🛕 building located on the south side of the capital city of Thang Long. It was built in 1070 and became Vietnam's 🇻🇳first university 🎓. Walking past Kuiwen Pavilion, you can see Tianguang Well, which is also known as Wen Lake. The square well symbolizes the earth, and the round Kuewenko symbolizes the sky, which means that the essence of heaven and earth is concentrated in the cultural and educational center.
There are 82 Jinshi stone tablets on both sides of the Tianguang Well, which are divided into two rows to form a forest of tablets, recording the names and hometowns of 1306 Jinshi (the 82nd imperial examination from 1442 to 1779). Below each Jinshi Stele is a stone turtle, symbolizing longevity. After viewing the forest of steles, walk through the Dacheng Gate and enter the Dacheng Hall, where the sacred images of Confucius and his four outstanding students are enshrined. After strolling through the Dacheng Hall, we arrived at the Imperial Academy, where the first principal of the Confucian Temple, Master Zhu Wen'an, was enshrined.

Temple of Literature - Hanoi
The Temple of Literature in Hanoi is a typical Chinese-style architectural complex, consisting of five courtyards. Outside the main gate of the Temple of Literature stands a 'dismounting stele', indicating that even the highest-ranking individuals should dismount and walk inside. The words 'Temple of Literature Gate' are prominently and solemnly displayed above the center of the main gate. On both the east and west sides of the stele courtyard, 82 doctoral steles are neatly arranged, with 41 on each side. Each stele is carried by a vividly carved stone turtle, with the names of the scholars who passed the imperial examinations over the years inscribed on them. Therefore, there is a common saying in Vietnam to encourage diligence in study: 'The golden list on stone steles will last forever.' Hanging high in the center of the Great Hall is a Chinese plaque with the four characters 'Teacher of All Ages', indicating that it was 'written by Emperor Kangxi'. Inside the main hall, there is an altar for Confucius, and on both sides, sages from China and Vietnam are honored.

Shocking! I never expected Confucius at the Temple of Literature in Vietnam to look like this
Historically, almost every city in China has a Temple of Literature, and Hanoi, Vietnam is no exception. In the Old Quarter's City Walk, you must not miss the Hanoi Temple of Literature, which is only about a 20-minute walk from the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, and can be visited together.
In 1070 AD, Emperor Ly Thanh Tong of the Ly Dynasty decided to build the Temple of Literature to the south of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long to worship Duke Zhou, Confucius, the Four Associates, and the 72 Sages, and also allowed the descendants of the royal family and nobility to study here. From the beginning, the Temple of Literature served as a national academy and was Vietnam's first higher education institution. It gradually expanded its enrollment to include the children of commoners.
At first glance, the Hanoi Temple of Literature, apart from the Vietnamese-style gate and the slightly Cambodian-style pond near the entrance, basically inherits the Chinese style. The temple faces south with its back to the north, and it is said to be built completely according to the architectural pattern of the Confucius Temple in Qufu, but its scale is incomparable to that of Qufu with its glazed tiles.
The entire complex consists of five courtyards, with passages and gates specifically reserved for the emperor's use between them. Like in China, there is a 'dismounting stele' outside the temple's main gate, where even the highest-ranking individuals must dismount and walk inside.
The main gate of the Temple of Literature is very similar to the one at the Temple of the True Martial God that I visited earlier, with soaring eaves and a typical oriental temple style. Stepping through the gate and passing the Great Loyalty Gate, you can see the towering Kuiwen Pavilion. This pavilion is extraordinary, the most famous building in the Temple of Literature, once used as a symbol by UNESCO and as a symbol of Hanoi's culture.
Although the Kuiwen Pavilion is not large, it is exquisitely crafted. The pavilion is built on four square pillars, with the upper layer made of lattice wood. There are four doors on the pavilion, symbolizing the radiance of the Kuiwen star in all directions. Below, there are two doors, known as the 'Secret Literature' and 'Stored Literature', symbolizing profound literary meaning and elegant diction.
Behind the Kuiwen Pavilion is a square lotus pond, with corridors on both sides for Confucius' 72 disciples. There are 82 stone steles in the corridor, 41 on each side, recording the names of 1306 scholars who passed the imperial examinations. The 82 stone steles of the Scholars' Archway are all carried by stone turtles, each with a different shape, reminiscent of the Forest of Steles in Xi'an. Since Vietnam does not have a 'top scholar', there is no top scholar stele, only the scholars' steles.
The Great Hall of Accomplishment is the main building of the Hanoi Temple of Literature, built in the 19th century. The overall architecture inherits the style of the Le Dynasty, with Confucius and the Four Associates enshrined in the center, an incense table in front, and a golden plaque with the words 'Teacher for All Ages' above, indicating that it was 'written by Emperor Kangxi'. It is worth mentioning this statue of Confucius; I almost didn't recognize it because the Confucius we usually see is almost always depicted as an old man, but here, Confucius is depicted as a middle-aged man, which is very special.
Here, I happened to meet a local guide and Western tourists discussing Confucius and Confucianism, which was indeed a very transcendent experience. After all, these things should be more authentic when discussed in China. However, considering that Westerners find it not as convenient to visit Vietnam as China, experiencing a taste of Chinese culture in Vietnam might be just right for them.

Students in Hanoi, Vietnam, are all coming to ask for Chinese character posters to worship Confucius
On the first day of the new year, all the streets and alleys in Hanoi are closed, almost all shops are not open for business, even the Lotte Center store is closed. I had to go to the old town for a stroll.
The Temple of Literature is really crowded with people. As one of the famous attractions in Hanoi, coupled with students and parents coming to worship Confucius, there are really too many tourists and locals inside.
A New Year's market has opened across from the Temple of Literature, with many small stalls selling trinkets, and many calligraphy stalls selling characters. Many students come to ask for a Chinese character poster to worship Confucius. I found that those who can write Chinese characters are all old grandpas, and those with white hair and beards write the best and have the best business Those with black hair and younger ones can't write Chinese characters, they all write Vietnamese calligraphy
For me, a Chinese person, seeing so many Chinese characters in Vietnam feels inexplicably intimate

The Hanoi Temple of Literature full of Chinese style
🌟Highlights:
The Hanoi Temple of Literature is a typical Chinese-style building, similar to many temples of literature in China, composed of five courtyards, where sages from China and Vietnam are worshipped. Walking through the main gate, the red brick road in the middle leads directly to the Gate of Great Chastity, with the Gate of Talent and the Gate of Virtue on either side, symbolizing the acquisition of talent and the achievement of virtue.
The brick wall of the Temple of Literature, a large part of which comes from the Hanoi Castle. In 1895, the French destroyed the Nguyen Dynasty Castle and used the castle wall to repair the damaged Temple of Literature wall. The dark grey bricks come from the Later Le Dynasty, and the red ones come from the Nguyen Dynasty.
👍Most recommended:
Walking inside, full of Chinese flavor, the lotus pond in front of the Kuixing Pavilion has no lotus flowers, leaving only a faint quiet lake. Surrounding the lotus pond on both sides is one of the most important relics of the Temple of Literature, the stele forest of scholars, and the 'Teacher of All Ages' hanging high in the Great Worship Hall, which also indicates the Kangxi Imperial Book.
The Temple of Literature is also the earliest national university in Vietnam, and many university graduates will take photos here for memory.

Iconic structure in Hanoi
This is a historical site containing stone carvings that were dated century ago. The whole complex is very nice and quiet, compared to the road noise outside. One can spend time wandering around the garden filled with old trees. Such a rare treat in Vietnam cities. It’s also good to go with a tour guide so that history can be explained more thoroughly as there were not many signs explaining. It will be a bit hard for tourists to self-explore.
Around 2-3 hours here should be sufficient. You can also read up before coming to understand more about Vietnamese culture and how this temple is considered a very important part of Vietnamese culture and history.
