Jiaxiulou, witness to the prosperity of Guiyang's history!
Jiaxiulou
Jiaxiulou was built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, and "Jiaxiu" means "outstanding scholars". Currently, Jiaxiulou is designated as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council as part of the "Wenchang Pavilion, Hehe and Jiaxiulou", and has become a must-visit attraction for tourists in Guiyang.
Jiaxiulou is divided into three parts: Fuyu Bridge, Jiaxiulou, and Cuiwei Garden, which are ancient and elegant architectural complexes. With the towering buildings of the city, the combination of ancient and modern styles echoes each other, making people sigh with emotion for the vicissitudes of history.
Visit Jiaxiu Tower around 4pm, and if you're lucky, you can see the fiery clouds. Wander around and grab some food, and when night falls, take a stroll through the bustling night market streets to see the prosperity fade away.
Address
Guizhou Province, Nanning District, Xinhua Road, Cuiwei Lane, No. 8.
Transportation
Take bus routes 15, 48, or 305 and get off at "Jiaxiulou" stop. Parking nearby is inconvenient, so it is recommended to take a taxi or public transportation.

Free admission
Business hours
All-day opening (the interior of Jiaxiulou and the buildings inside Cuiwei Garden are open from 09:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays, and entry to the garden stops at 16:30).

Guiyang - hills, forests and monkeys.
Resting at about 1200 m altitude, Guiyang is a reasonably cold city in winter for that far south. What is striking about it, is the sheer amount of green the city incorporates. It does not therefore, come as a surprise, that its main sights are actually parks and forests and animals living there. We chose to stay in the center, near where the two metro lines cross. It was a solid location, but a bit further south, closer to the Nanming river, would have been optimal. If budget is not a consideration for you booking one of the upscale hotels with a view of the river and the Jiaxiu pavilion is a great option. Taking an evening stroll along the river was pleasant, Jiaxiu pavilion and especially the bridge it sits on have a really authentic feel to it. Further west down the river there are really nice murals that combined with some 'projector magic' tell really nice stories at night. Guiyang is also known as a liquor producer, so if you spot some buildings reminding you of liquor bottles it is not your imagination. What I found a bit infuriating about the city center is how restricted its streets and pavements feel. Very rarely will a street let you cross without shoving you down to a shabby looking underpass with no working escalator. While this works great for the traffic safety, it does make a casual stroll around the city quite annoying.
But, where the Guiyang really shines and why it should be visited are its parks and forests.
To start with QianLing Mountain Park was probably the best place we went to in Guiyang. A large centrally located park in the middle of the city has everything you would want from a park. Hills, forests, small lakes, temples, great views, a cable car for those less willing to hike, a small zoo and of course the monkeys. A lot of monkeys. A lot of always hungry monkeys. While I found them great and highly entertaining in their attempts to steal and rob you of anything that can count as food, some precaution might be in order. Keep your backpacks firmly zipped, your phone unexposed and in general do not show any food unless you are willing to have it taken from you.
Apart from QianLing, Guiyang's aptly named forest park is another large park. I am actually not sure if there is an official entrance to this large patch of forest. I entered by a muddy road bypassing a construction site and exited on the other side through someone's vegetable farm. Still, the actual forest is really nice and large and there is a Red cross memorial for those interested in Wartime history.
To sum up, we liked Guiyang, it felt rather different than most big cities. Really green, the city itself a bit rundown, but also laid back.

Jiaxiu pavilion heritage landscape area is located in the mother river of Guiyang, the Nanming river fishing bay on the South of Gui mountain. Surrounded by the large river, Jiaxiu pavilion got a quite number of attractions around it namely the Fuyu bridge, International Buddhist temple, Cui Wei garden, Ji Hong bridge, Temple of Marquis among the few. These attractions and scenic spots all reflect the traditional Chinesr cultire of "harmony between man and nature" thought.

Jiaxiu Tower, Guiyang
Jiaxiu Tower is located in central Guiyang, right next to the river area. We arrived on a February evening, but it was still a nice time of year to visit. The evening is definitely the best time to come here as it is accompanied by an illuminating light show of the pavilion itself along with the surrounding buildings. The various laser dances, multicolor lighting scenes and traditional music makes this a worthwhile attraction to visit in Guiyang. I especially enjoyed the reflective aspects of the lights off the water and the pavilion and bridge areas. It is easy enough to avoid the crowded areas and find a quiet spot to yourself to take photos and videos. 🏯🏯🏯

Stunning Lights
If you're looking for a place to roam around at night in Guiyang, this is a perfect place 🏯. Evenings are stunning with all the lights. They even have light shows in the lake. There is no entrance fee to roam around the tower 💴. There are lots of restaurants and cafes nearby. The street is very lively and there is a bus stop in front of the tower.

🌃 It is especially worth mentioning that Jiaxiu Tower is even more charming at night. As night falls and the lights come on, the whole building shines brightly, reflecting in the quietly flowing Nanming River, like a fairyland on earth, breathtaking. At this moment, from any angle, Jiaxiu Tower is so stunning and harmonious, making people feel relaxed and happy.

Jiaxiu Tower
Located in Nanming District, Guiyang, Jiaxiu Tower stands on Aoji Rock, with Fuyu Bridge connecting the famous sites of Paifang City South, Jiaxiu Tower, Hanbi Pavilion, and Cuiwei Garden.
Jiaxiu Tower has different beauties during the day and night. You can visit the tower before 6 PM, where there are many collections of stone carvings, wood carvings, and calligraphy and paintings by famous people.
As night falls, the lights become dazzling, making Jiaxiu Tower even more enchanting. According to the staff, the darker the night (after 10 PM), the brighter and more beautiful the lights of Jiaxiu Tower become.

Impression of Guizhou.
Impression of Guizhou
1. Guiyang doesn't have many attractions. The famous Jiaxiu Tower is only suitable for viewing from the outside. Perhaps due to geographical limitations, Guizhou doesn't have much history or culture. During the summer vacation, the first to third floors of the Guizhou Provincial Museum were closed, which was very puzzling.
2. Guiyang's public transportation stations are scattered, and there is no subway near any of the major attractions. Buses are also congested, so it is recommended to take a taxi. Be aware that some taxi drivers may take detours, especially those who seem enthusiastic and talkative. We personally experienced a taxi ride that should have cost around 10 yuan, but the driver charged us 24 yuan.
3. Guizhou's attractions are very scattered, especially in the endless mountains. The main mode of transportation is by bus.
4. The most impressive aspect of Guizhou's attractions is the sightseeing bus. All major attractions have sightseeing buses, with prices separate from entrance tickets. However, without the sightseeing bus, it is impossible to continue the visit.

Guizhou | Jiaxiu Tower in Guiyang | The Bright Pearl by the Nanming River
In Guiyang, Guizhou, there is a renowned Jiaxiu Tower. It is like a bright pearl, embedded by the Nanming River.
Jiaxiu Tower, built in the Ming Dynasty, has stood tall through hundreds of years of vicissitudes. It is a symbol of Guiyang's historical culture, carrying the memory and glory of the city.
The pavilion has three stories, three eaves, and four corners with pointed roofs. Its red beams and green tiles shine brightly under the sun. The flying eaves and upturned corners resemble an eagle about to take flight, full of dynamic beauty. Climbing up Jiaxiu Tower and looking into the distance, one can see the shimmering Nanming River, the weeping willows on both banks, and the bustling yet tranquil cityscape.
Jiaxiu Tower at night has a unique charm. The brilliant lights reflect off the river, creating a dreamy and magical scene. At this moment, it feels like traveling through time back to ancient days, experiencing the weight of history and the richness of culture.
With its unique architectural style and profound cultural connotations, Jiaxiu Tower has become a beautiful landscape in Guiyang, Guizhou. It is not just a tower, but an art hall and a witness to history, attracting countless tourists to admire and savor it.

Summary of Three Days of Eating, Drinking, and Playing in Refreshing Guiyang!
Overall Impression
The Guiyang trip has finally come to a perfect end!
1. We actually stayed in Guizhou for 7 days, using Guiyang as the center for day trips to Huangguoshu Waterfall, Libo Xiaoqikong, and Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village. We spent the rest of the time resting in Guiyang, so the Guiyang itinerary was relatively relaxed.
2. The food in Guiyang is delicious, but the attractions are not particularly outstanding. We didn't go to Qianling Mountain Park because we are afraid of monkeys. The weather in Guiyang is quite cool, making it suitable for summer vacations. Traveling off-peak is very comfortable.
PS: For strategies on Huangguoshu Waterfall, Libo Xiaoqikong, and Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, you can check my related posts on the homepage. I hope it helps everyone.
Daily Route
1. Arrive in Guiyang at noon - Gui Chu Sour Soup Beef Hotpot (queue in advance) - Jiaxiu Tower - Hotel rest - White House and Twin Towers night view
2. Liu Guang Men Aunt Mao's Glutinous Rice - Guizhou Provincial Museum - Minsheng Street Food Snacks - Hotel rest - Evening casual walk and snacks
3. Old Guiyang Beef Noodles - Huaxi Yelang Valley - Baked Pot - Guizhou Nationalities Museum - Hotel rest
4. Catholic Church - Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital Mooncakes - Note Duo Duo Powder Hotpot (go as soon as it opens or queue in advance) - Hotel rest and return trip
Warm Tips
1. Guiyang buses and subways require pre-recharge on Alipay, and the balance can be refunded. I used Cloud QuickPass directly. Buses and subways share one QR code, but you need to bind a bank card.
2. Guiyang has many underground passages, and you might not find the exit direction. Pay attention to navigation. Few underground passages have escalators or elevators.
3. Accommodation is at the Fountain Pool, about a 15-20 minute walk from Minsheng Street Food Street. It is recommended to stay near a subway station. Subway Line 1 connects Guiyang North Station and Guiyang Station, suitable for sisters who need high-speed rail travel.
4. The Guizhou Provincial Museum can be reserved on the same day during the off-season. There are free explanations at 9:30 and 14:00, lasting 2 hours, covering the 1st to 3rd floor exhibition halls. It is worth it. You can rent audio guides and paid manual explanations, which can be consulted at the service desk.
5. Huaxi Yelang Valley is more fun and photogenic than expected. The tour time is 1-2 hours. Go early to avoid crowds. There will be a Nuo opera performance at 12 o'clock.
6. Wenchang Pavilion is currently under maintenance and not open. Don't make a wasted trip.
7. Liu Guang Men Aunt Mao's Glutinous Rice can be reserved on WeChat one day in advance or queued on-site. We queued on-site at around 7:20 and waited for about 15 minutes. It is recommended to go early.
8. Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital Mooncakes can be purchased inside the staff canteen from the north gate without queuing. There is SF Express at the entrance.
Food Recommendations
All Guiyang food is delicious and not disappointing.
Recommended: Gui Chu Sour Soup Beef Hotpot > Note Duo Duo Powder Hotpot, Guai Lu Rice, Liu Guang Men Aunt Mao's Glutinous Rice, Yu Niang Niang Crispy Potatoes, Si Wa Wa, Ice Slurry, Chang Wang Noodles, Shan Hua Yogurt (ice cream is delicious)
Average: Broken Crisp Bun, Bowl Cake, Crispy Rice Cake, Rice Cake Porridge, Dan Jia Fragrant Crispy Duck

🎈When summer arrives, my heart starts flying towards Guizhou. This refreshing city has an irresistible charm.😍
🌟【Food Paradise, A Feast for the Taste Buds】
🥘Sour soup beef and sour soup fish are tangy and appetizing, boosting your appetite. The rich broth of bean and rice hotpot fills every bite with happiness. The unique flavor of Duoduo powder hotpot is unforgettable. The combination of Lei's tofu balls and sour soup crispy rice is simply perfect. The griddle is the best choice for a late-night snack, with various ingredients cooked to perfection. Guizhou is also a paradise for potato lovers, with roasted potatoes and diced potatoes in glutinous rice exuding a charming aroma. Intestine and blood noodles, old vegetarian noodles, and crispy noodles are all so delicious they make you cry.😋
🌟【Picturesque Scenery, Nature's Masterpiece】
🌳Guizhou is a true city of mountains and water, with mountains blending into the city. The undulating contours of the mountains are faintly visible among the buildings, giving a mysterious and beautiful feeling. There is no support from plains here, but it has a unique charm. Scholars say Guizhou is a "Southwest-flavored" garden city, and it's not an exaggeration at all. Here, you can feel the magic of nature.
🌟【Leisurely Life, A Haven for the Soul】
🎇Guizhou's nightlife is rich and colorful, with bustling streets and numerous stalls. There is no hustle and bustle or pressure of big cities here, only the comfort of food and life.😃
💥Where does Guizhou's "refreshing" come from?
🏔First, the pleasant temperature is a major highlight. Guizhou is located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, with cool mountain breezes, abundant water vapor, and frequent rain. The average summer temperature is around 23°C, making it a perfect summer resort. Even Wang Yangming praised Guizhou: "The banana leaves in front of the eaves are green like a forest, and the long summer is free from heat."
🏔Secondly, the rich and interesting life makes people feel extremely happy. Guizhou is a perfect combination of ancient and trendy, with many elements loved by young people. People living here have a high sense of happiness.🥰

Ancient Charm and Modern Elegance: Exploring the History and Beauty of Jiaxiu Tower in Guiyang
Jiaxiu Tower is a famous ancient building located on the Nanming River in Guiyang, known as the "Southern City Landmark." It stands as a testament to Guiyang's cultural history and serves as a symbol in the development of Guiyang's culture. It was first built in the 26th year of the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1598 AD) with the initial intention of encouraging academic excellence in Guizhou, providing a place for young scholars to study and thus changing the scarcity of talent in the region. Jiaxiu Tower consists of four parts: Fuyu Bridge, Hanbi Pavilion, the main building Jiaxiu Tower, and Cuiwei Garden. The Jiaxiu Tower itself is a three-story, three-eave, four-cornered pavilion with a pointed roof, standing about 22.9 meters high. Its unique architectural structure makes it unparalleled in the history of ancient Chinese architecture.
Jiaxiu Tower is not only an ancient building but also a beautiful scenic spot that integrates the beauty of mountains and waters. Inside the tower, there are eight stone inscriptions from the Qing Dynasty, and the long couplet at the entrance, consisting of 174 characters, fully showcases the profound cultural heritage of Jiaxiu Tower. The Fuyu Bridge in front of the tower resembles a white dragon lying on the waves, with the small pavilion "Hanbi Pavilion" on the bridge, the "Hanbi Pool" and "Shuiyue Terrace" under the bridge, and the Cuiwei Pavilion to the south of the bridge, together forming a beautiful picture.
Cuiwei Garden is another important part of the Jiaxiu Tower scenic area. Originally known as Nan'an, it is a Suzhou-style garden courtyard from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This place was once where Wang Yangming lectured, leaving behind many footprints and poems of literati and scholars.
Jiaxiu Tower is not only a carrier of historical culture but also a symbol of modern civilization. At night, when the lights first come on, Jiaxiu Tower becomes brilliantly illuminated, becoming a focal point of historical culture and modern civilization, showcasing the spirit of "Jiaxiu Tianxia."

Thanks to the hospitality of Guizhou Tourism in 2024, teachers and people from Jiangsu can visit for free. I must go. First flight to Guiyang, with half a day to spare, I can't miss it. After dropping off my luggage, I head straight to the North Cathedral. One side is Chinese architecture, the other side is Western architecture, which is quite unique. Then it's time to find some food.
Traveling through Guizhou, crossing mountains and rivers, there's plenty to eat and drink. Guiyang is said to have many snacks, and indeed, Zhengxin Street, Minsheng Road, and Caijia Alley are all filled with food stalls, one after another, making it impossible to try them all.
Considering I only have one stomach, I had to restrain myself and only tried the Love Tofu and Crispy Rice Cake, which were enough to fill me up. The Love Tofu has the famous Zheergen inside. It was my first time trying it, and it did taste a bit strange, not something I could get used to. The Crispy Rice Cake, on the other hand, was very delicious, especially when paired with freshly squeezed Rosa roxburghii juice. The 15 yuan per cup Rosa roxburghii juice here is authentic, with a bittersweet taste. The next day, I went to the Huangguoshu Scenic Area, where the 5 yuan per cup Rosa roxburghii juice sold everywhere was fake, extremely bitter, and a rip-off!
It's said that the night view of Jiaxiu Tower is more beautiful than during the day, so I waited by the Nanming River for the lights to come on. The century-old stone road is truly shiny, polished by the footsteps of tourists from all over the world.
At 7:48 PM, just as the sun was setting, the lights finally came on, adding a touch of brilliance compared to the daytime. At this moment, the crowd was bustling, egrets were flying, the evening breeze was gentle, and the summer night was full of joy.

Checking in at Jiaxiu Tower, the number one scenic spot in Guiyang
Where is the most famous place in Guiyang city? Undoubtedly, it is Jiaxiu Tower.
Jiaxiu Tower is located on the Nanming River and was first built in 1598. The building is based on a huge rock in the river, and it has been repaired and renovated through the ages. The existing structure was rebuilt in the first year of the Xuantong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty.
Jiaxiu Tower has three levels, with white stone balustrades. The structure narrows with each ascending level, and it is about 20 meters high from the bridge to the top of the tower. The Nanming River flows past the tower, forming the Hanbi Pond; on the side of the tower, the stone arch 'Floating Jade Bridge' connects the two banks, and there is a small pavilion on the bridge named 'Hanbi Pavilion'; the whole structure features vermillion beams and green tiles, with a three-story, three-eaved, four-cornered spire roof.
Jiaxiu Tower is a symbolic landscape of Guiyang city and also a cultural landmark of Guiyang.
Location: No. 8 Cuiwei Alley, Nanming District, Guiyang City.

The iconic building of Guiyang - Jiaxiu Tower
Jiaxiu Tower is the iconic building of Guiyang, located at No. 8 Cuiwei Alley, Nanming District, in the center of Guiyang city. It was built in the 28th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty. The construction was organized by the then Governor of Guizhou, Jiang Dong, who used a huge stone in the river that resembled a divine turtle as the foundation stone. The purpose was to foster a generation of talented individuals from Guizhou, to be outstanding in the world. This ancient building, which is over 400 years old, seems out of place in today's bustling city, yet it displays the profound culture of Guiyang, adding a touch of ancient charm to the modern city.

Jiaxiu Tower and Wenchang Pavilion
Jiaxiu Tower, located at No. 8 Cuiwei Alley, Nanming District, Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, stands on the Nanming River. It was first built in the 26th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1598), with a huge rock in the river as its foundation. The building has been repaired and reconstructed through various dynasties, and the existing structure was rebuilt in the first year of the Xuantong era of the Qing Dynasty (1909). Jiaxiu Tower has three levels, each with white stone balustrades that taper with each ascending level, rising about 20 meters from the bridge to the top of the tower; the Nanming River flows past the tower, forming the Hanbi Pond; a stone arch bridge named 'Floating Jade Bridge' connects the two banks beside the tower, with a small pavilion on the bridge called 'Hanbi Pavilion'; the whole structure features red beams, green tiles, and a three-layered, four-angled spire roof. Jiaxiu Tower is a witness to the history of Guiyang and a landmark in the cultural development history. On March 28, 2008, Jiaxiu Tower, as part of 'Wenchang Pavilion and Jiaxiu Tower', was designated by the State Council as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
Wenchang Pavilion, also known as Wenchang Tower or Yangzhou Wenchang Pavilion, is a Ming Dynasty building in the architectural style of Kui Xing Lou. It is located at the intersection of Wenchang Middle Road and Wenhe North Road in Guangling District, Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, covering an area of 160 square meters. The pavilion is about 24 meters high, with three layers and three sets of eaves, a round top, covered with tube tiles, and topped with a gourd-shaped finial. The pavilion is an octagonal three-tier brick and wood structure, with archways on all four sides of the ground floor, connecting to the streets. In the ninth year of the Hongzhi era of the Ming Dynasty (1496), the Wenjin Bridge was built over the river to lead directly to the prefectural school, and in the thirteenth year of the Wanli era (1585), the Wenchang Pavilion was added on top of the Wenjin Bridge to enshrine the Wenchang Emperor. In the twenty-third year of the Wanli era (1595), the pavilion was destroyed by fire and rebuilt the following year. It was repaired again during the Qing Dynasty. Today, only the Wenchang Pavilion remains of the Yangzhou prefectural school building complex.
