Visiting the Four Major Grottoes - First Visit to Maijishan Grottoes
In order to make up for the regret of the "four missing one" of the four major grottoes in China, in the golden autumn of October 2024, I had the honor to visit the Maijishan Grottoes in Tianshui City, Gansu Province. This is a cultural journey through thousands of years. Maijishan Grottoes, together with Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes, and Yungang Grottoes, are known as the four major grottoes in China. They are famous for their exquisite clay sculpture art and are known as the "Oriental Sculpture Exhibition Hall".
Maijishan got its name because the mountain is like a stack of wheat stacks. The grottoes were excavated on the steep cliffs on the south side of the mountain, and the earliest excavation was in the Later Qin (384-417) period (second only to Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes). There are 221 existing caves, a total of 3938 various statues, 10632 bodies, and a total of more than 1,000 square meters of murals. These statues have been preserved intact after thousands of years of wind and rain, showing the superb skills and deep religious feelings of ancient craftsmen.
When visiting Maijishan Grottoes, I was deeply attracted by those lifelike clay statues. Before the trip, I read the introduction of the little Sami in the 133rd cave. With his innocent smile, he was called the "Oriental Smile"; the sitting Buddha in the 44th cave, his faint smile was known as the "Oriental Beauty", showing a kind of transcendence. The tranquility and tranquility of the world. I wanted to come here to see the honor, but unfortunately it is not open to ordinary tourists as a "special cave". This is also a means to protect these precious cultural relics. We listened to the explanation and watched many grottoes along the tour route. This is not only a treasure trove of art, but also a witness to history. The statues and murals here reflect the cultural exchanges on the Silk Road and integrate the artistic styles of the East and the West. The flying murals in the grottoes, with their unique "thin meat sculpture" technique, show a strong three-dimensional sense, which is the product of the integration of Chinese and Western cultures. The short 3-hour trip to Maijishan Grottoes is joyful. This is a baptism of the soul and a journey to deepen the understanding of ancient Chinese culture.

That day, the Maijishan Grottoes were shrouded in misty rain in the early morning, like a hazy ink painting.
That day, the Maijishan Grottoes were shrouded in misty rain in the early morning, like a hazy ink painting. We were fortunate to encounter the misty rain in Maiji, and the ethereal rain added a bit of mystery and tranquility to the entire grotto.
In the afternoon, when we arrived at Xianren Cliff, the dark clouds quietly dispersed, and the blue sky and white clouds appeared leisurely, and the comfortable scenery was refreshing. Looking far away from the west cliff, I couldn't help but think of the master monks who once lived here. They could see such pleasant scenery early in the morning every day, which is really enviable.
The process of climbing the mountain is really difficult, as if to "send" people away, but when you finally reach the west cliff, looking at the lush mountains and blue sky and white clouds, all the fatigue instantly dissipates, and everything is worth it. This is probably the meaning of climbing, measuring the world with your feet, and feeling the charm of nature with your soul.
About Xianren Cliff, it is located in Maiji District, Tianshui City, Gansu Province. It is an important part of the Maijishan Scenic Area and is known as a national AAAAA tourist attraction. It started in the Northern and Southern Dynasties and has a history of nearly 1,600 years. The existing temples and buildings and repairs of the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and some clay sculptures are works of the late Northern Wei Dynasty. For a long time, this has been a holy place where Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism coexist, and it has integrated rich religious culture.
The scenic area is composed of three cliffs (Che Cliff, West Cliff, and South Cliff), five peaks (Yuhuang Peak, Baogai Peak, Xianzhu Peak, Dongya Peak, and Xiya Peak), and six temples (Mulian Temple, Shilian Temple, Tielian Temple, Hualian Temple, Shuilian Temple, and Lingying Temple, among which Lingying Temple is the general name of Xianren Cliff Temple) and Xianren Lake, etc., perfectly showing the combination of natural landscape and cultural landscape.

The Call of Maiji Mountain
Maiji Mountain rises into the clouds, the grottoes reveal ancient charm.
Silent for a thousand years, the Buddha statues and colorful murals tell of the past.
On an early summer afternoon, with the sun shining just right, I embarked on a journey to the Maiji Mountain Grottoes. My heart was full of anticipation because this was not just a simple trip, but a profound dialogue with a thousand years of history.
Upon arrival, I was first captivated by the towering peaks. Maiji Mountain, a mountain bearing heavy history, seemed like a sage quietly narrating stories of a thousand years. As I walked along the mountain path, every step felt like I could sense the sediment of history.
Entering the grotto area, I was stunned by the sight before me. The lifelike Buddha statues and the colorful murals seemed to showcase the wisdom and craftsmanship of ancient artisans. I carefully observed each statue, trying to read the vicissitudes of a thousand years from their eyes.
During the tour, I was fortunate to meet a scholar who had deeply studied the Maiji Mountain Grottoes. He told me about the history, cultural background, and the stories behind each Buddha statue. His explanations gave me a deeper understanding of the charm of these grottoes. It turns out that each Buddha statue and mural carries the lives, beliefs, and pursuits of ancient people.
Besides awe and reverence, I also gained some unique experiences on this journey. For example, in a corner of the grotto, I discovered a beautiful scene where the light just happened to shine on a Buddha statue. That beam of light seemed like a divine gift, making the statue more sacred and solemn. I stood there quietly, feeling the interplay of light and shadow, as if I had a wonderful resonance with the craftsmen from a thousand years ago.
Moreover, I particularly liked the natural environment of the Maiji Mountain Grottoes. The grottoes are built into the mountain, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. Standing on the terrace of the grotto, looking out at the distant mountains and fields, I felt the tranquility and harmony of nature. This perfect combination of nature and culture made me deeply appreciate the unique charm of the Maiji Mountain Grottoes.

Tianshui Spicy Hotpot Trip ∣ Jiaolong Temple, A Journey of Purification!
👍 Most Recommended: Jiaolong Temple was originally called Wuming Temple. During the reign of Emperor Hui of Jin, it was renamed 'Jiaolong Temple' because two rivers intersect here, resembling two giant dragons. It is one of the ancient temples in the area.
❤ Recommended Reason: Jiaolong Temple is said to be the place where the ancestor of humanity, the Old Mother, transformed into Taiji and evolved all things. The Old Mother of Wuji is the ancestor of the human ancestors such as Fuxi, Nuwa, Shennong, and Xuanyuan. The temple faces south and is symmetrical along the east-west axis. Within the temple, there are various halls built according to the mountain's terrain, including the Old Mother Palace, the Three Emperors Hall, the Three Teachings Hall, the Laozi Hall, the Great Buddha Hall, the Great Achievement Hall, the Wenchang Hall, the Guanyin Hall, and the Zhenjiang King Hall.
✅ Must Experience:
1. The distance from the temple gate to the Old Mother Palace at the mountain top is about 1 kilometer. Along the way, there are large fields of crops and vegetables, winding mountain roads, and dense forests providing shade, with a refreshing coolness that is invigorating. Climbing up the steps, the ancient architectural complex of Jiaolong Temple appears tranquil and solemn amidst the green trees.
2. Monks and practitioners live in the temple, and they are very warm and kind. At mealtime, they will sincerely invite you to dine in the restaurant. The vegetarian meal is very clean and hygienic, and it is worth experiencing!
🎫 Ticket: Free
🚉 Transportation Guide: The address is located within the Maiji Mountain Scenic Area, Maiji Village, Maiji Town, Maiji District, Tianshui City, along County Road 633.
🚌 Public Transportation: Take bus No. 34 or 37 to Maiji Town Government Station, then walk about 700 meters to reach the temple.
🚗 Self-driving: Navigate to Jiaolong Temple in Maiji District, Tianshui. Note that the entrance to the village where the temple is located is a five-way intersection. After crossing the bridge, go to the right front (not the right turn, which is the second right), and proceed less than 100 meters to reach the temple.
❤️ Tips:
1. The temple has Jiaolong Academy, which provides free vegetarian meals and accommodation.
2. The so-called cultural relics exhibition room on the map is actually the monks' living quarters, and there is nothing inside!

Tianshui Maijishan Grottoes, a cure for acrophobia
🌟Highlights:
Maijishan is one of the four major grottoes in China. It is recommended to go in the morning. According to previous guides, many people mentioned that it takes 2 hours to queue up the mountain, the management is somewhat chaotic, and the queuing and cutting in line routes are unreasonable. When we went in the morning, we didn't have to queue for long, and the weather was nice, not too hot. Otherwise, queuing for several hours in the hot weather would probably kill all interest. When we were coming down, we noticed a long queue had already formed on the way up. There is no way back throughout the journey, but there isn't much time to take photos either because people behind keep moving forward, and staff keep urging you along the way. You can only take a quick look. Besides some that can be seen directly from the outside, many are behind iron nets, making them hard to see clearly. On the way, we heard other tourists say that compared to Longmen and Dunhuang, it falls a bit short.
👍Most recommended:
Pay special attention to Cave 4, which has murals. Then you can walk to Xiaoyoudongtian. It is said that it has a better atmosphere on rainy days, with misty rain over Maiji, but we didn't see it.
👎Least recommended:
Be careful of the photo traps. A few photos cost 20 yuan, which is not worth it, especially since the photos are not well taken.

Explore the ancient relic of a thousand years—Maijishan Grottoes
Known as the 'Oriental Sculpture Gallery', it is the only royal grotto built on a cliff. It has undergone excavation and renovation for over 1600 years through the dynasties of Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Ming, and Qing.
The spectacular stone carving art is breathtaking, allowing one to appreciate the wisdom and unique craftsmanship of the ancients.
1: Navigate from the city center (recommended to stay in Qinzhou District) to Immortal Cliff (two hours is enough for the visit). It is advised to take the scenic area shuttle bus up and down the mountain.
2: Navigate from Immortal Cliff to Maijishan Grottoes, find a private parking lot at the entrance of the scenic area (10 yuan for unlimited time parking). The scenic spot is divided into internal and external areas for visiting, with a significant difference in ticket prices . It is still recommended to take the scenic area shuttle bus up and down the mountain, and the visiting time is two and a half hours.
3: The scenic spot is divided into Line 1 and Line 2, and after purchasing a ticket, you can only choose one to visit. It is recommended that the elderly and those who are afraid of heights choose Line 2.
4: The last picture includes a distribution map of Tianshui spicy hotpot, which really tastes good. For two people with average appetites, ordering about 30 yuan worth of dishes and a serving of hand-rolled noodles is enough . Big eaters can skip this.

Maijishan Grottoes
Visiting Maijishan Grottoes in winter, there are few people. The color of Maijishan is monotonous, but it does not affect the visit to Maijishan Grottoes. A unique mountain peak shaped like a wheat ear, from the Northern Wei Dynasty, the ancients used the trees of Maijishan to stack up to more than 80 meters, and carved Buddha mud statues from top to bottom. After the efforts of several generations such as the Northern Wei and Northern Zhou, there are 194 grottoes, including 54 grottoes on the east cliff and 140 grottoes on the west cliff. There are more than 7800 mud sculptures, stone mud sculptures, and stone carvings. The largest statue, the Big Buddha on the east cliff, is 15.8 meters high, and there are more than 1000 square meters of murals. Maijishan Grottoes are famous for their danger, early establishment, and uniqueness.

Colorful day at Maijishan Grottoes
Had a beautiful day exploring all the Grottoes of Maijishan, the view from the Grottoes is maybe more beautiful than the carvings themselves.
🦵🏽Arrive earlier in the day to beat the tourists and leave before the heat of the day.
🦵🏽Pay for the shuttle bus, the walk to the tourist centre is really far and you have to climb up Maijishan as well. Don't exhaust yourself.
🦵🏽The caves and mountain are worth viewing but be aware, to protect the statues there is metal wire fences over almost everything, making it difficult to see and photograph.
🦵🏽Expect a lot of attention, I had a lot of people pointing out the 老外 to their friends all day 😓

When you don't go to Maiji Mountain, you don't really understand the essence of the grotto, and you can still see the continuous stream of colorful forests in this season. Don't miss it. Maiji Mountain is a lonely mountain rising from the ground. It stands steeply and stands tall. It looks like a rural wheat stubble. It is 1,742 meters above sea level and 142 meters high. It cannot be called a mountain in the true sense. It is just a Danxia landform. However, there are more than 200 caves, such as the Hidden House, more than 7,000 pieces of clay sculptures and stone carvings, and more than 1,000 square meters of murals, known as the Oriental Sculpture Exhibition Hall. The red sandstones that make up the Maiji Mountain are bright and red like the morning glow.
[PS] Normal adult fare is 90 yuan, half price for some people and free of charge.
