France 🇫🇷 Paris - Napoleon's tomb
#100WaysOfTravel
Napoleon's tomb is the monument erected at Les Invalides in Paris to keep the remains of Napoleon following their repatriation to France from Saint Helena in 1840, or retour des cendres, at the initiative of King Louis Philippe I and his minister Adolphe Thiers.
Under the authority of Louis XIV, the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart had the Invalides' royal chapel built from 1677 onwards. The Dome was Paris' tallest building until the Eiffel Tower was erected. The many gilded decorations remind us of the Sun Kingm who issued an edict ordering the Hôtel des Invalides to be built for his army's veterans.
During the Revolution, the Dome became the temple of the god Mars. In 1800, Napoleon I decided to place Turenne's tomb there and turned the building into a pantheon of military glories.
In 1840, Napoleon had been buried on Saint Helena Island since 1821, and King Louis-Philippe decided to have his remains transferred to Les Invalides in Paris. In order to fit the imperial tomb inside the Dome, the architect Visconti carried out major excavation work. The body of the Emperor Napoleon I was finally laid to rest there on 2 April 1861.
During the Second World War, the site was turned into a barracks by the occupying force, but the Morin family, who lived on the premises, secretly sheltered Allied pilots there for three years.
The Dome also houses Vauban's mausoleum, the graves of Napoleon II (also known as "The Eaglet"), Joseph and Jérôme Bonaparte, the Generals Bertrand and Duroc, and the famous Marshals Foch and Lyautey.

Tomb of Napolean
The Tomb of Napolean was not on my list of places to visit when I arrived in Paris, but it was one of the most memorable sites I stopped by during my 3-day trip. The tomb is truly fit for an emperor, with an impressive gold dome, a beautifully decorated chapel, a sarcophagus, statues, and accompanying tombs of family members and military leaders and heroes. Napolean’s Tomb is also attached to a Military Museum, which is fitting for remembering one of the greatest military generals in history.

The most famous tomb in France 🇫🇷
#francetrip
Visiting the Tomb of Napoleon in Paris was an unforgettable experience! 🇫🇷 Located in the stunning Hôtel des Invalides, this site is a must-see for history lovers. The entrance fee was €14, which also includes access to the Army Museum, a great deal if you ask me. As soon as I entered the majestic Dôme des Invalides, I was struck by the grandeur of the place. The golden dome is absolutely magnificent, shining brightly against the Parisian sky, and the interior is just as impressive. ✨🏛️
Napoleon’s tomb is right in the center, encased in a massive red quartzite sarcophagus. Standing there, you can’t help but feel the weight of history. The whole space is designed to feel grand and imposing, with marble floors, ornate sculptures, and detailed mosaics surrounding the tomb. It’s like stepping into another era. 🏺🗿 After spending time at the tomb, I explored the rest of the complex, including the Army Museum, which has fascinating exhibits on France’s military history.
The nearby gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll, and from there, it’s just a short walk to the Seine River and the Eiffel Tower. 🗼 Before leaving, I grabbed a coffee at a nearby café, taking

The Emperor of the French
In the City of Light is the tomb of one of Europe’s most renown figures, part of the complex of Les Invalides containing museums within walking distance of the tomb.
The mixture of 19th century architecture with ancient Roman motif shows their chosen aesthetics during the time of Napoleonic France.
Napoleon’s son’s tomb has a marble statue of him dressed specifically demonstrating this mixture of ancient and earlier modern style.
