Cost: 100,000 rupiah (about 500 rubles) Everything starts at 7:30 pm Traditional Balinese dances are spectacular, vibrant, beautiful, and fantastical. It's an incredible art form, encompassing costumes, music, and movement. The actors even dance with their eyes and fingertips! I'd never seen anything like it before, and I was absolutely delighted! It's fascinating to experience in person the culture depicted on all Indonesian rupiah banknotes. We went to several performances: 1) Kecak Fire & Trance Dance at Pura Puseh Temple (held Thursday and Sunday) – this was our first and most impressive. About 40 men from one community, bare-chested, sit in a circle and sing rhythmic melodies in unison. Inside, actors dance scenes from the Ramayana epic. The entire event culminates in a trance dance: a rider on a pretend horse walks across burning coals accompanied by the chorus's singing. The purpose of this ritual dance is to protect the community from all evil forces. 2) Women's Kecak & Fire Dance at Pura Batukaru (every Tuesday) Here, scenes from the Ramayana are also performed, but the chorus is female. About 40 girls, women, and grandmothers of all ages sing rhythmic melodies together. The entire event culminates in a ritual dance on burning coals performed by a man. 3) Chandra Mati, Ladies' Orchestra & Dance Troupe at Water Palace (every Tuesday) This is a traditional gamelan orchestra, but performed by women. They also perform beautiful dance numbers. By the way, daytime admission to the temple costs 50,000 rupees. So, you get two things in one – you can see the concert and stroll around the grounds. It's dark by then, but the atmosphere is magical. 4) The Barong dance is one of the most iconic. We observed it by chance in the Monkey Forest and in front of the Pura Dalem Puri Peliatan temple during the festival – here it was most authentic and spectacular. The Barong is a mythical creature, a force of good and protector of the island. Its images can be seen almost everywhere, starting from the airport. It resembles a large dragon-lion. The "animal" is controlled in sync by two people, performing a ritual dance to the sounds of a gamelan. 5) Legong, Barong & Keris Dance - 3 in 1, at Pura Dalem (every Thursday) This is a fusion of dance, Barong, and a theatrical performance featuring scenes from the Mahabharata epic. Legon is a more subtle, light, and graceful form of classical Balinese dance. It is performed by young dancers to the sounds of a traditional gamelan orchestra. The final scene features men in a trance, stabbing themselves with keris daggers, remaining unharmed, signifying the victory of good over evil (this, compared to the firewalking, was more of a demonstration). P.S. Ubud Palace and Water Palace host different performances every evening. Tickets are available everywhere – they are sold right on the streets. It's more convenient to come to the temple and buy them on site to avoid confusion about what, where, and when. It's best to arrive at least half an hour early to ensure you have good seats, as there are many different venues. They are taken in any order. In the center of Bali, you'll find the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces. It takes about an hour and a half to drive from Denpasar to Jatiluwih. These terraces are very picturesque, but there is no infrastructure there. Tirta Gangga is a water palace, which I think is a small but very beautiful park located in the eastern part of Bali. Pura Lempuyang Luhur is a very popular spot where enterprising Balinese take photos through a phone. The queue is enormous, so it's best to arrive right at opening time. In the northern part of the island, you'll find the most beautiful waterfalls, such as Sekumpul, which is 80 meters high and the largest waterfall complex on the island. Banyumala is very photogenic with good access. Gitgit is located near Lovina and is great to visit along with dolphin watching. Bali is unique and diverse.
