One cold afternoon in Tokyo

Our Japan trip was quick but memorable. We went to the Euno Zoo and Park and we had the most of our experience. Japan is such a great country. I noticed how polite their locals were to us, they were so friendly and respectful. You cannot see any clutter in the area. Everything was so orderly, no wonder they are so advanced and first in terms of almost everything not only in Asia but in the world as well. I am so in love with this country. Famous Panda Bear Xiang Xiang

#tokyo Ueno Zoo is Japan’s oldest zoo and home to over 200 animals including the giant pandas for which it is famous.The zoo also offers scheduled 45-minute guided tours twice per day where tourist can ask questions and better understand about the animals. As for now it is extremely difficult to get the ticket to enter the Zoo due the the popular Panda name Xiang Xiang is due to return to China . Lucky for me I manage to see her last year when it not that crowded .

Not Just Animals, Ueno Zoo in Tokyo

You will be surprised that you not only can see animals in the Zoo, but also amazing traditional Japanese architecture, the Five-Story Pagoda Kyu Kaneiji. Kaneiji is a Tendai Buddhist Temple founded in 1625. According to Wikipedia, there was a Battle of Ueno and the destruction of Kan'ei-ji in 1898. There was a signboard explaining the history of this structure. The pagoda is located near the East Gate of Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, surrounded by beautiful trees. In autumn, the maple trees turn red, the area looks so stunning. Another main attraction is the Polar Bear exhibit, other than Giant Pandas. Ueno Zoo is about an eight-minute walk from JR Ueno Station. What to Eat in Ueno Zoo?

There are several restaurants and cafes in Ueno Zoo for lunch and quick bites. I love the ambiance of dining in the Zoo. We tried the Panda Soft Served Ice Cream, not only cute, but it also tasted really good. I also like the Creamy Spaghetti (look simple but very flavourful) and Fried Chicken (crispy outside and juicy inside). The Panda Pork Bun was soft and warm, a nice grab-to-go meal during cold weather. Desserts like Panda Mochi were chewy and not too sweet. There are quite a few vending machines in the zoo for drinks. Giant Panda at Ueno Zoological Garden

This is the oldest zoo in Japan, well known for Giant Pandas. We queue for 40 minutes to see those cute pandas. There were so many crowds even though it was a weekday. Everything was very well organized. Other than animals, you will be amazed by the beautiful trees and surroundings. It was so relaxing to stroll around or just sit on the bench. The admission fee is only 600 yen for adults, free for children below 12 years old. Ueno Zoological Garden is definitely worth visiting if you happen to be in Japan. Address: 9-83 Uenokoen, Taito City, Tokyo 110-8711 (only a few minutes walk from JR Ueno Station) Opening Hours: Ueno Zoo opens 9:30 to 17:00 (tickets sold until 16:00) and closes every Monday (closes Tuesday if Monday is a public holiday or Tokyo Citizen's Day). There are many rare animals such as the Shoebill, polar bears, fennec foxes, various birds, and monkeys, which are all very fascinating. There are plenty of seating areas and numerous vending machines, allowing visitors to relax and watch the animals up close. The surrounding merchandise is also very cute, including various plush toys, panda hats, and adorable socks, making for great souvenirs.

Pandas are BEARy good at being cute!

The big celebrities at Ueno Zoo are the giant pandas. The zoo has had pandas since the first pair were donated in 1972 as a gesture of friendship from China to Japan. The current pair of pandas are a male called Ri Ri, and a female called Shin Shin, which arrived at the zoo in 2011. Although giant pandas are well-known for being difficult to breed in captivity, Shin Shin gave birth to a female cub in 2017. Called Xiang Xiang, the cub is very popular with visitors to the zoo, but if you want to see her you should visit soon. Xiang Xiang is due to be returned to China at the end of December 2020. Giant pandas are the first to come to mind as the most popular animal in the zoo. They start eating breakfast around 9:30 am. From then on, they eat at intervals of every 2 hours. In addition to animals unique to Japan, the zoo's 'class president' giant panda is undoubtedly the star here. Besides the giant panda, there are also very precious animals from the central African and Zaire jungles, such as okapis. 🌟 The zoo houses about 3,000 animals, divided into eastern and western garden areas. The Eastern Garden focuses on elephants, hippos, and tigers, as well as native animals like the Japanese serow, Yezo deer, Hokkaido brown bear, and rare birds. Twin Pandas in Ueno zoo

#thingstodo Amazing zoo! We wandered here not actually planning to enter but decided to check it out. The tickets were ¥550 for adults and kids up to 12 could get in for free (wow)! There are two sections that divide this zoo and once you enter, you can tell that the main attraction are the pandas. There are many different animals from flamingos, to hawks, to giraffes, to tigers, to gorillas, to alligators and so on and so forth. I really love animals so I was completely needing out and taking countless pictures and videos. They really created a man made habitat for some of the birds as there is a huge pond that have some geese living there. It’s also worth mentioning that at the time I’m here, there are twin pandas. The line up to see them had literally hundreds of people waiting sleuth a wait time of 1 hour. This was during the week and not tourist season so I can’t imagine how long it typical takes to see them.

The Ueno Zoo is an affordable, must-see destination if you're visiting Tokyo. For someone like me that comes from a medium-sized (~100,000) town, this zoo felt quite large and well-varied. The grounds were immaculate and all of the animals seemed very well cared for, which is always wonderful to see. The two exhibits that ended up being my favorites were the penguins, which were very active and a blast to watch, alongside the gorillas, that are incredible to see in person. #2024wish
