If you already have or are thinking about buying tickets with a layover in Chengdu, this post is for you. Check out the life hacks and tips below. These tips also work for other cities in China. Which layover should I take? Optimal: 1.5-5 hours (stay at the airport) or 9 hours or more (to visit the city or relax after a long flight). In my opinion, 6-9 hours is the worst option: too much waiting time, but not enough time to get anywhere. Our layover on our last trip to Chengdu lasted 33 hours. You can find a ready-made 2-day plan on my profile. Hotels For a long layover, there are two accommodation options: a free hotel provided by the airline or booking a hotel yourself (at your own expense). Below I'll outline the pros and cons. • Free hotel. Many Chinese airlines offer free hotel accommodation during transit, typically for 8 to 24 hours. Check with your airline for details. Pros: Get a good night's sleep for free. Fast transfer to and from the airport + breakfast. Rooms are in good condition. Cons: Hotels are usually located near the airport, making it difficult to get to the city (+1 hour to the center). Transfer schedules are tight. • Paid hotel. Best option for long layovers. Pros: Possibility of staying in a hotel within the city, everything is close and accessible. Comfortable and convenient. Flexible check-in/out. Cons: Fee required. At least an hour's travel time from the city to the airport. Book in advance. Tip: If your flight isn't until the evening of the next day, don't overpay for a full night's hotel stay. After check-out, leave your bags at reception and go for a walk without any extra luggage. Check with the hotel in advance if this service is available. Money and Payment Alipay is the most convenient payment method in China. I recommend downloading Alipay/WeChat in advance and linking your card. Transportation Getting to the city center: • Metro (Line 18) - inexpensive, clean, and free of traffic. The station is located right inside the terminal on the -1 floor. 45-60 minutes to the city center. • Buses depart from the 1st floor of Terminals T1/T2; look for "Airport Bus." 60-90 minutes (depending on traffic). • Taxis via DiDi - convenient, but don't be fooled by the fake drivers at the exit! The actual waiting area is on the ground floor of the parking lot, under the "E-hailing / Ride-sharing" signs. Book a taxi through the app and wait for the driver. 60 minutes to the city center (depending on traffic). Wenshu Monastery, located in the northern part of downtown Chengdu, is a major attraction bustling with visitors. In autumn, the ginkgo trees at the entrance of the monastery are adorned with golden leaves. However, there are not many trees, so it doesn't form a large ginkgo forest. Inside the monastery, there are various halls and flower gardens, while outside, there is a shopping district that is also lively with tourists. Transportation: Take Chengdu Metro Line 1 to Wenshu Monastery Station, Exit K, and walk for 5-10 minutes. There are also longer-distance buses available to suburban or out-of-town attractions.

This is the second part of my post about a complete itinerary to Chengdu. If you haven't read the first part, I recommend checking it out. We traveled entirely by taxi, so we were able to visit all the locations on the list. If you're unsure of your pace, the first three locations will be sufficient. If you have time and energy left, you can visit all five. Day 2. Our flight was in the evening, so we had the whole day ahead of us. I recommend allowing at least an hour for the drive from the city to the airport. Itinerary: 1. Panda Sanctuary - Chengdu is considered the panda capital, and what would a visit to this place be without it? You'll have to get up early in the morning, but I recommend getting there before the pandas are fed, otherwise you'll only be left with sleeping butts. The sanctuary is quite large; we walked around it at a brisk pace in 2.5 hours. But I'd recommend allowing at least 3 hours. It's best to arrive at the reserve before 9:00 AM, before all the warriors have fallen asleep. We purchased tickets to the reserve in advance on trip.com. 2. Eastern Suburb Memory is an abandoned factory district that has been transformed into a cultural and creative area with various installations, shops, and establishments. It looks interesting and is a great place for a stroll and shopping. I personally popped into Adidas and Popmart – you won't leave without something to buy. To describe the whole place, it's a mixture of factory floors, giant chimneys, steel structures with graffiti, and youthful trends. 3. Wenshu Temple is not a tourist attraction, but a haven of peace in a bustling metropolis. It's an authentic place where you can sip tea in a bamboo garden. Here you can witness the temple service in person. Very captivating and authentic. Optionally, if time allows, you can add two more locations. These locations are located right next to each other. 1. IFS Chengdu Shopping Center - that huge LED screen with pandas and the panda climbing the building. In my opinion, these two locations can and should be left optional, as they weren't as impressive as they looked online. The area itself turned out to be more interesting. 2. Taikoo Li Chengdu - a popular, upscale open-air shopping district in a modern Chinese architectural style. It's located right across from the panda screen; you can't mistake it. The temple grounds are spacious and green with many shrines, towers, and ancient corridors. The drizzle knocked off the green tiles, whispered between the cracks in the stone, and the mood gradually became clear. Prajna (wisdom) is quietly hidden in the corner and in the daily scenery. The troubles of the world are like floating clouds; a drizzle gently brushes the tiles and washes away the noise. We also found that believers often perform two indispensable rituals when worshiping Buddha in Wenshu Temple. The first is to touch the word "Fu" on the door railing of the main hall, which means to welcome blessings into the home and heart, and pray for blessings, good fortune, peace and health; the second is to touch the auspicious and gentle, round and full bronze statue of the Qilin in front of the Dharma Hall, to pray for wealth and a smooth life. This ancient temple was first built in the third year of the Ming Dynasty, with a history of over 600 years, having experienced decay and reconstruction.
