Deep within the mist, lies the Taoist realm of Wudang.
Stepping into Wudang Mountain, a sense of spirituality immediately envelops you. The morning mist winds through the mountains, creating an ethereal atmosphere, accompanied by the gentle sound of pine trees whispering, as if nature itself is speaking. As you ascend the steps, each one feels like a step closer to the thousand-year-old Taoist sanctuary.
The South Cliff Palace is built on a cliff, with the Golden Summit shining brightly amidst the sea of clouds. Standing before the Golden Hall, the distant mountains appear like ink paintings, surrounded by verdant pines and cypresses, capturing the vastness of the universe. Inside the hall, incense smoke curls upwards as devotees kneel in sincere prayer, making the worldly chaos seem to settle here.
At dusk, the setting sun bathes the entire mountain in golden-red hues. Looking down into the deep valleys, distant pavilions and towers emerge faintly through the thin mist, resembling a fairyland. Wudang Mountain is not just a mountain, but a reverence for nature and a quest for inner peace. This journey feels like a dialogue with the soul, leaving a lasting impression.

The Celestial Realm of Harmony Between Heaven and Man: The Taoist Culture and Natural Beauty of Wudang Mountain
Wudang Mountain, located in Hubei Province, is renowned as the birthplace of Taoism in China. It is a sacred place that combines magnificent natural scenery with profound cultural heritage. During my visit to Wudang Mountain, I not only experienced the grandeur of nature but also deeply understood the wisdom and philosophy of Taoist culture.
The terrain of Wudang Mountain is steep. Climbing the winding stone steps feels like entering a celestial realm on earth. The mountain is shrouded in mist, with ancient pines standing tall, and the surroundings are tranquil, immersing one in harmony with nature. The Taoist buildings such as the Purple Cloud Palace and the Golden Hall, built halfway up the mountain, are both grand and ancient, showcasing the deep history of Wudang Mountain as a Taoist sanctuary. Autumn is the perfect time to explore Wudang Mountain, a colorful journey to the sacred land of Taoism.
Stretching over 800 kilometers, Wudang Mountain is the birthplace of Taoist culture and a sacred place for countless martial arts fans. The ancient trees reach for the sky and the mountain is shrouded in clouds and mist all year round, earning it the title of "the first fairy mountain in the world" since ancient times.
Wudang Mountain has different scenery in each of the four seasons, but autumn is the most pleasant. The autumn wind blows, and the top of the mountain changes into colorful clothes. The red leaves are like fire, the yellow leaves are like gold, and the green leaves are like jade. The forest is dyed in layers, like a poem and a painting. There are 33 palace and temple buildings on the mountain, including the Golden Summit, Zixiao Palace, and Nanyan.
The Golden Summit is the soul of Wudang Mountain. It enshrines the Emperor Zhenwu. The roof of the golden hall is a heavy eaves pavilion. The lights in the hall have been on for 600 years and are shining.
Zixiao Palace is magnificent and is one of the best-preserved ancient buildings in Wudang Mountain. Every year on March 3 and September 9, grand Taoist activities will be held.
Nanyan is a palace on a cliff and the largest existing stone hall in Wudang Mountain. The dragon head incense is breathtaking.
Travel strategy:
It is recommended to arrange two days to visit Wudang Mountain in depth. On the first day, start from the visitor center and visit Taizi Slope and Zixiao Palace to feel the profound Taoist culture. On the second day, get up early to climb to the Golden Summit, watch the sunrise and sea of clouds, and then go to Nanyan to experience the thrill and beauty on the cliff.
TIPS:
1. The climbing roads of Wudang Mountain are mostly step-shaped and have a large slope. Remember to wear a pair of comfortable shoes.
2. When visiting temples and Taoist temples, keep respect and do not make noise or disrespectful behavior.
3. Wudang Mountain at night is also unique. If you have enough time, you might as well stay on the mountain for one night and feel the tranquility and mystery of Taoist culture.

One-day tour of Wudang Mountain.
Wudang Mountain in Hubei Province is one of the sacred mountains of Taoism. In the autumn, the weather is cool and refreshing. Take the high-speed train to Wudang West Station and take a taxi to the guesthouse at the foot of the mountain. The next morning, at 7:30, climb the mountain. Rent a portable voice guide at the visitor center, which is very useful. It will automatically play explanations when you reach each attraction. Take the scenic bus to Zixiao Palace, the palace is indeed very impressive. Then go to Nanyan Palace, although it is still under repair, it is still worth seeing. Then hike to the Golden Hall, then to the Palace of the Heavenly Emperor. Although the three heavenly gates are tiring to climb, the scenery is incredibly beautiful. The Golden Hall is crowded with people, solemn and majestic, with smoke and mist swirling around, giving it a celestial air.

A Taoist holy site.
When visiting Wudang Mountain in Shiyan, Hubei, there is an eco-friendly vehicle at the visitor center that takes you to Qiongtai. From there, you can take a cable car to the Golden Summit. The steps are a bit steep. Taizipo is a transfer station. It is easiest to go to Zixiao Palace. Although the round trip to Nanyan Palace is far, it is relatively flat. If you have time, you can also go to Taichang Temple, Leishen Cave, etc. The Wudang Mountain ancient architectural complex brings together excellent ancient Chinese architectural styles, reflecting the grandeur of the palace, the magic and mystery of Taoism, the quiet elegance of the garden, the simplicity and frugality of the folk, etc., forming a rich and colorful traditional architectural style.

Wudangshan 武当山 is a mountain range in Hubei Province, located at a distance of over 1000 km from Beijing, which is located near the industrial city of Shiyan and about 120 km from Xiangfan City. The Wudangshan Mountains are a unique natural and cultural landmark of China and are famous for their grandiose architectural complex, the construction of which began in 1412 AD. There was also a Taoist university, which studied medicine, pharmacology, nutrition systems, meditation and martial arts. Many famous monks from different dynasties comprehended the Tao and gained the status of a "True man" in these mountains.
More than 500 years later, in 1994, the ancient architectural complex in the Wudangshan Mountains was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee report says that the architectural complex in the Wudangshan Mountains represents "an outstanding combination of typically Taoist architectural monuments with a unique natural landscape."
The Wudangshan Mountains are just such a place. They are located on the territory of modern Hubei Province in Central China and occupy an area of 312 square kilometers. Back in the 2nd century AD, in the Wudangshan Mountains, people allegedly saw a swirling "magic steam" (life-giving energy "qi"). The mountains became a haven for those who wanted to become a Taoist monk or who fled the worldly bustle.
The Taoist complex in the Wudangshan Mountains is an architectural embodiment of the idea of the unity of divine and imperial power. According to the legend of the transformation of mortal into an immortal celestial, all the buildings of the complex are divided into two parts: on the mountain slopes and peaks and at the foot of the mountains.
The extant structures of the Taoist architectural complex in the Wudangshan Mountains include four temple complexes "Taihegong" ("Golden Palace" and "Zijincheng"), "Nanyangong", "Zixiaogong", and "Yuzhengong" (Palace of Meeting with the Truth"); two monasteries "Fuzhenguan" (Return to the Truth) and "Yuanheguan" (Primordial Harmony), and a large number of secondary buildings, a total of over 200 buildings.

Mount Wudang
About Mount Wudang, there are few mountains like it, where 'every five miles there is a hermitage, every ten miles a palace; with verdant tiles and red walls, the view is exquisite and delicate', blending ancient architecture with nature so harmoniously.
Some are built on the peaks of high mountains, some hidden within sheer cliffs, and others nestled in the dense forests, forming a rare mountain forest architectural complex on the land of China.
The entire complex is strictly laid out according to the story of the True Warrior's cultivation to immortality, using royal architectural regulations, allowing the majestic mountain to soar into the world, achieving the artistic conception of 'a fairyland with jade palaces'.
From an aerial view, there is a profound and transcendent artistic effect, naturally formed, fully embodying the philosophy of 'the unity of heaven and man'.
No wonder Mount Wudang is hailed as 'a museum of ancient Chinese architectural achievements'.
The ancient architectural complex of Mount Wudang was first built during the Tang Dynasty's Zhenguan era (627-649 AD), with construction during the Song and Yuan dynasties. In the tenth year of the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Zhu Di, in order to strengthen imperial power, ordered the construction of palaces and temples on Mount Wudang, building a large number of Taoist palaces, temples, shrines, and monasteries centered around the Golden Summit, establishing the pattern of the architectural complex of Mount Wudang, and becoming the largest royal Taoist architectural complex of the Ming Dynasty, representing the highest level of Taoist architecture and art of the Ming Dynasty in China.
In May 1994, after inspecting Mount Wudang, UNESCO experts Mr. Kostler and Mr. Sumenta praised it as 'one of the most beautiful places in the world' and 'China's great history still resides in Mount Wudang'. On December 15, 1994, the architectural complex of Mount Wudang was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site. Perhaps, the natural scenery of Mount Wudang is not so outstanding on its own, but it excels in the profound integration of ancient Taoist culture and Taoist architectural complexes, making it impossible for visitors to separate nature from architecture while touring Mount Wudang, as if the two were inherently one, as if it was meant to be this way.
Mount Wudang is known as 'an unparalleled scenic spot through the ages, the number one fairy mountain in the world', and is famous for its status as 'the crown of the Five Sacred Mountains', where 'all four famous mountains bow down, and the five directional sacred peaks pay homage'.
Since the Tang Dynasty, emperors of successive dynasties have conferred titles on Mount Wudang. During the Tang Dynasty, it was one of the 'seventy-two blessed lands'; in the eighth year of Yuan Dade, it was titled 'Wudang Blessed Land'; in the fifteenth year of Ming Yongle, it was titled 'Great Yue', ranking above the Five Sacred Mountains; in the thirty-first year of Ming Jiajing, it was titled 'Xuan Yue of the Governing Era', and revered as the 'imperial family temple'.
Here, the purple aura lingers all year round, the clouds and mist are enchanting, the peaks are rugged and steep, the atmosphere is majestic, and everywhere reveals the mysterious and ethereal realm of the Wudang fairyland.
At the end of the Yuan and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, Zhang Sanfeng achieved great success and founded the world-famous Wudang Sect, known as 'Shaolin is revered in the north, Wudang is honored in the south', attracting countless domestic and foreign tourists to come and learn.
Where the thousand mountains converge, the land winds like a jade belt, and the story of Tai Chi begins here. Among the forests and vegetation, there are legendary stories filled with a combination of strength and softness, flowing like clouds and water, embracing all rivers.

Wudang Mountain in Shiyan, Nanyan Xuandi Temple
After enjoying the scenery along the way to Nanyan, I finally arrived here.
Some places below here are still under construction, and after I managed to come up, I sat on these steps to rest.
These steps lead into the Xuandi Temple. When I set foot in the Xuandi Temple, I could feel the aura around me was so solemn that one could not help but pay respectful attention.
Moving forward, I saw three plaques under the Xuandi Temple, which read 'Dao connects heaven and earth', 'Melodies create all things', and the third one I couldn't recognize. Anyway, these plaques are all read from right to left.
After visiting the Xuandi Temple, one needs to return the same way to the junction leading to the Golden Summit.
I also miss the time spent in the alleys of Nanyan, where there are wooden railings, lawns in the gardens, walls to look at, and a nearly bald tree.
On the way back, I saw golden trees again, a beautiful autumn scene. I don't remember how long I was lost in reverie here🙇, only that when I awoke, quite some time had passed.
Later, I encountered a shady tree, where I took shelter from the midday sun. What a beautiful and peaceful spot, what a celestial Wudang paradise!

The road to the summit of Wudang Mountain in Shiyan
After passing the Second Heavenly Gate, you will soon reach the Third Heavenly Gate.
During the rest at this spot, I encountered a man waiting for someone, looking down. Later on, a woman who had been sweeping the steps with a broom came up. It turned out they were a family.
After listening to their conversation, I understood. The man was urging the woman to hurry up, but she replied that she hadn't finished sweeping yet and would come soon.
It turns out that this woman was a sanitation worker for the scenic area, and after putting on the sanitation worker's uniform and picking up a broom, I realized why it seemed odd to see someone climbing a mountain with a broom.😓
They started climbing the mountain before me. After I finished checking in, they had already disappeared, so I took the opportunity to take some photos of my climb alone.🙇
After passing the Third Heavenly Gate, it's not far to the summit of Wudang Mountain.
The final path to the summit has more scenery than the previous mountain roads, with many buildings surrounding it.
After crossing these few small steps, the final path to the summit leads to the peak of Wudang. Thinking about it, I'm actually quite excited.😁
The chains here no longer hold red prayer plaques but these little heart-shaped objects. However, they probably serve the same purpose, likely used for making wishes and recording names or something.🙄

Playing by the stream at Wudang Mountain in Shiyan
Many walls like this one will be encountered on the way up Wudang Mountain. This kind of dark red wall also highlights the uniqueness of Wudang Mountain.
Along the way, I fully embraced the late autumn of Wudang Mountain. Stopping every now and then was simply because of the scenic beauty of Wudang Mountain that demanded to be captured. A trip here wouldn't be complete without taking hundreds of photos 😁
Watching other tourists either resting on chairs or buying supplies in the shops within the scenic area, I felt the warmth of human life even while climbing the mountain 🙇
Tired from climbing Wudang Mountain, I found a stream along the way and started playing in it.
The streams seen along the way on Wudang Mountain are quite rare, but there's never a shortage of visitors here, as most come with some Taoist beliefs. The mountain is full of countless Taoist priests.
I sat by this stream to rest for a while, put down my backpack, and took out some food to eat. After eating, I threw the trash in the bin above, starting environmental protection with myself.
Then I came back, washed my hands and face with the stream water, stretched lazily, and continued my climb 😁

Wudang Mountain's Renwei Temple
Wow, family! You must come and see Renwei Temple on Wudang Mountain! It's really amazing here! Although it's just the remaining ruins, you can still strongly feel the ancient people's astonishing ingenuity and the deep artistic conception is simply unbeatable! To enter this temple gate, you have to first pass through the woods by the river, then climb up the steps, and after entering the temple, turn right to see the screen wall. Then you have to cross the more than one zhang high Pufu Bridge, and the mountain stream beneath the bridge flows right through the temple. Only after climbing up the more than one zhang high Chongtai can you see the great hall! The progressive layers, the winding paths leading to secluded spots here are so wonderful, surrounded by mountains, with lots of green trees, and the stream is babbling, completely away from the hustle and bustle of the world. Here you can fully enjoy the tranquility, it's really a super treasure place for cultivating and seeking the Tao! Everyone, charge!
