Here comes the travel bug again! I've summarized this travel guide about Wuhai for everyone, please enjoy!
"Wuhai Lake" scenic area. Nestled against the mountains and surrounded by water, the city is encircled by the lake
Wuhai is truly a pearl of the Yellow River~
Address: Directly navigate to "Wuhai Lake No.1 Wharf Scenic Area"
Admission is 98 yuan, including round-trip boat tickets
Self-driving darlings can visit the internet-famous Desert Highway and Dead Trees on the way. You can choose between land and water routes. The water route involves taking a speedboat, then riding a camel, and finally walking for half an hour. It's quite time-consuming, but the experience is incredibly fulfilling.
Attractions:
La Seng Temple
A Tibetan Buddhist temple, known as the Little Potala Palace, it's quite far from the city center. If you're traveling from Yinchuan to Wuhai, you can choose to visit La Seng Temple before heading to Wuhai Lake. There's no admission fee for La Seng Temple.
tips
To enter Wuhai Lake scenic area, you must first go to Wharf No.1 to take a boat. The ticket price for admission + boat seems to be less than 100, and you should ask about the return time of the boat. Remember to check the time.
Behind the city is Gander Mountain, the highest point of which features a statue of Genghis Khan. The cable car costs about 100 yuan for a round trip, and you can see the city and the Yellow River from the cable car, which is incredibly beautiful
In the desert, you can take the desert train (59 yuan per person) and off-road vehicles within the park. I also recommend trying sand sliding, which is very fun! Board rental is 20 yuan each
You can take a boat from the wharf at 9 am to the beach and Dead Trees, and take a taxi to the highway in the evening. It's not too sunny and makes for great photos

The Foodie Road Trip
It's no exaggeration to say that Wuhai Lake is the West Lake beyond the Great Wall
After longing for a visit to Wuhai, a less-known destination, I found that there are not many travel guides online, and there are few tourists,
and it's less than 2 hours away from Yinchuan by train.
✔️ Wuhai is not big, and you can finish touring it in one day.
♥️ The first place to go is, of course, Wuhai Lake.
Believe it or not, Wuhai Lake is part of the Yellow River waters in the Ulan Buh Desert.
🈯️ Travel Tips
There are two ways to tour Wuhai Lake: by land and by water.
👉 We took the land route, which requires a taxi ride + walking to reach.
🔍 Here's the detailed guide -
❶ First, take a taxi to , and enter the desert through the fork in the road next to it.
❷ This desert road is partly buried by yellow sand, so ordinary cars can't pass through, and you can only walk in. (Please don't be stubborn if you're driving ❗️)
❸ After about an hour and a half of walking + taking photos, you'll see a white signal tower on the right side of the road and enter the sand dunes.
❹ After climbing over a few dunes, you'll reach the popular dead tree photo spot. (But it's really a bit tough)
💰 The whole journey is free, no admission fee required.
⚠️ For the return trip, you'll have to go back the same way, remember to contact the driver in advance to pick you up, or you can hitch a ride with the locals.
🚢 The water route is much simpler, just take a speedboat from Wuhai Lake No.1 Pier, which is also close to the downtown area, but it lacks a lot of the fun along the way, and you can't take road photos.
📸️ Other tips
❶ I regret not wearing the right clothes, this place is suitable for black or bright-colored dresses.
❷ When walking in the desert, be sure to wear the right shoes, my canvas shoes got sand in them several times 😭
❸ Drone aerial photography can capture the full panorama, which is really stunning! But some areas have no signal, so return quickly.
❹ Lenses with a focal length of 70mm or more are so good! The undulating road, the high-rise buildings of the distant city, and the compressed sense of space feel a bit like a mirage. But the sand is very fine, so be careful when changing lenses.

✈️Transportation
There are flights and trains to Wuhai from Chengdu. Since I went during the May Day holiday, the plane tickets were a bit expensive, so you can also choose to take a high-speed train to Yinchuan and then rent a car to drive for about 1.5 hours or take a hard seat for about 2 hours to get there
-
Day1️⃣ Wuhai Lake
Day2️⃣ Wuhai Lake - Manbalage Temple - (I didn't go to Gander Mountain)
Day3️⃣ Early return to Yinchuan
-
⚠️Key Points
1️⃣ Wuhai City was only established in 1976 by merging Wuda City and Haibowan City, so the whole city is relatively young and there are not many tourist attractions within the city. The main scenic spots should be three: ☑️Wuhai Lake, ☑️Gander Mountain Scenic Area, ☑️Jinsha Bay
2️⃣ The Wuhai Lake scenic area is quite large, so if you like taking photos, please go in the morning. We didn't know and arrived at 4 pm on the first day, only to find out the park closed at 6 pm, so we went again early the next morning
3️⃣ The scenery of Wuhai Lake and Jinsha Bay is quite similar, so it is suggested to choose one of the two
4️⃣ Public transportation between scenic spots is not convenient, so it is recommended to rent a car for a self-driving tour
-
🌊Wuhai Lake
Half 'sea water' and half desert, there is also a viral abandoned highway that visually creates an impact like a 'mirage'. The scenic area offers many desert entertainment facilities
.
To enter the core area of the scenic spot, the fastest way is to take a boat from Pier No. 1 back and forth, 98 (big boat/sailboat more stable suitable for the elderly and children, 30min), 128 (speedboat more exciting and will splash water on you suitable for young people, 15min)
.
🟥Manbalage Temple
Wuhai's 'Little Potala Palace', built on a cliff, is magnificent and great for photography. Cars can only park at the parking lot below, and you need to climb a bit of a mountain to reach it, with no shade along the way
.
🟤Gander Mountain Scenic Area
The highest point of the city with a view, there is a huge Genghis Khan statue on the mountain. You can take a cable car up the mountain, and there is a museum on the mountain that requires a ticket to enter
.
🏜️Jinsha Bay Ecotourism Area
The scenery is similar to Wuhai Lake, and there are also many desert entertainment facilities to experience
-
About Hotels
🏨Recommended to stay at Wuhai Wanda Jinhua Hotel, a new hotel with a good overall experience. The surrounding environment is quiet but also convenient and parking is very easy, with great service attitude
-
🥟Food Recommendations
After spending several days in Inner Mongolia, I found that the food here is generally quite salty
.
☑️Jindeyuan Slightly Wheat City
A local favorite, the noodles are very chewy and the fillings are generous. Definitely pair it with the sweet radish soup (it's the first time I saw radish soup with shredded radish) - so delicious
.
☑️Ali's Barbecue
On the same street as the slightly wheat city, the chicken feet and wings are really tasty. The portions are also sufficient and the key is the high cost-performance ratio
.
☑️Four Seasons Fortune Northwestern Cuisine
Also a restaurant that locals really like, with a relatively better environment. The fried small yellow fish is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, very nice, and the iron plate fried tofu and the cold mixed sand onion are also delicious

Wuhai|Half desert, half sea
Driving from Yinchuan to Wuhai Lake takes two hours. Set your navigation to 'Wuhai Lake Pier No.1'. Surprisingly, the toll fee is only 36 yuan, which shocked me as someone from Guangxi.
The price list for activities at Wuhai Lake is shown in picture nine. We bought round-trip speedboat tickets for 98 yuan per person. Only by speedboat can you reach the desert, and the ride lasts about fifteen minutes. We arrived at four in the afternoon, and the last speedboat back was at five-thirty. We were in a rush and only had time to check in at the dead tree spot, without time to visit the Desert Highway spot, so try to go earlier if you can. Camel riding costs 60 yuan per person, but after walking just 200 meters, we had to turn back, which felt like a loss.

Wuhai Summer Tourism | Water Activities in the Desert and Boat Trips to the Famous Dead Trees
Wuhai's most Instagrammable spot is probably the desert's dead tree set left behind after the filming of the movie 🎬 'Wuhai'. Many people come to Wuhai for a brief day trip or two-day visit, choosing to rent a car 🚗 or drive themselves, crossing the desert and then reaching the destination on foot 🚶♀️. However, this method might not be very family-friendly for those traveling with children 🧑🧑🧒. If you want to 📸 take photos of the dead trees, it's actually recommended to go by boat.
📍Boat boarding location: Wuhai Lake No.1 Pier
🎫Fare: (Round trip) Speedboat 128/person, Sailboat or Yacht 98/person; children under 1.2 meters 🆓 free
👉Sailboats and yachts are a bit slower than speedboats 🚤, taking about half an hour to reach the opposite shore of the desert, but they are more stable. You can also 📸 take pictures of the scenery along the shore from the boat.
After disembarking in the desert, if you walk further in, you will find several lakes in the desert where there are many water entertainment activities available, such as jet skis, water bikes 🚲, surf cars, off-road beach vehicles 🚙, camel riding, kayaking 🚣♂️, etc. See the attached price list for details. You can purchase different combinations of 🎟️ boat tickets + package tickets as needed before boarding, or buy tickets for entertainment activities separately after landing. For family fun, if you don't like thrilling activities, it's recommended to try kayaking, camel riding 🐫, and sand sliding.
At the lakeside near the camel riding area, if you bring your own sand shovels, children 👦 can play with water and sand; nearby sand dunes, with a certain height and slope, are perfect for sand sliding. Sandboards can be brought by yourself or rented, with rental available only at the disembarkation point. The sand dune for sliding offers a great view, overlooking the famous dead trees and even the Genghis Khan statue on Gander Mountain ⛰️ from various angles, making it a great spot for photography.
⭕️Other
🔸If you choose to come by boat and plan to stay late, remember to ask in advance about the last boat's ⛴️ return time.
🔸When playing in the desert, be sure to pay attention to sun protection 🧢 and hydration 💦. The sun ☀️ can be quite harsh when it's clear, so try to avoid midday.
🔸There is a rich variety of water activities to enjoy here; as for the 📷 Instagrammable dead trees, I personally think there's no need to be too fixated on them.

Wuhai Tourism | Early Summer Bird Watching May Day at Wuhai Lake to encounter the Red-billed Gulls
Wuhai, you really know how to enjoy yourself. Every year from March to May, large flocks of Red-billed Gulls🐦 follow a fixed route, migrating from the south where they winter to the north for breeding. During this migration, they pass through Wuhai where they rest and adjust, which has become a major spring spectacle of Wuhai🏙️.
During the May Day travel season, although many Red-billed Gulls have already flown away, you can still see many birds🐦 flying around the shores of Wuhai Lake, where you can watch them from a close distance.
📍Red-billed Gull Viewing Spot: Lakeside of Wuhai Lake No.1 Pier
❗️Reminder: There are some vendors by the lake selling bread🍞 to feed the Red-billed Gulls, but there are also official broadcasts📣 and notices🪧 reminding that 'there is no bread in nature', suggesting that for the sake of ecology and the health of the birds themselves, it is recommended not to feed them these artificially made foods.
During holidays when there are slightly more people, and when there are more cruise boats🛥️ operating at Wuhai Lake No.1 Pier, the activities of the Red-billed Gulls may be a little further from the shore, and they will occasionally fly in groups🪽 to the nearshore area, so you might want to wait a bit.
In addition to watching Red-billed Gulls at Wuhai Lake No.1 Pier, there is also a lakeside walkway suitable for 🚶♀️ strolling, and you can also take a boat🛥️ to tour around the lake, or sail to the opposite desert🏜️ for fun, check in at Wuhai's most popular dead tree scene, and in the evening, it is also a great place to watch the desert sunset🌅.

MARY OSBORNE
In Wuhai, one can venture to a desert with a sea to find a solitary tree
Not far from Yinchuan, there is a desert where you can see the 'sea'. This is Wuhai City in Inner Mongolia, a small city with Mongolian characteristics. Not far from the train station, you can reach the Desert Sea - Wuhai Lake.
✨ Travel Tips: It is recommended to navigate to Wuhai Lake Pier No.1, take a speedboat to the desert park, and after entering the desert park, head to the left to check in at various attractions such as the desert sea, sand motorcycles, popular withered trees, and trekking. The water of Wuhai Lake is a direct flow introduced from the Yellow River, appearing emerald from above and blue like the ocean up close. Walking in the desert, about two kilometers of trekking through the sand will take you to a no man's land, where if you encounter blue skies and white clouds, it's perfect for photography. The overall number of tourists is not high, making for a great experience! It's a good choice for a weekend getaway or a relaxing holiday.
🚌 Travel Tips: There are two trains departing from Yinchuan to Wuhai every morning, with tickets costing just over 20 yuan. Traveling through the northwestern wilderness, the journey is accompanied by beautiful scenery and good spirits. It takes only two hours to reach Wuhai.
✅ Must Experience: Wuhai is suitable for a one or two-day visit, with very authentic Mongolian meals. You can taste the local yogurt and mutton here. Without going far, you can experience the authentic Inner Mongolian culture.

Do you believe there is a sea in the desert? (Wuhai Travel Guide Winter Edition)
When it comes to Wuhai, I guess many people don't know
Wuhai is located in the northwest of our motherland, a municipality directly under the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
It is an industrial city with half sea water and half desert
-
Here you can see the magnificent scenery of the desert and the long river sunset
Here you can feel the heroic and martial spirit of Genghis Khan
Here you can learn about the Tibetan and Mongolian medical culture of Wuhai
-
Tourist route:
First stop: Manbalasang Temple
A Tibetan temple, no ticket is required, built against the mountain, known as the Little Potala Palace. Because there are many heavy industrial factories nearby, taking pictures will really be shocking, on one side is the solemn Tibetan temple, on the other side is the factory with thick smoke, the sense of separation is really strong!
This is also a Mongolian medical training center, in addition to taking pictures, you can also experience a different culture.
Second stop: Gandershan in Wuhai
There is a museum on it, the ticket is 60, the cable car up and down is 100
There is a super large statue of Genghis Khan on the top of the mountain, which is a landmark building of Wuhai
You can see it almost everywhere in the city
Third stop: Wuhai Lake
The frozen Wuhai Lake in winter seems a lot quieter, but it's also fun to slide on the ice (be sure to pay attention to safety)
📍Location navigation: Jinsha Development Co., Ltd. Mongolian Camp (there is a small road opposite that can directly lead to Wuhai Lake)
But! When we went, this road was blocked, we drove forward for a while, there was a fork in the road to turn right in, you can also get there, just have to walk a bit more.
There are many camels 🐫 on this road, basically all are domesticated, just let go outside, you can take a close-up photo with the camel, as long as you don't provoke the camel, they are generally gentle.
The sunset of Wuhai Lake is really beautiful, and there are not many people in the entire desert, in winter you can directly contract the entire Wuhai Lake!
-
You can also experience boating in the desert sea when you come to Wuhai in summer!

Wuhai, the ceiling of the desert
Wuhai|The ceiling of the desert in winter is actually free!
There are deserts and lakes nearby, and cities and mountains in the distance. As a PTSD player in the photo deception scenic spot, Wuhai is really worth a visit!
Drive or take a taxi to the 'Golden Sand Development Center Mongolian Camp', there is a road next to the pyramid-like post station opposite the Mongolian Camp where you can go in and park.
Desert highway, with the desert on the side and the city in the back, a very popular dead tree check-in point for photos, follow the highway for 4km, see a warning sign and walk into the desert for 1km, Sand Lake, walk from the dead tree check-in point to the dock, you can see Sand Lake,
Wander around in the desert to find angles for photos. After coming out, there is a real dead tree, which is quite photogenic, and you can also take pictures of the distant city.
Climb to the post station at sunset to watch the pink light of the sunset spill on the mountain, and the distant Genghis Khan statue also becomes gentle, very dreamy.

Silk Road Fourth Stop|Wuhai Travel Notes
🌆Wuhai, at first hearing the name, it is easy to be mistaken for a coastal city, but it is actually located in the western part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, formed by the merger of Wuda City and Haibowan City in 1976.
🏹According to historical research, this place was once the frontline of the war between the Central Plains dynasty and the northern nomadic tribes, and it was also an important place for trade and cultural exchanges between the two sides during peaceful times.
🏯The Manbalasang Temple in Hainan District has a history of more than 200 years. The main body is built on a cliff, steep peaks, huge buildings, golden roofs, showing a majestic momentum, and it seems to bring people to the Potala Palace.
🏜️'Watching the sea in the desert' is a major feature here. The west side of Wuhai is only separated by a river from the Ulan Buh Desert. What is surprising is that the 118 square kilometers of Wuhai Lake and the desert have become one, forming a spectacular scene of sand and water interweaving.
⛰️Looking east, the distant Gandor Mountain is not only the city's highest peak, but also becomes a landmark building of Wuhai because of the Genghis Khan statue.
🏞️The arch of the mountain and the nourishment of the water have made this land rich and the people comfortable.
🌄At dusk, many tourists will come to the lake in groups, encounter the romance unique to Wuhai: desert style, lake and mountain scenery, breeze blowing, reeds blooming, enjoy the relaxation of travel in the mountains and rivers, and make people linger.

Journey to the desert oasis of Wuhai
1. Take a taxi to the Mongolian camp of Jinsha Development Co., Ltd., and enter from the road at the security booth on the left of the pyramid after getting off.
2. After entering, you can see the P1 speed limit 40 sign, then go straight along the road, we walk and take pictures for about 1h to reach the turning point.
3. After seeing the white signal pole, turn right over the sand dune to see the dead tree spot.
4. Next, keep flipping over the sand dunes to reach the check-in spot, I personally think it's quite safe, but it's recommended to have at least two people accompany into the desert.
5. After finishing taking pictures and playing at the check-in spot, go out in the direction of the dinosaur (our entrance and exit directions are different) to the road, and then continue along the road, our taxi location for exiting can be set as Hongliu Jiayuan.
6. The whole journey on foot + check-in photo play + exit takes 4h.
PS: Bring enough water, sun protection glasses, hats, masks, power banks, the sand is very big, and you can pour out a lot of souvenirs from your backpack and shoes when you go back.
