The fortifications of the ancient city are some of the largest, oldest and best preserved in all of China. Dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties the wall encased an area of around 14 square kilometres - so get ready for some serious exercise! We hired bicycles on the top of the wall and spent the evening exploring the various structures atop it as well as the glittering views of the city. Once coming down, make sure to take the quick walk to the Drum tower (third photo) for another beautiful view.

There are many watchtowers, tunnels, battlements and gates to see! You can spend an entire day on the city wall and not see everything! A City with a lot of Stone

Xi’an has a fair share of scenic spots to visit when you go but none more recommended than the City Wall. I stayed in the Ibis Hotel at Drum Tower so it was around 15 minutes to walk down to the city wall entrance. Most people opt to use a bike while on the wall as it’s a fascinating ride around the whole city. Tickets are purchased before you enter, and while it tells you to purchase beforehand, you can just use WeChat to buy as you get there. I was recommended to visit at dusk as you can see the wall and the view as the sunsets and I would equally recommend this time too. The wall isn’t as busy at this time as it’s typically dinner time for many Chinese and the suns heat is still there should you be visiting in the Summer like me. Xi'an City Wall is also known as Fortification of Xi'an. It is a massive compound scaling around 13.7 kilometre and stands 12 metre high in the middle of the Xi'an City. Regarded as one of the largest ancient military defensive system in the world, it was built during the Ming Dynasty (1370). It has four main gates; East Gate (Changle Gate), West Gate (Anding Gate), South Gate (Yongning Gate), North Gate (Anyuan Gate). We went through the Yongning Gate as it is the most decorated one. Visitors are able to walk along the wall and enjoy its inner and outer walls, watchtowers, moat, and landscape from an elevated view. While we opted for cycling around the wall because the place was huge and we were all tired by the walking. we stayed until night to witness the lights on lanterns. we loved the place so much #xian #xiancitywall #china

📍Xi’an Xi’an city wall, also known as the fortifications of Xi’an, is the most complete city wall that has survived in China, also one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world. My tour guide, mr. Li, told me that Xi’an City Wall was 13,6 km. It had 4 gates, Changle Gate, Anding Gate, Yongning Gate, and Anyuan Gate. I was walking around, taking pictures and just sight-seeing. I didn’t want to ride the bike because it was too cold. I came from the south gate or Yongning Gate. Because not all the gates are opened for tourists.

Changle Gate, the official eastern gate of the Xi'an City Wall, is located slightly south of the middle of the eastern wall. It was built during the expansion of Xi'an Prefecture City from the seventh to the eleventh year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1374 to 1378) The gate was subsequently inherited through the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. Today, Changle Gate retains its barbican, arrow tower, main tower, and double gateways. Additionally, three archways were opened on each side of the city gate to allow the passage of vehicles and pedestrians. In the sixteenth year of the Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty (1643), when Li Zicheng's army attacked Xi'an, the main tower of Changle Gate was burned down. It is said that when Li Zicheng saw the 'Changle Gate' plaque hanging on the city gate, he said to his soldiers: 'If the emperor enjoys perpetual happiness, the people will have to suffer endlessly!' Upon hearing this, the soldiers were incensed and set fire to the tower. It was rebuilt during the Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. Before the modern Xi'an Incident, Zhang Xueliang organized the Teaching Corps and the Student Soldiers Corps on the main tower of Changle Gate. Due to military defense needs, the tower underwent significant modifications. In 1994, the main tower of Changle Gate began a repair project, as the structure had severely tilted, the roof had collapsed, and there was extensive leakage. After the repairs, the main tower of Changle Gate was restored to its former Ming and Qing Dynasty state and serves as a memorial site for the Xi'an Incident on the Xi'an City Wall

I definitely recommend mounting the Xi’an city wall. At a price of 54 yuan for an adult and only 27 yuan for the student ticket, it is well worth it. We got up at the south gate (Yongning gate) and walked the entire wall in the anti clockwise direction. It is a total of 14km and it was so worth it as the views are great! It is also possible to rent bikes if in a rush. There are lots of toilets and small shops offering refreshments, particularly around the north and south gate.

The main city wall of Xi'an has four gates: the South Gate, known as Yongning Gate, symbolizing eternal peace; the North Gate, known as Anyuan Gate, signifying peace in the distant Western Regions; the West Gate, known as Anding Gate, and the East Gate, known as Changle Gate, both representing harmony. These four gates are the original gates of the ancient city wall.
