Tips:
1. Make an appointment for explanation at the ticket office. There are not many interpreters and you may need to wait. When I went there, I was told that I would have to wait for about an hour and a half. If you have time, it is recommended to make an appointment and wait. You can visit it by yourself first, and then visit it again when the explanation comes. The experience will definitely be better! I gave up waiting because of time constraints, and I regretted it a bit.
2. Be sure to do some homework in advance, and then feel the shock brought to you by the physical objects on the spot. The experience will definitely be much better. I didn't do my homework, and I didn't ask for an explanation because of the long waiting time. I just looked at it and felt a little lost after playing, but after I went home, I made up some homework carefully, combined with the feeling on the spot, and I was still aftertaste.
3. After watching Yongle Palace, you can go to "Cooked Meat Shop", next to Ruicheng Hotel

Shanxi Ancient Architecture Tour: Ruicheng National Protected Shousheng Temple Pagoda
🏯Shanxi's ancient buildings are blooming everywhere. In Yuncheng alone, there are 102 national-level cultural relic protection units. In Ruicheng, the pearl of the Yellow River bordering Tongguan County in Shaanxi Province, you can see this towering ancient pagoda from the Song Dynasty - Shousheng Temple Pagoda, just by wandering around the city.
✔️Shousheng Temple, where the Shousheng Temple Pagoda is located, is one of the earliest Buddhist holy sites in China. The brick pagoda of Shousheng Temple was built by King Ashoka and was destroyed during wars. Currently, except for the brick pagoda, all buildings in the temple are modern imitations of ancient styles. The rebuilt Shousheng Temple is not large, just the most basic temple layout, including the mountain gate, main hall, and east and west side halls. The temple is surrounded by wide streets and urban areas.
1️⃣The ancient pagoda is in the backyard of Shousheng Temple, standing on the most prominent central axis. It was built in the eighth year of Xining in the Northern Song Dynasty, more than a thousand years ago.
2️⃣The ancient pagoda is a brick pagoda in the style of a wooden structure pavilion, with an octagonal plan and a total of thirteen levels. The pagoda body is tall and elegant, with the first level being the highest. From bottom to top, it gradually narrows, and the top of the pagoda is an iron-covered dome, forming a conical outline. Buddha niches are set on all four sides of the second to tenth levels. Bells are hung on the eaves corners of the pagoda body, which jingle when the breeze blows.
3️⃣According to the introduction, there is a small door under the brick pagoda that can be entered, with a wooden ladder leading to the top of the pagoda. However, to protect the cultural relics, the wooden ladder is locked and not open to visitors. The murals on the inner walls of the pagoda from the Song Dynasty cannot be seen in person.
4️⃣Walking out of the temple, you can see the red walls and the pagoda temple reflecting each other. In the distance is the modern human atmosphere, and nearby is the towering ancient pagoda containing a thousand years of history. The ancient pagoda has witnessed the passage of history and the inheritance of culture.
🎫Tickets: Free admission.
📍Address: At the intersection of Sheli East Street and Sheli Street, Guwei Town, Ruicheng County, Yuncheng City. Convenient for self-driving parking, there is a small parking lot outside the temple, free of charge. The county is not large, and you can also take a taxi to get there.
🍱Nearby food: Less than a kilometer away, next to Ruicheng Grand Hotel, there is a 'Cooked Meat Shop,' which is also a local delicacy we found according to the guide. The small shop is very popular. Braised meat is a traditional snack in Ruicheng, especially when the braised meat is added to the golden-baked triangular cake. One bite, crispy and crumbly, so delicious that you can't stop eating. And for more than 20 yuan, you can get three cakes and a medium portion of braised meat.
↪️Recommended one-day tour route in Ruicheng: Guangrenwang Temple → Yongle Palace Scenic Area → Chenghuang Temple Scenic Area → Shousheng Temple Scenic Area → Xihoudu Scenic Area.

Shanxi Ancient Architecture • Yongle Palace • Travel with Black Monkey
⛱️Must-visit spot: Yongle Palace
🌄Travel Tips: Both high-speed rail and self-driving are very convenient in Shanxi. The combo ticket is 125, and Yongle Palace alone is 60.
🏨Accommodation Tips: Hampton by Hilton Yuncheng Salt Lake
💗Other tips: Parking at Yongle Palace Scenic Area is very convenient, you can see it right at the entrance. Park on the right side of the main square at the entrance of the entire scenic area.
The scenic area square has small wild entertainment projects for children, as well as snacks. There is a unique Taoist culture coffee shop and painting.
The entire scenic area is considered large in ancient architecture (compared to Lantian Water and Land Temple) and is mainly famous for its murals. Guided tours are in high demand, so it is recommended to book one online, otherwise, it might be hard to understand.
You need to wear shoe covers in each main hall, which is a bit like when we used to take computer classes as kids. There is no lighting inside the main halls. The Chaoyuan map mainly features Taoist figures, such as the gods of the stars and constellations, generals, and the Yuan Sage. It is much larger than expected, with well-preserved areas. Flash photography is not allowed, so I skipped taking photos to help protect the ancient architecture.
Interestingly, there is a tomb of Lü Zu here, and the Emperor Fuyou bows to show respect. In terms of popularity among religious figures, Guanyin Bodhisattva is for Buddhism, and Lü Dongbin, Lü Zu, is for Taoism.
Moreover, one of the main halls has two pieces written by Lü Zu on cultivation methods, the Hundred Character Stele. I have known about them for a long time and benefited from them. One is for cultivating nature (spiritual direction), and even if your classical Chinese is not good, you can basically understand the general content. The other is for cultivating life (physical direction), which is much harder to understand. However, you can always ask Baidu or consult a professional Taoist priest; do not practice blindly.
The cultural and creative store sells rubbings of these two pieces by Lü Zu. Just buy them without thinking—each comes with twenty sentences, a true ladder to heaven! The secret to immortality doesn't cost 998, just buy it. There are two colors, black or red, which can be framed and given as gifts.
Hotel Recommendation: Hampton by Hilton Yuncheng Salt Lake. Yuncheng can be the first stop in Shanxi, followed by Hongtong County Guangsheng Temple • Xixian Xiaoxitian • Taiyuan Jinci • Datong Yungang, and many more. Stay tuned for updates. Welcome to follow.

Went to Yongle Palace, sharing my true feelings, every word from the heart
Yongle Palace is a Taoist temple built in honor of Lü Dongbin, one of the 'Eight Immortals'.
The overall layout of Yongle Palace is spacious, with grand and broad individual buildings. The interlacing and overlapping of dougong (bracket sets) and the simple and clear carvings form the typical architectural features of the Yuan Dynasty.
The main attractions include murals, the Hall of Three Purities, and the Hall of Pure Yang.
The murals of Yongle Palace are treasures of ancient Chinese painting art.
The Hall of Three Purities, also known as the Hall of Infinity, is the main hall of Yongle Palace.
The Hall of Pure Yang, also known as the Hall of Harmony, is dedicated to Lü Dongbin, the patriarch of the Quanzhen School.
Route:
Starting from Yuncheng, drive along S239-Yunbao Expressway Ruicheng Connection Line-Yongle North Road to reach Yongle Palace.
Precautions:
Yongle Palace is a national key cultural relic protection unit. When visiting, pay attention to protecting the cultural relics and the environment. Do not touch the murals and relics.
Photography is prohibited inside Yongle Palace. Do not take photos inside the palace.

The Grand Mural of Yongle Palace
The renowned Yongle Palace is located in Ruicheng County, Yuncheng. In the 1950s, it underwent a globally notable relocation. Originally one of the three major ancestral courts of the Quanzhen School, Yongle Palace is the most complete existing Taoist architectural complex from the Yuan Dynasty. From south to north, the palace is arranged with the Palace Gate, Wuji Gate, Sanqing Hall, Chunyang Hall, and Chongyang Hall. The construction follows the Song Dynasty's "Yingzao Fashi" and the "Jianzhu Method" from the Liao and Jin periods. The space is grand and imposing, with murals covering the four main halls. The ceilings of the halls are adorned with magnificent caissons, but photography is not allowed. The most clearly preserved and famous mural is the Yuan Dynasty's "Chaoyuan Tu" in the Sanqing Hall. This grand piece, praised as "Immortals Paying Homage, with the Wind Moving Across the Wall," has been seen in 3D reproductions at the Shanxi Museum, Yuncheng Museum, and Guangdong Provincial Museum. However, when visiting the site in person, facing the majestic hall and the grand mural spanning over 400 square meters, even those unfamiliar with art cannot help but be moved. The sense of awe is incomparable to that experienced in a museum.

On the B-side of Yongle Palace in Shanxi, remember to look up
The A-side of Yongle Palace is famous for its murals
But photography is not allowed...
So how could such a vast Yongle Palace only have murals? Mr. Liang Sicheng once said: 'The roofs of ancient Chinese buildings have never been superfluous.' Look up, it's fascinating, snap away, and you'll discover the B-side of Yongle Palace
🐲Chimera
✅On top of the Hall of the Three Purities: With a dragon head and fish tail, peacock blue glazed tiles, there's even a little man in the dragon's mouth, the Rain Master to the east, and the Thunder God P1 in the middle
✅On top of the Hall of Pure Yang: Huge in size with a wide mouth and sharp teeth, a dragon tail at each end of the chimera, the eastern side features a coiled dragon in the world, the western side a soaring dragon breaking through the sky P1 below
✅On top of the Hall of Double Yang: Similar in design to the Hall of Pure Yang, slightly inferior in detail, after all, the three main halls can't be outdone by the two main halls P1 above
🏯Four Short Men
Also known as men with no way out, they usually stand at the front end of the four eaves, in the image of warriors. One version identifies them as: Han Xin, Zhou Yu, Luo Cheng, and Pang Juan, while another version has: Zi Du, Pang Juan, Han Xin, Luo Cheng, standing at the four corners of the Hall of Double Yang in Yongle Palace, all four were talented but had short-lived fates as heroes
🪦The Stele of the Great Morning Reconstruction of the Great Pure Yang Longevity Palace
The C-position among all the steles in Yongle Palace, an original from the Yuan dynasty, now fenced off, the stele is very tall, remember to look up
⛩️Architecture
Four grand halls, among which the Dragon and Tiger Hall and the Hall of the Three Purities have hip-and-gable roofs, while the Hall of Pure Yang and the Hall of Double Yang have resting hill roofs, with a clear distinction in rank
Yongle Palace
Please stop obsessing over the legitimacy of taking photos of the murals
Look up more, isn't the B-side tempting⁉️

Not in Dunhuang! But the murals here are in no way inferior to those in Dunhuang
Yongle Palace tour, the murals are as stunning as the first sight 🎨
I had long heard that the murals of Yongle Palace are as famous as those in Dunhuang, but it seems that the glory of Dunhuang always overshadows it. 😅 However, when I truly stepped into this sacred place, the beauty of the murals was even more amazing than I had imagined! 😍
The wheels of history roll forward, and many ancient buildings have faded with time. 🌀 But Yongle Palace, this ancient building that once faced the risk of being submerged by the Sanmenxia Reservoir, has been preserved intact like a real-life version of 'The Foolish Old Man Removes the Mountains'. 🏛️ The Yongle Palace we see today, every inch of mural and every brick, is a miracle in the history of cultural relics relocation. 💎

I've arrived at the ancient capital known for its 'terrestrial cultural relics in Shanxi' that spans a thousand years!
'To see underground cultural relics, go to Shaanxi; to see aboveground cultural relics, go to Shanxi.'
Shanxi is a province in China with a long history and profound cultural heritage, known as China's 'ancient capital of a thousand years.' This time, I came to Shanxi to visit ancient buildings. Every historic site I visited was awe-inspiring.
I can't help but marvel at the wisdom and ultimate aesthetic of the ancients.
Walking tens of thousands of steps in Shanxi each day, I collected these ancient buildings that have been frozen in time on this ancient land. If you come to Shanxi, you might have a clearer understanding of why 'to see terrestrial cultural relics, go to Shanxi.'

Before going to Yongle Palace
I heard that the murals of Yongle Palace are no less impressive than those of Dunhuang
But the fame of Dunhuang's murals far exceeds that of Yongle Palace until I saw it with my own eyes
I found it to be even more stunning than I imagined
As time flies
The once glorious ancient buildings in history have mostly gradually declined in the submerged area of the Sanmenxia Reservoir
It has achieved a real-life version of 'The Foolish Old Man Moves Mountains'
In the eyes of most people who did not have a good opinion of it
It is just like the Yongle Palace we see now
Every inch of mural, every brick
Is a miracle in the history of world cultural relic relocation
It is the largest in scale among the existing Yuan Dynasty buildings, and it is also the best preserved, with huge murals inside the hall, considered to be the most significant mural discovery after Dunhuang

China, Shanxi Ruicheng {1}
Yongle Palace, originally named Dachunyang Wanshou Palace, was built to commemorate Lv Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals. It is commonly known as Yongle Palace due to its location in Yongle Town. It is a national key cultural relic protection unit and is situated 3 kilometers north of Ruicheng County, on the east side of Longquan Village. Yongle Palace was established between 1247 and 1358 AD and is the largest and most well-preserved Taoist temple in China. Along with Beijing's Baiyun Temple and Shaanxi Hu County's Chongyang Palace, it is known as one of the three ancestral courts of Quanzhen Taoism. The original site of Yongle Palace was 20 kilometers southwest of Ruicheng County in Yongle Town. In the late 1950s, due to the construction of the Sanmenxia Reservoir, Yongle Palace was located in the area to be submerged. Following Premier Zhou's instructions, the Ministry of Water Resources allocated more than 2.2 million yuan, and from 1957 to 1966, Yongle Palace was relocated in its original form to the site of the ancient Wei capital from the Western Zhou Dynasty, 2 kilometers north of the county town for preservation.

Yongle Palace - The Pinnacle of Yuan Dynasty Murals
Yongle Palace was originally the residence of Lü Dongbin. After Lü's death, it was converted into a shrine for Lü, and by the end of the Jin Dynasty, it became a Taoist temple. In the third year of Yuan Taizong's reign (1244), the temple was destroyed by a wildfire. Soon after, construction began in the second year of Yuan Duzong's reign (1247), and it was completed in the eighteenth year of Yuan Shundi's reign (1358). Inside Yongle Palace, the Wuji Gate, Sanqing Hall, Chunyang Hall, and Chongyang Hall are all adorned with murals, covering a total area of about 960 square meters.
The most famous of these murals is the 'Chao Yuan Tu' on the walls of the Sanqing Hall, which depicts a scene of 286 gods from various Taoist sanctuaries paying homage to the Primordial Heavenly Venerable. The painting is grand in scale, with brilliant colors, and despite the multitude of figures, they are arranged in an orderly fashion. The gods are dressed in splendid attire, with flowing ribbons. It represents the pinnacle of Yuan Dynasty murals.
The author of 'Chao Yuan Tu' was originally thought to be the team led by Ma Junxiang, but later experts verified that Ma Junxiang likely only completed the eastern half. The more exquisite other half is attributed to the team of Zhu Haogu, with the most compelling evidence being the appearance of a peculiar ox-head shaped rock in the painting, which also appears in the murals created by Zhu Haogu's team at Xinghua Temple.

Yuncheng Tourist Annual Pass includes Ruicheng Yongle Palace, where the murals are still the Chaoyuan Map
After departing from the Yuncheng Salt Lake District to Ruicheng, it takes about 1 hour by car to get there. ☺️☺️☺️
Tickets: Free with the Yuncheng Tourist Annual Pass. The charging standard is 50/60 during off-peak/peak seasons. 💰
Parking: The parking lot is large and parking is convenient, with a fee of 10 for cars. 💰
Touring Time: About 2 hours (The flowers are blooming in spring, I spent more time taking pictures of the flowers, it wouldn't take that long just to look at the murals). 😊😊😊
⚠️⚠️⚠️Attention: Photography is not allowed for the murals, and shoe covers must be worn before entering the halls (no need to bring your own, they are available at each hall entrance, just put them on yourself).
The overall site is divided into the Dragon and Tiger Hall, the Sanqing Hall, the Chunyang Hall, and the Chongyang Hall.
❤️1. Dragon and Tiger Hall: The main attraction is the 2-meter glazed Chiwen on the roof ridge, which is very exquisite.
❤️2. Sanqing Hall: The murals in this hall are the famous Chaoyuan Map! A gathering of various deities, each with a different expression, makes you feel as if you are one of them, a bit immersive. The colors of the murals are relatively well preserved, only a few are slightly faded, and the entire wall is covered with paintings, which looks quite spectacular!
❤️3. Chunyang Hall: It features a series of story illustrations revolving around Lv Dongbin, with a style reminiscent of the 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival' superimposed on the 'Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains' painting, you can probably imagine the color scheme~
❤️4. Chongyang Hall: It features a series of illustrations revolving around Wang Chongyang, and the murals in this hall are relatively more faded, with some of the figures appearing patchy and incomplete.
😍😍😍In addition to the exquisite and spectacular murals, there were also many flowers blooming by the lake during my visit to Yongle Palace. I went there on March 19th, and it was still a bit early, only magnolias and peach blossoms were in bloom, while the redbuds were all buds waiting to bloom. It must be particularly beautiful when everything is in full bloom, so visiting recently would definitely be great for enjoying the flowers. 😎
Arriving at the most famous Taoist temple in Jinnan—Yongle Palace, it is famous for its mural art. The murals here are the treasures of existing mural art in China, comparable to Dunhuang murals. Yongle Palace is the largest existing Yuan Dynasty Taoist temple in our country, one of the three ancestral homes of Quanzhen Sect, and a palace-style Taoist architectural complex built in memory of the famous Taoist figure in the Tang Dynasty, who was later hailed as one of the Eight Immortals, Lu Dongbin. The Yongle Palace was started in the second year of the Yuan Dynasty Dingzong Guiyou (1247 AD), including murals, and it was completed in the eighteenth year of the Yuan Dynasty Zhizheng (1358 AD), and the construction period lasted for more than 110 years. The "Chao Yuan Tu" mural in the Sanqing Hall of Yongle Palace is a treasure of the Yuan Dynasty, with a grand scene and many characters. Photography is prohibited, and a few pictures have been downloaded from the guide, the colors are obviously P, and the actual effect is much darker. However, it is not easy for the murals of 700 years to be preserved to this day.
Tips: "Chao Yuan Tu" was completed in the second year of Yuan Taizheng (1325 AD), and was painted by Ma Junxiang and his son Ma Qi and others from Luoyang, Henan. The picture is 4.26 meters high and 94.6 meters long, depicting a grand scene of 290 Taoist gods and earth gods worshiping the highest respected god Yuan Shi Tianzun. The total area is 429.56 square meters. The mural is centered on eight 3-meter-high main gods (Nanji, Beiji, Dongji, Jade Emperor, Gou Chen, Mu Gong, Hou Tu, Jin Mu), with Qinglong and Baihu two star monarchs in front, and Tian Peng and Tian You two yuan generals behind, surrounded by immortal officials, celestial soldiers, strong men, Taiyi, servants, golden boys, jade girls, twenty-eight nights, thirty-two emperors, etc., gathering the great achievements of Tang and Song mural art, it is the peak masterpiece of the development of ancient temple murals in our country.

The stunning Yongle Palace in Ruicheng
Yongle Palace, originally named Dachunyang Wanshou Palace, was built in memory of one of the Eight Immortals, Lu Dongbin. It is commonly known as Yongle Palace because it was originally located in Yongle Town. It was built between 1247 and 1358 AD, and is considered one of the three major ancestral homes of Quanzhen Taoism, along with Baiyun Temple in Beijing and Chongyang Palace in Xi'an's Huyi District. It is a first-class national cultural relic protection unit.
When it was discovered in the first national cultural relic census in 1952, it caused a sensation and shocked the academic world. Experts at the time believed that Yongle Palace is a fine example of Yuan Dynasty architecture, the largest Taoist temple in the country, a model of ancient Chinese painting art, and one of the world's largest existing ancient mural art treasures. The 'Chao Yuan Tu' in the Sanqing Hall is a pinnacle of group composition development in the history of world painting, and is a rare masterpiece! In 1956, the central government decided to build the Sanmenxia Water Control Hub, and the original site of Yongle Palace was in the reservoir inundation area. In February 1957, with the approval of the State Council, the palace was relocated and preserved as a whole. From August 1958 to the eve of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1959, more than a thousand square meters of murals were successfully peeled off and relocated, and the entire structure of Yongle Palace was relocated to its current location by June 1960. By August 1966, all the murals had been restored and installed, and the relocation project was successfully completed. Such a large-scale relocation is a miracle!
The current location of Yongle Palace is in Longquan Village, about three kilometers north of Ruicheng County, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province. It is built within the ruins of the ancient capital of the Wei State during the Western Zhou Dynasty (a seventh-class national cultural relic protection unit). From south to north, there are the palace gate, the Wuji Gate, the Sanqing Hall (Wuji Hall), the Chunyang Hall, and the Chongyang Hall. In terms of overall architectural layout, there are no subsidiary buildings such as side halls on the east and west sides. In terms of architectural structure, the 'construction method' of the Song Dynasty and the 'column reduction method' of the Liao and Jin periods are used.
Therefore, when visiting Yongle Palace, one ticket can see two national key cultural relics protection units , not only can you appreciate the Yuan Dynasty murals with the remnants of the Tang and Song Dynasties, but also see the Yuan and Ming ancient buildings with the style of the Song and Jin Dynasties, and the ruins of the ancient city of the Western Zhou Dynasty . Fully experience the richness and diversity of Chinese historical and traditional culture, and the craftsmanship spirit of the cultural protection people of the Republic! Ruicheng County is still some distance from the main city of Yuncheng, and there are not many tourists here. If you avoid the summer vacation, May Day, National Day and other holidays, I believe you can have a perfect quiet trip!
Note: Photography is prohibited in several halls, and there are two to three security guards on duty in each hall. The management is very strict, so the murals can only be displayed with pictures from the Internet...
