Compared to Wuzhen, I have a deeper affection for this ancient town in Shanghai that doesn't require an entrance fee
Compared to Wuzhen‼️ I have a deeper affection for this ancient town in Shanghai that doesn't require an entrance fee.|| Wuzhen is indeed beautiful, but it has a stronger commercial atmosphere. In contrast, I prefer Zhujiajiao Ancient Town in Shanghai, whose scenery is no less stunning than Wuzhen's, yet it has a more authentic living atmosphere: potted plants at the street corners, smoke from the rooftops, clothes drying on the balconies, and delicious street food... No wonder locals from Shanghai also come here often to visit!
📍Address: No. 555, Kezhiyuan Road, Qingpu District, Shanghai.
🚇Transportation: You can take Metro Line 17 and get off at Exit 1 of Zhujiajiao Station (a 1.5 km walk is required), or take the 1510 tourist bus line at Exit 5, or take a boat into Zhujiajiao after exiting from Metro Exit 1.
🚗Self-driving: Navigate to Entrance 1 or Entrance 2 of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, both of which have parking lots.
🎫Ticket: No entrance fee is required, open all day. Some small attractions within the scenic area charge a fee (you can buy a joint ticket for 60 yuan/person, which includes Kezhiyuan, Hexinyuan, and Helong Art Museum).
➡️My travel route:
Starting from Entrance 1 of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town》Kezhiyuan》Hexinyuan》Fangsheng Bridge》Taian Bridge》Yuanjin Zen Monastery》North Street》Lang Bridge》Zhujiajiao Chenghuang Temple》Zhujiajiao Daqing Post Office
Just taking photos along the way and strolling and eating at will, that's roughly the casual route I took.
1️⃣Kezhiyuan, originally the private garden of Ma Wenqing, also known as 'Ma's Garden', where you can enjoy the landscape of Jiangnan gardens.
2️⃣Hexinyuan, also a garden-style architecture, slightly smaller than Kezhiyuan, but the scenery is equally impressive.
3️⃣Fangsheng Bridge, the 'longest', tallest, and largest five-arched bridge in Shanghai, where a life-release ceremony is held under the bridge on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month.
4️⃣Taian Bridge, the steepest single-arch bridge in the ancient town.
5️⃣Yuanjin Zen Monastery, originally enshrined the image of the Chen State Holy Mother, commonly known as the 'Goddess Temple'. Climbing the bell tower offers a view of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town.
6️⃣North Street, the busiest street in the town, with various art shops and food stores, including Handalong Soy Garden.
7️⃣Lang Bridge, this is the iconic building of the ancient water towns in the Jiangnan area.
8️⃣Zhujiajiao Chenghuang Temple, the temple enshrines the City God Lord and his wife.
9️⃣Zhujiajiao Daqing Post Office, established in 1903, where you can buy figurines and get stamps.
‼️【Hand-rowed Boat】There are several boat piers in the ancient town,
‼️【Zhujiajiao Ancient Town Delicacies】
For Shanghainese, childhood delicacies include the presence of Zhujiajiao, such as ginkgo tree grandma's rice dumplings, Handalong Soy Garden, tied meat, snails, fermented rice, mung bean cake, and so on...

Compared to Wuzhen, I love this ancient town even more, and it's free!
In the heart of Shanghai, a modern metropolis, lies a hidden, ancient, and tranquil water town world—Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. This ancient town, with a history of nearly 1700 years, is located in Qingpu District. It whispers the tales of time, quietly narrating the past's smoke and clouds. At the northern foot of Jiu Feng and by the shore of Dianshan Lake, the 47 square kilometers of the ancient town unfold like a folding fan, with ancient bridges over flowing water, whitewashed walls with black tiles, each brick and tile steeped in the gentleness and elegance of the Jiangnan region.
🏞️【Must-Visit Attractions】
- Fangsheng Bridge: As the largest and longest five-arch stone bridge in the Shanghai area, Fangsheng Bridge is not only known as 'the number one bridge in Shanghai' but also an excellent spot for capturing the scenery of the ancient town. Standing on the bridge, one can take in the full view of the ancient town and the surrounding lake and mountains.
- He Xin Garden: Stepping into He Xin Garden is like traveling back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. The garden not only preserves original objects from the Qing dynasty but also features the exquisite layout of a Jiangnan garden, with a different view at every step, making visitors linger and forget to return.
- Ke Zhi Garden: Ke Zhi Garden, which embodies the idea of 'not forgetting to cultivate while studying,' integrates a hall, rockery, and garden, showcasing the ideal living realm of ancient literati and is a must-visit for experiencing classical garden culture.
📍【Detailed Address】
Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is located in Zhujiajiao Town, Qingpu District, Shanghai, close to Dianshan Lake.
🚗【Transportation Tips】
- Public Transport: Take Metro Line 17 to Zhujiajiao Station, then transfer to a bus or taxi to reach the ancient town, about a 10-minute drive.
- Self-driving: Take the G50 Huyu Expressway and exit at Zhujiajiao, then follow the navigation to easily reach the destination. There are parking lots around the ancient town.
🍲【Food Recommendations】
- Grandma's Zongzi: Glutinous rice with fresh meat or red bean paste, a classic combination that is fragrant and delicious, is a must-try local snack in the ancient town.
- Zha Rou: Selected pork belly is marinated with a secret sauce and then cooked, resulting in a dish that is rich but not greasy, with a fragrant aroma.
- Stinky Tofu: Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, served with a special sauce, it is a great delicacy on the streets of the ancient town.
🏞️【Recommended Nearby Attractions】
- Dianshan Lake: After visiting the ancient town, you might want to go to the nearby Dianshan Lake, enjoy a walk by the lake, or participate in water activities, and feel the tranquility and vitality of nature.
- Oriental Land: Suitable for family trips, it offers a variety of outdoor expansion projects and educational bases, making it a great place to get close to nature and learn through fun.

This was an amazing visit with a beautiful landscape and aesthetics of this water town
🚗 - About 30+ km away from the hub of Shanghai about 120-190RMB if you decide to use DiDi or similar apps
🎟️- There are 3 price ranges of tickets when you get in 40 RMB, 60 RMB and 80 RMB they all cater to the places you can access. The 40RMB option is adequate enough. Most of the pictures are in the Kezhi Garden and each location is huge ❤️
🛶- If you’d like to get on the boat you can get them in front of the Kezhi Garden for 200 RMB. each boat can carry up to 6 people so the more people the cheaper to split
It’s definitely worth the fee for the views 😍

ZhuJiaJiao Water Town, a Lovely Site!
#meetshanghai ‘s one of the beautiful water town, Zhujiajiao.
If you’ve been to Qibao, this place is definitely MUCH bigger and better, and one of the more-accessible option compare to all the other ancient towns across the city.
Tips: check the weather before you go! I went there when it was cold and super windy and rainy, the only thing we could do was getting a hot bowl of TangYuan 汤圆 and coffee to keep us warm. Oh, and there’s a cafe with corgi as their mascot!
Have you been to this place before? What do you think?

1700 years old Zhujiajiao Water Town
this beautiful town is located in Qingpu District of Shanghai and has a history of more than 1,700 years!
It is said to be the Shanghai's Venice! Well, as Italian I can tell you that is very different than the Venice in Italy haha!!!
Anyway the Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town is a very well preserved ancient settlement and is just in Shanghai.
It has beautiful old bridges that cross the water streams, small rivers with willow trees, and old houses with courtyards with people leaving.
A small paradise in the bustle and hustle of the modern big city, during the weekdays!
On weekends and during holidays is quite busy and crowded.
Bridges are built during Ming and Qing Dynasties.
How to get there: metro.

One of the beautiful features of China is its rich history. What is one of the contributions to China's rich history is the ancient towns. China has a quite a number of ancient towns. When we walk along in the ancient towns, we feel as though we travel back in history. In this post, the ancient town we visit is Zhujiajiao in Shanghai.
Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is a water town in the south of the Yangtze River in Shanghai. The ancient town has a history of more than 1700 years. We stayed over there from day till nightfall. The scene during the day and night are both beautiful and give different feels.

Daywalk in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town
When visiting Shanghai don't miss to visit Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. It is almost at the end of metro line 17 and take some time to reach there. Along the main water there are a lot of small shops with, food, souvenirs and handmade crafts.
Try the short boat trip or take a photo of yourself in traditional Chinese clothes.

The water town known as Shanghai’s Venice
Zhujiajiao Water Village, is well-known throughout the country, with a history of more than 1,700 years. Covering an area of 47 square kilometers (11,614 acres), the little fan-shaped town, being regarded as Shanghai's Venice, glimmers like a bright pearl in the landscape of lakes and mountains.
Endowed with another elegant name - 'Pearl Stream' - the Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town is the best-preserved among the four ancient towns in Shanghai. Unique old bridges across bubbling streams, small rivers shaded by willow trees, and houses with courtyards attached all transport people who have been living amidst the bustle and hustle of the modern big city to a brand-new world full of antiquity, leisure and tranquillity.

Zhujiajiao 🇨🇳 Shanghai
A perfect day trip location and lots of B&B's to stay over in for those wanting to make a weekend of it.
The water town is a tourist site, so it'll be busy but, it has temples, gondola boat rides, food vendors, tea rooms, restaurants, bars and tons of bridges.
The food in Zhujiajiao is great for tourists as it isn't spicy and it's similar in taste to many western dishes.
My favorites are the pork knuckles which taste like pulled pork, the little pork belly pieces and the zhongzi.
In the day the town is busy and crowded with people, but as the sunsets on the town it becomes a quiet and peaceful place to wander with the different smells of cooking foods (stinky tofu). In the evening there are live music bars, a lovely tibetan restaurant, rice wine stalls and a number of snack stalls.
Getting there is really convenient via the metro, taxi or even cycling for those inclined. We've opted to cycle a number of times and the little cafe's and B&B's have been happy to accommodate our bikes.

Ahn Luh great place to try once
At Zhujiajiao area….there is an elegant and luxury hotel named "Ahn Luh Hotel" the hotel decorated by real wood with chinese craft. It is so impressive. Foods in hotel restaurant is so delicious. We went there during the National Holiday just for lunch as the rooms are fully booked. However, it was a right decision to go. Inside also have many Chinese hand writing to show on the wall. The staffs are so nice and warm welcome even we just came for lunch. Beside the restaurant is outdoor swimming pool. Actually we wanted to sit outside but it was so hot on that date. Anyway it is also my first time to see the swimming pool with wood decoration. I like this place very much.

After a full day of walking around the Ancient town ,eating and a great fish spa massage .You can walk a little bit out of the Ancient Town and grab a drink at a relatively hidden small bar T&F Lucky. This is exactly what you need after a long day in the sun .I found the drinks reasonable ,but the tequila shot I ordered was expensive,48¥ ,that was the most expensive tequila shot I’ve had in Shanghai .It is very chilled and ideal for relaxing before heading home.

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, Shanghai
Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, known as the Venice of Shanghai, a 1700-year-old town from Ming-Qing dynasty. You can plan for this exquisite old town for a half-day or one day trip from Suzhou or Shanghai. From Suzhou it's just an hour drive.
Highlights: Museum of Humanities, Tibetan Culture Museum, Qing Dynasty Post Office, City God Temple, Handicraft Museum, Yuan Jin Temple, Kezhi Garden and boat ride on the river Caogang.

Sometimes Zhujiajiao can be unbearably busy, but I still love strolling through the narrow alleyways, watching the boats drift along the canal and trying all the different snacks you can buy while there! plus a walk through the gardens never goes amiss. It’s so peaceful and tranquil when away from the main street of this water town.

Imagine yourself in the old world of the 江湖, the lakes and rivers, as you stroll along the narrow lanes of Zhujiajiao in western Shanghai, or more authentically, ride a gondola up and down its peaceful water streets.
With snack and souvenir shops wherever the eye can see, this is village seems thoroughly transformed into a tourist trap, but look more closely and you can see locals still hang their laundry outside their ancient houses and plant vegetables along the river.
I went on a holiday so it was predictably crowded, but except for the bottleneck of the main bridge, it wasn't too bad. I recommend going on a weekday if possible though.
The surrounding new town of Zhujiajiao has some more reasonbly priced food but otherwise has little of interest to visitors; just come for the old town.
Zhujiajiao is very easily accessible by taking line 17 of the Shanghai Metro to the penultimate station. The scenic area is a short walk from the metro station, or you can take a boat.

With we all caught up in the fast paced environment, there's no better place for a quick rehab than relapsing our time back to (g)olden days. To go visit that place, where was life was mucb slower and everyone is at their own pace of doing things. The life that we envy about. With very well connected metro station, Shanghai is in no way short of multi cultural places. This is another face of Shanghai, on preserving it's culture. On the first day, go to 朱家角 the water town is situated at the last but one stop in line 17. You have to walk a little bit to go there and get into the town. After that just cross the big bridge to see all the old buildings, also there's always boatman with their mini boats riding people below the bridge. It's such a sight to watch. Then keep going on to your right side, to go the very end to visit the garden temple. Then do a straight opposite side walk to go to the start of the boating place where can pay around 50¥ to have a ride. On the way there are lot of 小吃 to enjoy.
The next day you can go to the Qibao old town which again has a perfect Metro connectivity at Line 9 (Qibao station). Have a look around this wonderful place and you can even dress up like traditional chinese men/women.
The last day have a hop on tour around yuyuan garden using sightseeing bus and later go to the Jingan temple where again there's a very old temple that provides some calm and serenity. Have a traditional Shanghai this time guys. #qingmingtravel #urbanexplorer
