A low-key tourist destination! Semporna
Located in a county of Tawau City, Sabah, Malaysia, Semporna is an underestimated resort. Once just a small fishing village that couldn't be found on the map, it has now developed into a world-famous underwater tourism center.
Semporna has nearly twenty islands of different sizes, including the overwater bungalow Kapalai Island known in Southeast Asia, the one-island-one-hotel Mabul, the home of the sea gypsies Mabul Island, the hometown of sea fish Bum Bum Island, and the Tun Sakaran where you can overlook the panorama of Semporna. Each island has its unique features.
Here are some recommended islands:
Bum Bum Island: This is a typical private island with pure white beaches and a variety of beach houses and overwater bungalows to choose from. There are two resorts on the island.
Mataking Island: This island is larger in area, lush in vegetation, without overwater bungalows, only sea view and garden view cottages, very suitable for experiencing deep diving.
Kapalai Island: Strictly speaking, this is not an island, but a sandbar. The resorts on the island are all small wooden houses built on the water, which are popular honeymoon destinations for couples.
In addition, Tun Sakaran also has a marine park with eight islands of different sizes, including Gaya Island, Sleeping Beauty Island, Mandabuan and Meiga Island. Except for the military island where troops are stationed, the other three islands all have Bajau villages.

Islands you must visit in Semporna
📍Attraction Address: This island is Mataking Island, as shown in picture five. I would call it the MVP. It's really beautiful, no filter, very blue, like a fairyland.
🚗Attraction Transportation: You can join a group to go snorkeling or diving on the island. It's particularly easy to see turtles while diving here. I recommend joining a yacht tour for a more enjoyable experience.
👍️Must-visit Attraction: The place we went for lunch at noon is called Pom Pom Island, which is also very beautiful, as shown in picture one.
🎟️Ticket Information: It costs about 1000💰 per person. If I remember correctly, it should be called Tianyu.
💗Other Tips: The crew on the yacht will sing and dance. The service is very good.
Bucket list: 6 things you must do in Semporna
Release a baby sea turtle
Watch the Bajau people rowing their boats
Take photos on the sandbar
Stay in a water villa
Snorkeling in Mataking
Bargain at the seafood market
-
❤️ Release a baby sea turtle
Resorts like Mataking, White Pearl, and Dragon Pearl have their own sea turtle conservation bases. When baby sea turtles hatch, the resort will notify you of the release time the next day. You can participate and watch the baby sea turtles run towards the sea. It's very healing.
-
❤️ Watch the Bajau people rowing their boats
You can stay in MWB water villa or join the Kapalai + Mabul Island island hopping day tour. You can see the small wooden boats sailing on the jelly sea, carrying seafood and coconuts. Take a set of "seafood stalls" cultural photos. Coconuts are about 5 Malaysian Ringgit each.
-
❤️ Take photos on the sandbar
There are two island hopping routes. The Mataking 3 Islands route goes to Timba Timba Sandbar, and the Tun Sakaran Marine Park route goes to Warship Island Sandbar. If you stay at Mataking Resort, you can also go to their private sandbar, which is even more beautiful.
-
❤️ Stay in a water villa
Stay in a secluded wooden house on the sea. Take photos on the flower-filled wooden plank road, watch the sunset and stars on the balcony. It's romantic and comfortable, but you must stay in a water villa with good water quality. Otherwise, snorkeling is not worth it, and photos are not good. The ceiling of Semporna water villa: Kapalai
-
❤️ Snorkeling in Mataking
If you don't have a diving certificate, you can go snorkeling in Mataking. There are many fish, sea turtles, and corals. The sea is very clear. It's a feast for the eyes! Island hopping route: Mataking 3 Islands
-
❤️ Bargain at the seafood market
Take a bunch of seafood you've bargained for to the restaurant for processing. It's very rewarding. You can put down your "i" and bargain with your voice. When the local black people get angry, they will speak some random Chinese words. You are beautiful, but you have no money...

Visit Semporna! Avoiding pitfalls is the right way to open it up
Semporna is a county in Tawau City, Sabah, located on the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia. It has a population of about 167,000. Semporna was originally just a small fishing village in Malaysia, so obscure that it couldn't even be found on a map, but now it has gradually developed into a world-famous underwater tourism center. If you want to go to Semporna, it's important to plan well and avoid pitfalls as the correct approach.
When is the best time to travel?
The average temperature in Semporna is around 29°C, with low rainfall. It generally cools down at night, and the temperature difference throughout the year is quite steady without significant fluctuations or distinct seasonal changes. Therefore, the best time to travel to Semporna is from February to October. November to January of the following year is the rainy season. The rain usually comes in showers and stops after a while. This period is not very suitable for diving as the underwater visibility is not high, but it does not greatly affect tourism.
What diving activities are available?
Snorkeling: Available near the offshore resort islands and on day trips.
Scuba diving: Experience deep diving, OW certified deep diving, AOW certified deep diving.
How to choose between water chalets and sand chalets?
There are many water chalets in Semporna, and it's essential to understand them clearly. Check whether they provide 24-hour hot water supply, wireless internet, private bathrooms, airport transfers, etc. Everyone can choose a suitable resort according to their situation. (Listed from high to low quality)
Mataking, Mabul Island MWB, Kapalai, etc. are of higher quality.
Mabul Island's SWV, SMART, Bong Bong Island's Dragon Ball, White Pearl, Arcadia, etc.
Budget water chalets, such as Dayang, Lotte, Crystal, Coral Sea, Shunshun, Dayang, Lotte, etc.
Alternatively, stay in town and participate in island hopping, sea fishing, Lover's Bay day trips, etc.
Travel Tips
1. Malaysian phone card celcom, wireless is generally poor on some islands.
2. British standard plug adapters.
3. Tourists themselves: Do not touch marine life casually, do not climb trees, do not perform dangerous actions at sea, and follow the resort's guidance. If you encounter the indigenous Bajau people, pretend not to see them and do not give them any alms to avoid a crowd scrambling.
4. It is not recommended to stay in remote lodgings.
Semporna's Mabul Island Jellyfish Sea Bungalow
Semporna is really worth the visit! Every island is so beautiful, and the sea is super clear.
Here's a brief summary of the main itinerary:
Day 1 Timbatimba-Madai-Bonbon Island (Photo shoot at Timbatimba's trailing sand beach
Snorkeling & diving at Madai Bonbon Island🤿)
Saw big turtles🐢, schools of fish🐟, and starfish while diving
Personally, I think these few days had the most beautiful underwater scenery for diving and snorkeling
Day 2 Mabul Island-Kapalai (Checked in at the flower bungalow, met Bajau children🥥)
Day 3 Jellyfish Sea Bungalow🏖️
After much research, I chose the Jellyfish Sea Bungalow
Pros: Direct access to the water
Clear water, decent room decor
Beautiful sunrise and sunset, vanity facing the sea
Cons: The swimming pool in our room was not yet fixed, looked like a construction site
Don't expect too much from the meals
No coffee machine, only instant coffee
Day 4 Pearl Island-Ocean Park-Mandabuan Island-Warship Island
Hiked to overlook the entire panorama of Tun Sakaran Marine Park
Snorkeling & diving at Mandabuan Island🤿
Warship Island trailing sand beach photo shoot🏖️Snorkeling & diving🤿
Aside from getting several shades darker, the mood of this trip was still very beautiful~

Don't go to Tyrande to crowd people, go to Semporna to see the glass sea!
This is Semporna, a place not inferior to the Maldives!
💌 There is really nothing interesting in Semporna town, and there are many idle people (for example, if you go to 7-11 to buy things, there will be children blatantly asking for things), so don’t stay in the town if you can go directly to the island!
💌 If you have to stay for one night, I recommend Haifeng Hotel, which is on a small island next to the town (really small), but there are Starbucks around (seems like the only one in Semporna), and KFC, a Chinese seafood restaurant Shop, the environment is already very good in the local area
📖 Some small blind spots: To go to Semporna, you can transfer from Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu, so Tawau! ! ! It takes about an hour and a half from Tawau Airport to the town, and the transportation method can be directly downloaded Grad taxi or carpooling at the airport gate.
As a popular tourist destination in the world, Malaysia has a superior geographical location and abundant island resources. Especially on the east coast of Sabah in East Malaysia, "Semporna" is home to many beautiful small islands, and the scenery of the islands is as beautiful as a fairyland.
The sea in Semporna is one of the most beautiful seas I have ever seen. Because of its special geographical advantages, Semporna is a natural safe haven, which is rarely damaged by natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes. The sea is calm, the sea is crystal clear, and the beach is white and soft. It is an excellent choice for island vacations.
Semporna is located at the junction of the three countries of Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. There are many outlying islands around, including Pom Pom Island. Natural and secluded.
Take a fast boat from Semporna, and you can arrive at Bang Bang Island in about 40 minutes. When I set foot on the island, I was attracted by this quiet "paradise from the world", which can satisfy the needs of "island control". All imaginations, fine white sandy beaches, blue waters, quiet jungles, and simple islanders make people fall in love at first sight.
Bang Bang Island is not big, only 2.3 kilometers around the island, there are no villages on it, only a few fishermen's huts, which are in the original state. Going to Bang Bang Island for vacation and enjoying an isolated life has also become the best choice for urbanites to "escape and let go". Bangbang Island is far away from the hustle and bustle, isolated from the world, and there is no Internet on the island. Except for resort hotels, most places are "virgin land". People just want to abandon their work, turn off their mobile phones, empty their brains, and enjoy this primitive life quietly. atmosphere.
The tourist accommodation facilities on the island are limited, and everything is kept simple and natural. Most of the holiday cottages use coconut bark as walls, and wood as floors and ceilings. Tourists experience authentic island life in the primitive nature. Of course, there are also more luxurious "sea villa" resorts to choose from.
The marine ecology of the sea area around Semporna has not been destroyed, the sea water is high-quality, and the underwater life is rich. It is an excellent diving paradise, attracting countless diving enthusiasts to come here for a "pilgrimage". If you don't dive deep into the sea, snorkeling around is also a wonderful holiday enjoyment.
You can snorkel under the pier trestle not far from the shore. The sea water is about three or four meters deep. There are various forms of corals and fishes growing. It is an eye-opener and immersed in the joy brought by the tropical ocean. It can be said that this is the most beautiful underwater world I have seen in Southeast Asia. At dusk, you can also encounter splendid sunsets on the beach.
There are only a few resorts and fishermen's houses on Bang Bang Island. Most of these fishermen are the local "Bajau people". They still live in the "sea" and live in houses built in the water. It is a unique cultural landscape in the local area to live by fishing or working illegally.
Famous Underwater World Tourist Center • Semporna
🌟Highlight features:
Semporna is a famous underwater world tourism center, which means "perfect" in the Bajau and Malay languages.
Xenbenna was once just a small fishing village, but as the neighboring diving paradise Sipadan became more and more famous, Xenbenna gradually became known to outsiders. It is surrounded by turquoise sea water, and it and its affiliated islands are like a dream island in the real world. The white sandy beaches 🏖️, towering coconut trees, colorful corals 🪸, and fish 🐟 swimming in the sea 🌊 always attract tourists from all over the world.
The indigenous people of Simpang Beluru belong to the Bajau tribe, also known as the Bajao tribe. They "live by the sea" and rely on diving to catch fish 🐟 for a living, and are considered the last oceanic nomadic ethnic group. Most of them live in long-legged wooden houses 🏠 in the sea, and use a water transportation tool called "lepa" in their daily lives. Many fishermen also live on handmade boats all year round.
❤️Recommendation reason:
In the waters of Semporna, there are islands of all sizes, and the four most popular👏 islands are: Pom Pom Island, Mataking Island, Kapalai Island, and Mabul Island. Each of the four has its own unique style, suitable for tourists with different preferences.
✅Bang Bang Island: A typical private island with pure white sandy beaches 🏖️
✅Madajingdao Island: With a large area and lush vegetation, it is an excellent place to experience deep diving 🤿.
✅Kapalai Island: Actually, it can't be called an island, it's just a sandbank. The holiday ⛱️village here is directly built on the water with small wooden houses. It is a honeymoon paradise popular among couples.
✅Ma Bu Island: Half of the island is a resort, while the other half is inhabited by the Bao Yao ethnic minority. The life and cultural atmosphere of the indigenous people, combined with other beautiful coastal scenery, form the unique landscape of Xianbenna.
Here, you can go diving 🤿, boating, surfing, or set off to several famous islands from here.
