Portugal looks simple on a rail map—but Lisbon’s hills, Sintra’s timed monuments, Porto’s slopes and the real hotel-to-hotel transfer can make one week feel much shorter than expected. This route uses: 7 FULL USABLE DAYS Arrive in Lisbon before Day 1 and depart from Porto after Day 7. The cleanest structure is: · Lisbon — 5 nights · Porto — 3 nights · 2 accommodation bases · 1 hotel change · 1 Sintra day trip · 1 Lisbon–Porto rail transfer The goal is not to fit every famous place into one week. It is to create a route that still works after hills, meals, luggage, queues, weather and ordinary tiredness are counted. ## 🇵🇹 Day 1 — Historic Lisbon Start higher in Chiado and descend into Baixa. Use Baixa for a proper coffee, lunch or recovery block rather than treating it as somewhere to walk through quickly. Later, take a tram, bus, taxi or ride-hail to one practical upper-Alfama entry point, then explore selected lanes downhill. A balanced sequence is: Chiado → Baixa recovery → transport to upper Alfama → downhill exploration → dinner in Alfama or central Lisbon Do not turn the day into one continuous circuit through: · Chiado · Baixa · Bairro Alto · Alfama · several viewpoints · a full tram route Lisbon’s best walking sections are not the same as walking every hill. ### Lower-energy version Use: · Chiado and Baixa · one transported viewpoint · a shorter Alfama descent · transport back to the hotel ## 🏛️ Day 2 — Belém Treat Belém as a dedicated western-Lisbon day. Build the route around one principal reservation. Choose: · Jerónimos Monastery; or · Belém Tower when current access suits the itinerary Then add one secondary layer: · a major museum · riverside landmarks · or a slower waterfront walk Do not assume every monument, museum and waterfront attraction fits comfortably into the same day. A realistic structure is: Morning — one principal interior Afternoon — one museum or outdoor riverside layer Evening — return to central Lisbon for dinner Days 1, 2 and 4 may be reordered around: · current closure days · timed-entry availability · restoration or access changes · weather · energy The itinerary keeps the Belém role fixed—not necessarily the weekday. ## 🌲 Day 3 — Sintra The strongest first-timer plan is: · one principal monument · historic-centre lunch · town time · return to Lisbon ### Standard Pena-led day Morning: · train from Rossio to Sintra · local hill transport · timed Pena Palace visit Afternoon: · lunch in the historic centre · town exploration · return to Lisbon Do not add another major monument by default. ### Town-led alternative Choose: · Quinta da Regaleira; or · Sintra National Palace Then add: · historic-centre time · lunch · an earlier return to Lisbon This version is stronger when: · visibility is poor · the traveller wants simpler transport · hill access is disrupted · a lower-energy day is preferred ### Active version Pena Palace + Moorish Castle Use only with: · an early start · suitable weather · strong walking ability · separately confirmed access and reservations Do not automatically combine Sintra with: · Cabo da Roca · Cascais · Monserrate · Regaleira · several hill monuments A successful Sintra day protects one major experience instead of collecting attractions. ## ☕ Day 4 — Lisbon Flex Day Keep this day movable. It is not an empty day. It protects the complete itinerary against: · poor Sintra visibility · monument closures · timed-entry changes · arrival fatigue · accumulated hill load · wet or very hot weather Use it for: · one museum · one nearby neighbourhood · food and café time · a waterfront section · a lower-energy Lisbon day · or a Sintra weather swap When Day 4 has better Sintra conditions: Move Sintra to Day 4 and use Day 3 for Lisbon. Do not delete the flex day simply to add Coimbra, the Douro Valley or another day trip. Flexibility is part of the itinerary—not unused time. ## 🚆 Day 5 — Lisbon to Porto Treat this as a real hotel-to-hotel transfer day. Choose a practical daylight train that protects both: · a calm Lisbon checkout; and · a low-pressure Porto arrival Do not assume the earliest train is automatically the strongest option. Count the full transfer: · breakfast · hotel checkout · travel to the station shown on the ticket · boarding and luggage · the rail journey · arrival at Campanhã where applicable · onward transport to the hotel · check-in · food and recovery After arrival, keep the evening light. Choose one: · Aliados or Bolhão · São Bento surroundings · a simple dinner near the hotel · a riverfront meal reached by transport Do not prebook: · a tight afternoon attraction · a long historic-centre walk · a fixed cellar visit immediately after arrival When the train or hotel transfer runs late: Check in → eat nearby → move the introduction to Day 6 or Day 7 The value of the transfer day is a calm Porto arrival—not maximum sightseeing. ## 🌉 Day 6 — Historic Porto Start higher in the city and finish beside the river. ### Morning — Upper Porto Use: · Bolhão or Aliados · the São Bento area · one historic or cultural priority ### Afternoon — Descend to Ribeira Use: · selected historic streets · a riverfront meal · slower time beside the Douro ### Evening Choose one: · remain in Ribeira · cross once to Gaia · or move a cellar experience to Day 7 Gaia is optional. Do not make the day depend on: · repeated bridge crossings · several viewpoints · another climb back to the upper centre · a compulsory late cellar booking ### Lower-energy version Upper-centre start → controlled downhill route → Ribeira → return by metro, taxi or ride-hail Porto works best as one deliberate descent—not a hill-to-river shuttle. ## 🌊 Day 7 — Porto Depth or Porto Coast Keep the final day local. ### Option A — Porto depth Choose: · food or market time · one cultural interior · a slower central neighbourhood · Gaia or a cellar experience omitted from Day 6 ### Option B — Porto Coast In suitable weather, use: · Foz · Atlantic scenery · a lower-density local afternoon Foz is west of central Porto and remains part of the Porto stay. It is not another regional base. ### Poor-weather option Use: · a museum · indoor culture · food and café time · shorter central walking · metro or taxi movement Do not add a full Douro Valley day to the standard seven-day route. Porto deserves two complete local days after the transfer. ## 🛏️ Where should you stay? The route works best with only two accommodation bases. ### Lisbon — Baixa or lower Chiado The strongest general operating base. Best for: · central sightseeing · Rossio–Sintra access · dining · lower-gradient movement Check: · exact lift access · street noise · vehicle pickup ### Lisbon — Avenida or Restauradores A lower-friction alternative. Best for: · metro · taxis · luggage · wider-road access Trade-off: Less old-quarter atmosphere outside the door. ### Lisbon — Alfama Choose for historic atmosphere. Check carefully: · stairs · cobbles · lift access · luggage handling · vehicle access · noise ### Porto — Baixa, Aliados or Bolhão The strongest general Porto base. Best for: · metro access · dining · starting walking days higher in the city · easier evening returns ### Porto — Ribeira Choose for riverfront atmosphere. Check: · uphill return · cobbled access · lift availability · luggage · vehicle pickup The most atmospheric address is not always the easiest operating base. ## ✈️ Open jaw or return to Lisbon? The cleanest seven-day flight structure is: Arrive Lisbon → depart Porto This avoids another intercity rail journey. The complete route can also run in reverse: Arrive Porto → depart Lisbon Reverse the full day order and keep Sintra inside the Lisbon block. When the international flight departs from Lisbon after starting in Lisbon and finishing in Porto, use: Day 8 — Porto to Lisbon gateway or place the return rail journey and Lisbon gateway night outside the seven advertised usable days. Returning to Lisbon inside Day 7 means: · Porto loses its second full local day · another intercity transfer is added · the route becomes less balanced Seven full usable days protect the open-jaw version. Eight usable days are stronger when Lisbon must remain the final gateway. ## ✂️ Five-day cut-down With only five full usable days, choose depth or two cities. ### Strongest general option — Lisbon + Sintra Use: · Historic Lisbon · Belém · Sintra · Lisbon depth · one flexible Lisbon module Benefits: · one accommodation base · no intercity luggage move · strong weather flexibility ### Two-city alternative — Lisbon + Porto Use: · Lisbon — 2 full days · transfer — 1 day · Porto — 2 full days Requirement: Omit Sintra. Can’t decide between a quick city break or a peaceful nature escape? My favorite trips combine both! After spending a couple of days exploring historic urban streets, I love heading out to the rugged coastline to watch the Atlantic Ocean churn around the iconic lighthouse. The contrast is incredible: trading packed cafes and stone alleys for towering ocean cliffs, salty breezes, and dramatic wide-angle vistas. Porto has plenty of postcard moments, but I found the city much more interesting when I wandered away from Ribeira and the busiest streets. My first stop was Jardim das Virtudes, a beautiful terraced garden overlooking the Douro. I arrived in the late afternoon, grabbed a drink nearby, and stayed until the light turned golden over the river. It felt relaxed and very local. Then I explored Miragaia, where colorful old houses climb the hillside above the river. Walking along the narrow streets and watching boats pass below felt much quieter than the nearby Ribeira. My third discovery was Passeio Alegre, where the Douro meets the Atlantic. The palm lined garden, river views, and nearby lighthouses made it a lovely place to slow down, especially toward sunset. I still visited Livraria Lello, Clérigos Tower, São Bento Station, Ribeira, Dom Luís I Bridge, Palácio da Bolsa, and Vila Nova de Gaia, but these three places gave me a slower, more relaxed Porto and honestly, that was the side I enjoyed most. #porto #portugal

Porto is the kind of city that makes you want to keep walking just to see what’s around the next corner. Colourful tiled buildings, steep cobbled streets, tiny balconies, grand churches and the River Douro running through the middle of it all — there’s something incredibly atmospheric about this Portuguese city. And the best part? Some of Porto’s most memorable experiences are completely free. Start by wandering through the historic centre and down towards the Ribeira, where colourful houses tumble towards the riverfront. From here, walk across the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge for one of the best views of Porto. The upper level gives you an incredible perspective over the rooftops, river and Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite bank. Porto is also a city where you should spend some time looking up. 💙 Many buildings and churches are covered in beautiful Portuguese azulejo tiles, creating those unmistakable blue-and-white façades. São Bento railway station is particularly impressive — step inside and you’ll find its entrance hall covered with thousands of tiles depicting scenes from Portuguese history. For another free experience, wander through Jardim do Morro on the Gaia side of the river. It’s one of the best places to sit and watch the sun disappear behind Porto, with the bridge and historic city spread out in front of you. 🌅 Then there are Porto’s streets themselves. Explore the lanes around Ribeira, wander along Rua das Flores, discover little squares and viewpoints, and walk beside the Douro. Porto is hilly — your legs will definitely know about it by the end of the day — but those hills are also responsible for some spectacular views. And then there’s the food. 🇵🇹 Try a francesinha, Porto’s famously indulgent sandwich layered with meat, covered in melted cheese and served in a rich sauce. Look out for tripas à moda do Porto, traditional bacalhau dishes, grilled sardines, pastéis de nata and plenty of Portuguese pastries along the way. If you're looking for a way to slow down, challenge yourself, time for introspection, you need to get over something or you just want a chance to have long deep chats with new people... I can't recommend walking this coastal trail enough! With just 10 days (even if I recommend to have 3-4 extra ones to visit Porto and Santiago) you can walk from Porto, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, all along the ocean on one of the most stunning and peaceful coastal trails! Originally a religious pilgrimage, today the Camino de Santiago is walked by many for different reasons that often have nothing to do with religion at all (this was my case too!), what's still needed is a open heart, respect for the nature and places you'll be going through and willingness to share (spaces, stories, meals...) and be grounded and humble. You'll spend your nights mostly in communal albergues, most of them are on first come first serve basis, cheap on purpose to allow anyone to be part of this experience, usually 5-15€. Other accommodations of different types and tiers are usually available (might need to book in advance, I used Trip.com for hostels occasionally and for my stay in Porto!) but I truly recommend to enjoy this to the fullest by sharing your days and nights with other people walking the same path as you. You can use the official Camino de Santiago website to plan your itinerary to perfectly fit your needs and physical abilities, you might need more or less days than I did or you might prefer to take breaks along the way to enjoy the stunning beaches along the ocean. I met incredible people, ate delicious food and got a chance so visit many smaller hidden gem towns and nature spots that normal travelling wouldn't normally let you stop by... This time, I skipped the fresh produce and explored the other shops in search of souvenirs! I went around 10:00 AM on a weekday, and since it wasn't overly crowded, I was able to take my time looking around. There were so many souvenirs, including bowls and magnets featuring Portugal's famous blue azulejo tile motifs, as well as adorable tins of sardine oil and various other seafood 🐠💙 Some of the canned goods even had Japanese descriptions, so it might be a popular spot among Japanese tourists ☺️ There was also a flower shop, and since it was the day of the Festa de São João (Festival of St. John), potted basil plants were on sale 🌱 By the way, during the Festa de São João, there's a tradition of gifting potted basil to your romantic partner or friends as a symbol of love and good luck ♡ It was so much fun browsing all the cute souvenirs, and some shops even accepted credit cards! As soon as I stepped out of the train from the airport into the city center, the "Church of Almas" unfolded before my eyes! The vibrant blue azulejo (decorative tiles) were breathtaking, and I was instantly drawn into the world of Porto ✨ Egg tarts (pastel de nata) are a must-try when in Porto! First, I headed to the famous shop 【FÁBRICA NATA】. The freshly baked egg tart (1.5€) was absolutely delicious, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside! Sprinkled with cinnamon, it was definitely one of the top three (no, the best!) egg tarts I've ever had! Amazing! The azulejo tiles covering the walls were breathtakingly beautiful! The top and bottom of the can have different shades of color, and I was deeply moved by the history of how it has been carefully restored and maintained over the years. 🥹 There were so many interesting shops along the way! · Mundo Fantástico da Sardinha Portuguesa: A sardine can specialty shop that's like a theme park! They have a Japanese guide, and you can even find cans printed with your birth year! And then, in the evening, I went to the São João Festival, Porto's biggest event, which was taking place at the time!
