[Procida Island, Italy] We recommend the colorful Corricella district
Procida Island, accessible by boat from Naples, Italy, is famous as the filming location for the Italian movie 'Il Postino (The Postman).' The story revolves around a poor and simple postman, Mario, who meets the poet Pablo Neruda, exiled from Chile due to political upheaval. Through Pablo's poetry, Mario learns to express his feelings and speak of love, deepening their friendship beyond that of a poet and a postman, or a teacher and a student.
In the movie, Mario records 'eight beautiful things of the island' for Pablo, who has returned to his homeland, Chile. These include the gentle waves against the cliffs, the strong waves, the wind blowing against the cliffs, the wind in the bushes, the sad sound of his father's fishing nets, the lamenting bells of the Madonna church and the priest's voice, the sound of the starry sky, the heartbeat of his child within his lover Beatrice, and finally, Mario's words: 'When you left, I thought you took all the beautiful things with you. But in truth, you left many behind.' The final scene where Pablo listens to this recording is deeply moving.
You can feel fragments of the beauty Mario sought in the Corricella district, a 15-minute walk from the port. Here, colorful pastel houses in pink, lemon yellow, blue, and white line the coast, painted so fishermen can recognize their homes from the sea. The charming scenery, with laundry fluttering against the backdrop of these houses, feels like a scene from a movie!
Apart from this colorful port, there aren't many tourist attractions. However, strolling around the island while observing the local lifestyle is enjoyable. You can fully appreciate the colors of the sky and sea, savor delicious seafood, and experience the simple charm of southern Italy. The small port also has several restaurants, making it a great spot for a lunch visit.
