Our first stop this summer vacation with the kids was Yunnan! We originally planned to go to Xishuangbanna, but after reading too many travel guides (thinking about the commercialization like in Hongcun was painful 😭), we decisively changed course to the off-the-beaten-path treasure—Pu'er! Don’t squeeze into the trendy Zhuanxin Market, Donghua Market is the locals’ favorite, full of lively atmosphere! Afternoon: Asia’s largest flower market! Headed to Dounan Flower Market, flowers were so cheap it was shocking, and there were all kinds of flowers and plants never seen before—eye-opening! Evening: Quick tour of the old street. Had a meal on Kunming’s old street and bought some fresh flower cakes. Old streets are similar everywhere, just a quick visit is enough. 📍 D3: Kunming → Pu'er (staying in the forest! 🌳) Took the high-speed train for over 3 hours to Pu'er. Booked the Asia-Pacific Forest Base Hotel in advance, which was super thoughtful and arranged pick-up. Ordered dishes with the hotel on the way, started eating as soon as we arrived. Afternoon: Forest crafts. At 2 pm, participated in the hotel’s plant specimen making activity, the kids were very happy to get hands-on. Evening: Exploring the little forest! At 9 pm, joined the night insect watching activity (book in advance!), using flashlights to find little bugs, the kids were super excited! Heard it’s much wilder than the artificial routes in Xishuangbanna, the kids explored new and interesting plants all along (photos 8-9). Afternoon: Moved to the city. After hiking, returned to stay in Pu'er city (chose Holiday Inn Express). Evening: Mushroom feast! The locally recommended “Wazhen” mushroom restaurant. Emphasizing again: when eating mushrooms, choose reputable big or chain restaurants for safety and peace of mind! It’s mushroom season, super fresh! D5: Private car day tour (tea garden + red panda + coffee!) Morning: Refreshing tea garden time. The driver suggested going to the tea garden first (worried about afternoon rain), very wise! The tea garden was less crowded in the morning, no sun, and the air was super fresh. Experienced the whole process of picking and making tea, the kids learned very well. Afternoon: Exclusive forest visit to see red pandas! Went to Sun River Forest Park, perfectly avoided tour groups! Felt like the whole forest was ours! The ecology was excellent, and the animals were in great condition (especially the adorable red pandas!). Tickets only 100 yuan, a must-go with kids! Highly recommended! I usually choose hotels based on the principle of staying in new hotels rather than old ones, and choosing chain hotels rather than independent hotels. But when I come to Pu'er and choose to stay in Simao City, the options become very few. As the only international chain hotel in Simao District, this newly opened Ibis Styles seems to be the only option. As soon as you enter the hotel, the hotel lobby is brightly colored, with simple yet interesting decorations, combined with dragon blood tree wall coverings, creating a sense of vacation. This combination not only enriches the spatial hierarchy, but also gives the hotel a unique regional flavor. The Tea and Horse Road of Southwest China, aka the " Silk Road of Southwest China" – but called Chamagudao in Chinese (cha-ma-gu-dao = Tea-Horse-Ancient-Road) – is an old trade route that stretched east to west and south to north across southwest China. This ancient trade routes eventually came to be renowned for the two main commodities for which the routes were named: tea and horses, though there were other important commodities such as sugar and salt – but curiously, not silk – that were traded along these routes. Our own Tea Horse Road adventure began in the township of Pu'er, approximately 400 kilometers south of Kunming. The excursion passed through some of the mountains and steep valleys that are signatures of the Yunnan landscape. Eventually, the corn and wheat along the roadside gave way to bananas, rubber and, eventually, tea.

Obviously, Pu'er is known for its famous tea and the tea-growing areas around it. Therefore, any visit to the city wouldn't be complete without a stop here at the Pu'er Tea Museum. We wanted to learn more about this important commodity, so this museum provided us with the answers. We learned about the various local ethnic groups and their relationships with tea, the history of the local area and the Tea Horse Road and also about the process of making the teas. We went here in the morning and admission was free. The staff were also very nice and polite. Getting here is easy by taxi or private car, although it was basically next to our hotel anyway. It's definitely best to come here and learn about the history before visiting a plantation or the Tea Horse Road, as it definitely adds a perspective on everything and enbables you to better understand everything. The ancient town at Tea Horse Road is relatively easy to get to by taxi or private car, as Pu'er is a small place and this is easy to find. Arriving here, we took a nice stroll along the canal and through the scenic old town area, stopping for iced coffee and lunch also. Prices are not expensive here, even though this is considered a tourist site. The buildings were great to look at, as well as the old ancient walls that are built around the old town. We came just before Chinese New Year, therefore the place wasn't that busy, especially in the afternoon we visited. If you are in Pu'er, then it's definitely a place to visit along with the tea museum and seeing a plantation. Getting There - after going to xishuangbanna, we took the high speed train which took 20minutes to puer. the trains run all day at intervals of 20-40minutes. Attractions - The biggest tourist attraction in Puer is tea! as you come into the city, you’ll see that the landscape is filled with rolling hills all filled with tea trees. when in puer, highly recommended to visit a tea plantation where you can learn, pick and make your own tea. Specifically the puer expo garden centre. on the second day we went to the horse road which is 10 mins away from city centre. before going into the ancient road entrance, you’ll pass by charma ancient town which is a cute town filled with trinkets you can buy. the horse road is a beautiful mountain where you can see a nice view of the city and learn about the tea trade routes people used to make.
