Shanxi Trip - Qiao Family Courtyard (Trip Moments) Pingyao Ancient City (See Pingyao Again).
Day 8 - Qiao Family Courtyard, Pingyao Ancient City
I went to Qiao Family Courtyard mainly for Trip Moments. I wanted to go to Pingyao Ancient City, but I thought it would be crowded, so I decided to go to Qiao Family Courtyard (I think I made the right decision). I found Zou Jin Trip Moments (the first one after the parking lot). The service was very good, and I tried on clothes until I was satisfied. The clothes were beautiful, and I really liked the outfit.
Then I went to Pingyao. I felt that Pingyao Ancient City was really ancient. This place has its own base for shooting, and you can wear clothes to the scenic area. When you get to the scenic area, you can take crazy photos in the back garden and the courtyard behind (there are fewer people here).
I felt that Qiao Family Courtyard was exquisite, but not as big as Wang Family Courtyard. Qiao Family Courtyard was crowded, and Wang Family Courtyard was more simple. Personally, I prefer Wang Family Courtyard.
After returning the clothes, I went to the parking lot to take a bus to Pingyao 18 (go to a vinegar shop, and they will ask the service center for you. The bus departs at a fixed time). I took the earliest train from Taiyuan to Qiao Family Courtyard. I left at 12:30 and took the train at 1:00. It took 40-50 minutes to get to Pingyao.
You must see See Pingyao Again in Pingyao. It is an immersive experience. It is said online that there are two versions, one in chronological order and one in reverse order. I watched the reverse order version (see the picture for reference on where to stand). The performance lasts for one and a half hours.
The attractions in Pingyao Ancient City are very small. I bought a through ticket to see the main attractions. You need a through ticket to go to the city wall (I still prefer Datong Ancient City). Pingyao Ancient City is crowded and small. Three brown sugar pancakes cost six yuan, and the kaolao is eaten with sauce and costs 26 yuan. They both taste good.
It takes more than 20 minutes to get from the ancient city (East Gate) to Pingyao Ancient City Station. I suggest walking fast like me. I booked See Pingyao Again at 4:00 because I was going back to Taiyuan that night.
This is the taste of an old restaurant! A great old restaurant for over a decade!
I came to this Shanxi restaurant again, which I have been eating for many years. This is definitely the TOP1 Shanxi restaurant in my heart👍, absolutely authentic and rich Jin flavor!
🔥[Assorted Hot Pot]🔥
I love 😍 this assorted hot pot the most. The ingredients are so rich that they are dazzling. The crispy meat inside is definitely my favorite💕, of course I also love💕🥘🌶️ the others. Now there is a courtyard hot pot festival, buy one get one free, absolutely worth it!!
🥩[Old Taiyuan Fried Meat]🥩
I ordered fried meat many times, each bite is full of meaty fragrance, slightly sour is just right, this taste is invincible🤤
🥜[Shouyang Dried Tofu]🥜 The dried tofu has a chewy texture and a full braised flavor. It is eaten with vegetables, refreshing and greasy, and is one of the representatives of Shanxi snacks! 🍢
🍗[Yuncheng Gourd]🍗
This dish is simply full of creativity! Yuncheng gourd, crispy skin, a bite down, full of surprises! 🥕
It has been full for so many years, which shows how delicious it is! And it doesn't cost much to have a big meal, and the cost performance is super high. Parking 🅿️ also has parking coupons. There is nothing to pick👍

It has a profound historical origin and is an architectural building with great practical significance and inheritance value. It is also an incomparable art treasure house
The design style of Qiao Family Compound is very unique, with a high artistic appreciation value. The origin of its architectural style is also closely related to the social status and regional customs at that time

Rare treasures in the courtyard→Wanren Ball: A mercury glass ball hanging on the ceiling, said to be purchased by Qiao's family from the United States. It will reduce the image of the people in the room where it is hung on the ball in a certain proportion. In those years, Qiao's family would hang it on the house to monitor the people in the room when they were entertaining guests and talking about business. It can be called the world's first surveillance probe. It was extremely rare at that time. Another prominent feature of Qiao Family Compound is that the courtyard walls are high and thick, but the windows are small. Moreover, the design of the wall and the top building is exquisite and ingenious, with a high appreciation value. It is a precious folk art treasure. The tour route of Qiao Family Compound↓

Qiao Family Courtyard
Qiao Family Courtyard in Qixian, Shanxi
In the morning, I visited the Qiao Family Courtyard. It is well-maintained, and the service is good. There are stamp activities and quite a few costume photography shops. The restaurants are also quite affordable. The Qiao Family's old brand offers knife-cut noodles for 10 yuan per bowl with unlimited refills, and the taste is pretty good. We happened to catch a tour group, so there were a lot of people, and the guides were all gone. Having a guide would have been better. We wandered around, had lunch, and spent about 4 hours there. The parking lot is quite convenient, with a fee of 10 yuan for a small car.
Reverse tourism to an old, authentic ancient city to relax
When mentioning Qixian in Jinzhong, most people think of the Qiao Family Courtyard. However, this treasure town has a deeper historical heritage beyond the Jin merchant culture.
Qixian Ancient City, also known as Zhaoyu Ancient City, derives its name from the Spring and Autumn period when Zhaoyuzi of the Jin State built a city here, hence the name Zhaoyu. The history of the ancient city can be traced back to the 7th century BC. It has undergone multiple dynastic changes, preserving a large number of historical relics and cultural heritage, making it a precious example of ancient Chinese urban planning and architectural art.
The existing ancient buildings in the city reflect the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The most famous building in the ancient city is the Qu Family Courtyard, built during the Qing Dynasty. It is a typical representative of Jin merchant culture. Although it is not as famous or large as the Qiao Family Courtyard, it was also a wealthy merchant's residence at that time.
The main commercial street retains the layout of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The shops and residences on both sides of the street have not undergone commercial development and still maintain their ancient charm.

The most underrated province, unexpectedly so beautiful, exists on the land of China
With so many tourism resources, yet not promoted
Really super underrated,
Only a few people can appreciate its beauty, it is Shanxi Province
Follow Lin Liang's route to see how beautiful Shanxi really is
.
1⃣Jinzhong·Qiao Family Courtyard
Known as the 'Folk Forbidden City', the rooms in the courtyard are connected, and compared to the Wang Family Courtyard, there are really fewer people, more suitable for a slow visit alone
2⃣Linfen·Xiaoxitian
Full of hanging sculptures, extreme enthusiasts will definitely fall in love with this place. Before entering the small hall, you might think it's just so-so, but once inside, it's hard to hold back your exclamations. Such people probably don't exist in the world
3⃣Datong·Huayan Temple
Every step in the temple is a scene, from statues to murals, all are exquisite. The internet-famous mural for photos was painted later, and the preserved murals are in the last main hall
4⃣Shuozhou·Yingxian Wooden Pagoda
About to exist for a thousand years, it's hard to imagine the wisdom of the ancients in a thousand-year-old wooden structure, known as one of the 'Three Great Pagodas of the World'. Come early, because due to a mistake in the Republic of China, it is slowly tilting
5⃣Shuozhou·Jingtu Temple
Came here for the caisson, it's really beautiful, the Nine-Eye Heavenly Palace, even the mortise and tenon joints of the heavenly palace are intricately carved
7⃣Datong·Yungang Grottoes
The predecessor of the Longmen Grottoes, a world heritage site built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, especially the sixth cave and the music cave are really shocking. If you don't visit the Yungang Grottoes, you really can't appreciate how beautiful stone carvings can be
8⃣Yuncheng·Yongle Palace
One of the four great murals, 'Chaoyuan Tu', is here. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed. The characters and objects on the mural are really lifelike
9⃣Pingyao·Shuanglin Temple
The master of sculpture, every sculpture's eyes are very vivid, like real, very intimidating
🔟Changzhi·Guanyin Hall
Like Xiaoxitian, the first glance really brings tears, too shocking
1⃣1⃣Taiyuan·Jinci
One of the earliest royal gardens, the only remaining ancient buildings should be the stone bridge and the Holy Mother Hall
1⃣2⃣Datong·Hanging Temple
About to gradually close, see it while you can, in the future, you can only watch from afar, and there are daily limits on climbing now

Travel Around Shanxi Series (14) - Qixian·Zhaoyu Ancient City
New things have their own advantages, and old things have their own beauty. Those bricks, houses, cups, and food boxes from ancient times that have fortunately been preserved to this day, and we are fortunate to still be able to see, feel, and appreciate them, exude a unique charm that stands the test of time. They are loved by you, them, and us who come here with admiration.
The Jin merchants, renowned worldwide for their business acumen, not only had unique business practices but also built distinctive Jin merchant courtyards and ancient cities, such as Wang Family Courtyard, Qiao Family Courtyard, and Pingyao Ancient City. Within the high-walled courtyards of gray bricks and tiles, there are exquisitely carved screen walls, winding alleys, and picturesque gardens... The ingenious craftsmanship will whet your appetite and then leave you pleasantly surprised and enlightened. This is the beauty of northern courtyards: subtle and silent, refreshing and unforgettable.
For example, the Zhaoyu Ancient City before us, which was first built during the Taihe period of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty, has a history of more than 1,500 years. It flourished during the Ming and Qing Dynasties due to the prosperity of tea merchants, forming a trend of "living in the countryside, setting up shops in Zhaoyu, and trading with the world." The Zhaoyu Ancient City is rectangular, with a missing corner in the southeast direction, resembling the gauze cap worn by ancient officials, hence the name "Gauze Cap City." The entire city layout centers around a crossroad, with four main streets running vertically and horizontally, south to north, and east to west, supplemented by twenty-eight streets and alleys crisscrossing the city.
Honors received:
In January 1994, it was approved by the State Council as a National Historical and Cultural City.
In 2011, "Qixian Jin Merchant Old Street" was rated as "China's Historical and Cultural Street."
In December 2015, the Chinese Commercial History Society awarded Qixian the title of "Capital of Tea Merchants on the Tea Road."
In March 2019, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage included the "Tea Road" in the "China World Cultural Heritage Tentative List." At the same time, 13 tea merchant sites in Qixian were also included in the "China World Cultural Heritage Tentative List."
Encounter the beautiful northern courtyards, savor the emotions brewed by time, and witness the brilliance of China through the vicissitudes of wind and snow.

The most famous attraction in Qixian is undoubtedly the Qiao Family Courtyard. It is an unparalleled art treasure worth seeing.

The Qiao Family Compound of the Jin Merchants, who were as wealthy as a nation
In the early Qing Dynasty, the economic status of central Shanxi rapidly rose, replacing southeastern Shanxi. Many Jin merchants depicted as immensely wealthy in various films and TV dramas originated from here. Upon arriving at the famous Qiao Family Compound in Qixian, you will find the courtyards built with grandeur and magnificence, exquisitely crafted. The gray walls and tiles of the buildings appear more imposing compared to those in the south, giving a heavy sense of oppression. When numerous large red lanterns are hung high, the style seems mismatched, but it softens the atmosphere. This place is extremely well-known, and the numerous tour groups greatly affect the experience.
Journey Through Shanxi Series (XII) - Qixian·Qu Family Mansion
The northern mansions are a microcosm of history, where the bygone days of 'eight thousand miles of clouds and moon' and drunken poetry are now but a whisper in the wind, eliciting sighs. Yet, time seems to have an inexhaustible fondness for these northern mansions, each appearance tinged with the earthy scent of soil, a hint of dampness, a touch of abruptness, a bit of the unconventional. They are full but not passionate, languid but not disrespectful. It's captivating every time it makes an entrance, enough to keep me fascinated for many years.
The Qu Family Mansion, which began construction during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, has undergone several renovations, with the main structures from the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty still standing. The Qu family once built 40 courtyards within Qixian city, and what remains today is only a part of the historical Qu family architecture, specifically the residences of Qu Yuanchao and Qu Yuangan.
As a castle-style complex, the Qu Family Mansion has a rich and cleverly arranged layout, with the Railing Courtyard, Bright Tower Courtyard, Unified Tower Courtyard, and Opera Stage Courtyard all intermingled in an orderly fashion. The rooftops are diverse, featuring hipped-and-gable roofs, suspended roofs, and more. Tall arched gateways are topped with exquisite watchtowers. Between the courtyards, there are archways and passageways, with the bright towers and unified towers creating a rich transitional spatial form. From above, the Qu Family Mansion resembles the character '明', with the 'moon' part on the right forming the five-section eastern courtyard, residential area, opera stage courtyard, and sedan chair courtyard, while the 'sun' part on the left comprises three quadrangle courtyards and a study courtyard along the western corridor.
The Qu Family Mansion is a masterpiece of Chinese residential architecture, and its brick carving art is representative of Shanxi and even Chinese brick carving, embodying the fusion and crystallization of spiritual and material culture, and is an outstanding cultural heritage.
The past's yesterday is history, the past's today is now, the past's tomorrow is the future. The Qu Family Mansion, a microcosm of the entire Jin merchant culture, has stood tall on Qixian's East Street through wind and rain for hundreds of years. The fleeting, the remaining, the lost and regained, all tell us about the past and present of this mansion in different ways. It represents the 'Jin'-style aesthetics of carved railings and jade walls, the deep legends of the courtyard, the enduring prosperity symbolized by the hanging red lanterns, and the remarkable achievements that connected the world.
Every brick and tile preserves the Jin merchant's residence.
Every courtyard and garden imprints the Jin merchant spirit.

The Qiao Family Courtyard in Shanxi, a mansion as rich as a nation
The Qiao Family Courtyard is the ancestral home of the legendary Jin merchant Qiao Zhiyong. It includes several areas such as the ancestral hall, the central hall, Courtyard No.1, Courtyard No.2, and Courtyard No.3, each with its unique architectural and sculptural art, showcasing the ancient cultural connotations of China. It is also the best place to study the architectural, art, and folk history of the Qing Dynasty. Throughout the Qiao Family Courtyard, all the wood carvings, stone carvings, and brick carvings are exquisitely crafted and worth savoring in detail.

Qiao Family Courtyard
Qiao Family Courtyard
🐷The Qiao Family Courtyard became famous from the popular TV series 'Qiao Family Courtyard', and it was then that people started to yearn for it. The courtyard consists of 'Dexing Hall', 'Ningshou Hall', 'Baoyuan Hall', 'Zaizhong Hall', and a garden, covering a total area of about 24,000 square meters. The largest existing part is the Zaizhong Hall, which is the courtyard where Qiao Zhiyong lived. Perhaps because the impression of 'Qiao Family Courtyard' is so profound, when touring the courtyard, in addition to admiring the exquisite carvings and decorations, the luxurious houses, the image of Qiao Zhiyong played by Chen Jianbin lingers in the mind.
🐽Now the horse caravans are no more, Chaktu is gone, and the once prosperity of the Qiao family is no longer. What remains is this solitary courtyard and the historical objects and photos in the exhibition hall that tell the world of its past.

Qiao Family Compound
#chinatrip This major tourist attraction between Pingyao and Taiyuan was featured in the movie Raise the Red Lantern and a Chinese TV series. It was the housing compound of the scholarly merchant Mr Qiao and his extended family. Now the state owns it and turned it into a tourist joint. The compound is very nice. You get a good glimpse of how the rich lived. There are exhibits featuring daily life of the 19th century. The place is very crowded and parts of it becomes very commercialized.
Wang's Grand Courtyard vs
Qiao's Grand Courtyard.
When you go to Shanxi, are you also struggling with whether to visit Wang's Grand Courtyard or Qiao's Grand Courtyard ? This time I visited both places and will compare them for you as a reference.
🌟Ticket Price🎫: Wang's Grand Courtyard is 55 yuan, Qiao's Grand Courtyard is 115 yuan
🌟Location: Wang's Grand Courtyard is located in Lingshi County, while Qiao's Grand Courtyard is in Qixian County. If you start from Pingyao, the distance to both places is similar. If you start from Taiyuan, Qiao's Grand Courtyard is much closer.
🌟Scale: Wang's Grand Courtyard (Pictures 1~6) was built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, covering an area of 250,000 square meters, with 231 courtyards, known as 'five alleys, six fortresses, and one street',
Qiao's Grand Courtyard (Pictures 7~9) was built during the Qing dynasty, covering more than 4,000 square meters, with 6 large courtyards and 20 small ones, constructed in the shape of the character '喜' (happiness).
🌟Characteristics: Wang's Grand Courtyard has an elegant and simple architectural style, reflecting the dignity of official and merchant families and the orderliness of household management. The wood, brick, and stone carvings are all exquisite. Many courtyards in its Hongmen Fortress are not yet open to the public, and the main attractions are concentrated in Gaojia Cliff, where you can climb the city wall for an overview.
Qiao's Grand Courtyard features exquisite architecture, with particularly distinctive brick carvings and colorful paintings, reflecting the concepts of business and household management, and is a typical representative of Qing dynasty residential architecture. The scenic area is equipped with facilities such as a sculpture corridor, which can help visitors understand the history of the Qiao family and their architecture in advance.
If you look at it from a cost-performance perspective, Wang's Grand Courtyard has the edge. It is recommended to choose one based on your itinerary and preferences, as the styles are quite similar.
