Did you know that the Huila region actually ranks first in coffee production in Colombia? Salento is popular with tourists thanks to its many coffee tours, but it's only about 10th in the country in terms of production. This time, I came to Garzon, the center of Huila, to visit a farm that isn't a tourist destination! Interesting Point 1 The annual village birthday celebration: horses everywhere! 🐴 Horses marched down the village's main street from one end to the other. Men and women of all ages, dressed as cowboys, rode around with tequila in hand, looking incredibly cool. Interesting Point 2 Despite the many coffee farms surrounding the area, there was only one specialty coffee shop. It seemed like there weren't any tourists there just for the coffee. However, the quality of this cafe was incredibly high. Prices were low to accommodate the locals, but the quality was exceptional. It's run by a Colombian barista champion, so I was impressed. Interesting Point 3 Cows and horses on an unfenced road 🐴🐮 I knew I couldn't reach my destination without passing through here, so I risked my life to slip through them. It was truly scary 😭 That's all about Garzon. It's a little out of the way, but I recommend it for those who want to experience a local atmosphere that you can't get in a big city. 🚌Garzon is about 8 hours from Salento via Neiva. Meet Lake Guatavita 🥰 You've probably heard of the mythical city of El Dorado and its many treasures. Well, the legend of El Dorado originated right here, on Lake Guatavita! Let me start by saying that this territory was once inhabited by the Muisca, one of the most highly developed civilizations in South America. The name Guatavita, meaning "beginning of the mountain range," comes from the Muisca language. The Muisca considered this lake sacred and symbolized the feminine principle, the mother of all life, the keeper of balance, and the protector of the territory. The Muisca had an interesting ceremony for the inauguration of a new chief. The person destined for the title would undress, be completely covered in a sticky substance, and then, using tubes, several assistants would cover their body with golden sand. Like a dazzling golden deity, he stood motionless on the raft while his subjects piled gold and jewels at his feet as offerings to the gods. Then, several more nobles joined the "golden man," and the raft floated away on the waters of the sacred lake. When the raft reached the middle, the future leader and his entourage threw the precious gifts into the water, then jumped in and swam to shore. The Spaniards, who first came to South America in the 16th century, were simply astonished by the stories of this ceremony! With each retelling, the truth became increasingly embellished and adorned with ever more incredible details. The very existence of a people so rich that they covered themselves in gold seemed like something out of a fairy tale to Europeans. Driven by a thirst for profit, the Spanish conquistadors soon distorted the original story so completely that "El Hombre Dorado" ("The Golden Man") became simply "El Dorado," a valley strewn with gold, lying somewhere beyond an impassable mountain range or river. Since then, countless attempts have been made to extract the untold riches from the bottom of Lake Guatavita. But, oddly enough, for various reasons, they have all failed! And in 1965, to stop further attempts to barbarically drain the lake or damage its ecosystem, the Colombian government declared Lake Guatavita a national treasure and banned all treasure hunting in the area. Thus, the legend of El Dorado has inspired numerous works of literature, music, and cinema, but in real life, the treasure has never been discovered. So, after a relatively easy hike up the mountain from the town of Sesquile (the lake is located in the crater of an extinct volcano), we arrived at Lake Guatavita. Ironically, we arrived on a day when the access to the lake was closed, but that didn't stop us from sneaking in illegally, through fields and forests. The Gold Museum in Bogotá is the most visited museum in the Colombian capital! Surprisingly, admission is quite affordable—5,000 pesos (just over 100 rubles), but the size and contents of the museum are impressive! The Gold Museum houses one of the most important and extensive collections of gold and other pre-Columbian metal objects in the world! The Gold Museum in Bogotá was founded in 1939 by the Bank of the Republic of Colombia with the goal of preserving, researching, and promoting the country's archaeological heritage. Since then, the collection has continually expanded through purchases, donations, and archaeological excavations. Currently, the museum houses approximately 55,000 exhibits, 6,000 of which are on permanent display. The museum's collection is divided into several halls, each dedicated to a specific culture or theme. I'm sharing with you photographs of some of the exhibits I liked. However, photographs don't begin to capture the full splendor of the museum. Seeing it in person feels like you're transported back centuries and touching history, especially if you read all the information next to the exhibits. In addition to all the other beauty, there's also the "Muisca Raft," also known as the "Raft of El Dorado." This raft depicts the coronation ceremony of a Muisca chieftain, which took place on Lake Guatavita. And it was in Lake Guatavita that it was found! #Bogota #Colombia #Museums

Misiguay Waterfall isn't exactly popular, and we definitely wouldn't have gone there if it weren't for our host... Diego, our host in Bucaramanga, invited us to join him and his friends! His girlfriend had a birthday that day, and they were planning to spend some time outdoors and barbecue. I thought it was a really sweet gesture! Of course, we agreed. The waterfall itself... Nothing special, but beautiful, how could it be otherwise? Beautiful and cold! The water in the waterfall was truly icy; at first, I didn't even plan to swim, especially when the sky was overcast. But soon the sun came out again, and then I climbed in—how could I not take a photo in such beauty? It was all for the content. We swam, ate our fill of chicken barbecue, and were tired... There's a fascinating landmark near Bucaramanga – a huge statue of Jesus, 40 meters tall, even taller than its counterpart in Rio de Janeiro! Of course, we couldn't resist going there. It's located in the Floridablanca neighborhood. A cable car (teleferico) leads to the statue. Incidentally, I can't help but note that Colombia has a plethora of cable cars; they exist even in small towns and often serve as public transportation, replacing the metro. This is certainly convenient, as many cities are located in the mountains. We didn't climb to the very top of the statue; that's an additional fee. We were content to take photos of the views from the park – they really are beautiful. Besides, the weather was already turning bad, and it was starting to rain, so we could leave with peace of mind. #Colombia #Bucaramanga
