Hidden within Yilong Lake is a "floating flower field"—you'll be captivated the moment you paddle a boat into it.
Yilong Lake: A Hidden "Sea of Lotus Flowers" in Yunnan, Where Fishing Village Oars Shatter Summer
Upon reaching the lakeshore, you're immediately enveloped by the fragrance of lotus blossoms carried on the breeze. An old man, wearing a straw hat, plunges his bamboo pole into the water, and with a creak, the wooden boat glides into the green sea—in June, Yilong Lake is a carpet of lotus flowers, their pink and white petals peeking out from the green leaves like scattered stars.
🌸 "White Lotus Flowers" Bloom Underwater
"Don't just look at the lotus flowers; there are treasures underwater." The old man uses his oar to part the lotus leaves, and immediately, tiny white flowers float to the surface, their petals as thin as cicada wings, their hearts hiding tender yellow stamens. "These are water hyacinths. They can't survive in dirty water. The water in Yilong Lake is so clean you can drink it directly."
Where the boat passes, the water hyacinths sway, like a flock of white butterflies chasing the boat. The flowers in a certain area of water were particularly abundant. The old man said it was a "gathering of flower goddesses," explaining that "fishermen used to come here before heading out to sea, picking a flower to wear, praying for a bountiful catch." Reaching out to pluck a flower, the cool lake water on your fingertips felt refreshing; bringing it close, you could smell the sweet scent of aquatic plants.
🛶 The smoke from the fishing village was even more fragrant than the lotus blossoms.
In Mafang Village, in the center of the lake, the houses seemed to float on the water. An old woman squatted at the dock, gutting fish; silvery crucian carp jumped in her bamboo basket. "Just caught from the lake, wrapped in lotus leaves and steamed. No need for MSG, it's so fresh it'll make your eyebrows fall off."
At midday in the fishing village, smoke from the chimneys drifted slowly, mingling with the fragrance of lotus leaves. On the old woman's wooden table, lake fish, water chestnuts, and lotus leaf porridge were piled high. "We don't scale the fish; the scales melt into oil when steaming, making it very moist." One bite of the fish, and the fresh juices burst in your mouth, paired with crunchy water chestnuts, filling your mouth with the taste of lake water.
Under an old banyan tree on the shore, several fishermen are mending their nets, a patch of water lily still tangled in the mesh. "This net has been used for ten years," the old man says with a smile. "The fish in Yilong Lake are docile; they won't break the net, just like this lake, so gentle."
🌅 The sunset paints the lake surface the color of lotus blossoms.
The lake at dusk is like a spilled rouge box. The setting sun dyes the lotus blossoms pinkish-gold, the water lily petals edged with gold, the fishermen's returning boats leave red streaks on the water, and startled water birds skim by, their wings stirring up shimmering droplets of water.
The old man says the most beautiful sight is "flowers reflected in golden waves," "When the sun is about to set, the shadows of the lotus blossoms in the lake overlap with the shadows of the clouds in the sky, making it impossible to distinguish between flowers and clouds." Sure enough, the distant water surface looked like a brocade, pink, gold, and white hues mixed together, even the air seemed sweet.
Practical Guide
· Transportation: 20-minute drive from Shiping County (take Yilonghu South Road, there are viewing platforms along the way where you can stop for photos); take bus No. 3 from the county to Yilonghu Scenic Area, then walk 5 minutes to the pier, the journey takes 30 minutes, the fare is 2 yuan, the last bus is at 18:30.
· Best Time: July (lotus flowers are in full bloom, water hyacinths are also in full bloom, and water chestnuts in the fishing villages are just ripe); November (migratory birds arrive, flocks of red-billed gulls grace the lake, creating a picturesque scene with the withered lotus flowers), avoid April (strong winds, large ripples on the lake, making lotus flower photos blurry).
· Must-Bring: Straw hat (strong UV rays at the lake, straw hats can also be used as photo props); light jacket (it can get chilly in the evening); empty bottle (fill it with lake water to take home, it's even more refreshing than mineral water). - Hidden Fun: Learn from the old man how to "distinguish fish sounds" (a crucian carp jumps with a "splash," a carp jumps with a "plop," you can tell if it's time to cast your net by the sound); find the old carpenter in Mafang Village and watch him make fishing floats from lotus leaf stems (good buoyancy, fragrant, and the fish are less wary).
As I left, the old woman gave me a bag of dried water lilies, saying, "Soak them in water, it'll clear heat." Driving far away, looking back, Yilong Lake still looked like a piece of jade embedded in the mountains, lotus flowers swaying in the wind, smoke still drifting from the fishing village—it turns out that Yunnan's lakes aren't just the bustling Erhai Lake, but also gentle like Yilong Lake, quietly brewing summer into something sweet.
