during my recent trip to Crete, I decided to visit Kalyves, a small seaside town 20 to 30 minutes away from Chania. there's a great beach with gently sloping sand into the sea, with plenty of sunbeds to hire if you wish. or you can just lay it on the beach on your towel. there's a nice carefree atmosphere about the place. there's plenty of bars and restaurants and small local tavernas to choose from. there's a great bus service along the West coast and also going east to Rethymnon. there's a great freshwater lake to visit, lake kornas, where you can take a swim in the cool fresh water, hire a boat or pedalo. there's some great sightseeing and exploring to be done in the small amount of villages.
