#slowtraveling Cilaos is a 2h drive from Saint-Pierre on the RN5—21 km of switchbacks called “400 turns,” car rental 45 EUR/day from Gillès (card ok), or bus 2.50 EUR from Saint-Pierre (cash only). I stayed two nights at a gîte (55 EUR B&B, card ok). The palm forest (palmiste rouge) starts 3 km out of town on the Sentier des Anglais—moss on every trunk, waterfalls crossing the path. I hiked the 6 km to the Bras de Cilaos pool, swam (cold!), then back via the ridge. No permit, free. A Creole lunch at Chez Noé was 14 EUR for carry and rougail. Mistake: I drove the RN5 at dusk—fog + no guardrails + 400 turns = white knuckles. Drive it by day. Kindness: a farmer gave me a palm heart salad sample, “le cirque est une main, les doigts sont les sentiers” (the cirque is a hand, the fingers are the trails). Is a mountain road with 400 turns a connection, or a test?

Excellent stay with a warm reception upon arrival. The wonderful Jennifer Lopez kindly welcomed us, and the servers were very friendly. The evenings were fantastic. Thank you, Corail Azur, Mrs. Robert, and Mr. Toplan!

#easytravelpost The Tamarin ridge is the Cilaos-side approach to Piton des Neiges (3,070 m, highest in the Indian Ocean arc); from the Col du Taïbit fork the slope runs through tamarin (Acacia heterophylla)–podocarp cloud forest** where trade-wind cloud dumps daily — Papillaria on the tamarin bark 1 cm, Neckeropsis on the tree-fern stipe 1 cm, Sphagnum in the basalt seep 3 cm, 9°C at 1,800 m in July dawn, the Réunion cuckooshrike, the Mafate rempart wall east. Réunion NP is free, no gate, Cilaos→Col du Taïbit bus (Alternéo 60) or car to the trailhead, gîte Caverne Dufour overnight 52 € half-board cash. I slept in Cilaos (gîte 48 €), taxi to the Col du Taïbit roadend 05:30 (25 €), climbed the Tamarin ridge to Caverne Dufour (3 hrs), summited for 06:40 sunrise. The moss on the 1930s telegraph post was black-green with rime, ate a 6 € boulangerie pain+chouchou, watched cloud pour off the Salazie wall by 07:30 — 10 min of summit clarity then soup. Mistake: I did the ridge in Feb afternoon — cloud-zero at 1,500 m, slipped on the basalt slab, hypothermia-ish at 2,500 m; May–Oct, 05:00 start, 2 L + wind shell, the Tamarin band is 1,400–2,200 m not the top. Another: gîtes take cash only, Cilaos ATM eats foreign cards sometimes. Would you bus+Cilaos gîte for the Col du Taïbit→Tamarin ridge mossy cloud-forest sunrise push, or skip the summit and do the easier Maïdo→Marla Mafate descent instead?

#easytravelpost Mafate is one of three cirques of Piton des Neiges, no roads, no cars — in on foot or helicopter only. Main approaches: Maïdo (2,200 m) down 1,500 m to Marla, or Rivière des Galets 4×4 track to the trailhead. I slept in Saint-Paul, took the 06:00 bus to the Maïdo car park (free), started down at 07:10. No park entry fee (it's Réunion NP, free), but the Rivière des Galets 4×4 shuttle is 32 EUR/person if you approach that side. The Maïdo→Cayenne islet descent runs through tamarin forest then into the cirque: volcanic amphitheatre walls 1,000 m high, moss on the basalt buttresses 3 cm thick where the trade-wind cloud pours in, 16°C at 09:00, a Réunion cuckooshrike calling. The islets (Marla, La Nouvelle, Roche Plate) are Creole hamlets — I reached Cayenne at 11:30, ate a 15 EUR menu (rice+chicken+rougail) at the gîte, the moss on the gîte's corrugated wall silver with cloud dew. Sleep in the gîte (25–35 EUR dorm) or turn back — same-day return to Maïdo is 8 hrs brutal. Mistake: I carried 1.5 L water — needed 3 L; the cirque has streams but treat them. Another: Maïdo car park fills by 07:30 on weekends; arrive 06:00. Would you hike Maïdo→Cayenne 5 hrs down for Mafate's mossy volcanic bowl + 15 EUR gîte lunch, or do the easier Salazie cirque road-accessible instead?

Stepping into Cilaos feels like arriving in a breathtaking sanctuary cradled inside a colossal volcanic crater high above the Indian Ocean. Tucked away in the dramatic mountainous interior of Réunion Island, this legendary mountain village is surrounded by sheer, mist-shrouded basalt walls and jagged peaks that pierce the tropical sky. Driving up the famous road of the 400 bends and watching the clouds roll over the deep green ravines was an utterly thrilling and soul-stirring introduction to the heart of the island. 🚙🌿 . 📅 What I experienced · Hiking the La Roche Merveilleuse: Trekking up through the fragrant pine forests to reach this stunning natural viewpoint perched directly above the village, offering a sweeping panoramic perspective of the entire basin and its surrounding towering ramparts. · Exploring the Thermal Village: Wandering through the charming, Creole-style streets lined with colorful wooden cottages, vibrant flower gardens, and local artisan shops specializing in traditional hand-woven drawn-thread embroidery (*broderie de Cilaos*). · Tasting Local Lentils: Discovering the unique agricultural heritage of the valley by visiting local plots where the famous, highly prized Cilaos lentils are grown in rich volcanic soil. . 🏨 Where I stayed · I stayed in a cozy, traditional Creole guesthouse featuring a wooden veranda with a direct view of the towering Piton des Neiges. Waking up to the crisp mountain air and watching the morning sun illuminate the massive cliff walls was absolute serenity. 🛏️☕ . 🍴 My culinary highlights · Réunionese mountain cuisine is a rich fusion of French, African, and Asian influences. I savored a steaming pot of traditional chicken *cari* cooked over a wood fire with turmeric and tomatoes, served alongside lentils, rice, and a fiery *rougail* tomato condiment, paired with a glass of local Cilaos wine. 🍛🍷 . 📌 My tips for visiting · Drive Carefully on the Mountain Road: The main road leading into the cirque (Route de Cilaos) features hundreds of sharp hairpin turns and narrow tunnels carved into the rock, so take your time and watch out for oncoming buses. · Start Mountain Hikes at Dawn: Cilaos is the ultimate base for climbing the Piton des Neiges (the highest peak on the island), and starting your trek at sunrise ensures clear skies before the afternoon clouds roll in. · Bring Layers for Cooler Airs: Because Cilaos sits high in a mountain microclimate, temperatures drop significantly compared to the tropical coast, so always pack a warm jacket and rain shell. 📸🎒 . #Cilaos #LaReunion #ReunionIsland #VisitReunion #TravelDeep #VolcanicCirque #IndianOcean #BucketList #ExploreReunion #TravelDiaries

Images 1–5, Le Souffleur natural blowhole, the entire coast is covered with black volcanic lava. Millions of years of wave erosion have created underground caves. At high tide, large waves surge into the rock crevices, and high-pressure seawater shoots skyward. White mist sprays several meters high. Sunlight passing through the mist sometimes reveals a small suspended rainbow, both stunning and soothing. The reef terrain is uneven, made up of porous, sharp basalt. Walk slowly and carefully. The best time to watch is a windy afternoon at high tide, when the waves spray with the greatest force, creating a powerful visual impact. Images 6–10, Plage de Saint-Leu black sand beach Just a few hundred meters from the blowhole, this is a completely different gentle coastline. Volcanic ash has settled into fine gray-black sand. Tall coconut trees line the shore, and the lawn is wide and flat, making it a popular local leisure spot. At the end of the beach is a trendy graffiti-covered small red lighthouse, whose colors add an artistic island vibe. Near the shore is a gently layered lava intertidal zone. At low tide, shallow pools form, perfect for wading and capturing sea views. Surfers often appear in the distance, adding depth to the seascape. The lawn area is great for picnics and walks, with plenty of shade. After visiting the blowhole, this is a perfect place to rest, balancing activity and scenery perfectly. Images 11–14, Gouffre de l'Étang-Salé (salt pond abyss/lava fissure blowhole), basalt lava from the Furnas volcano eruption tens of thousands of years ago has been eroded by Indian Ocean waves over time, tearing a narrow, deep lava fissure.

Step onto the dangerous cape to truly understand the rugged wildness unique to Reunion’s volcanic island. The entire coastline is built from billions of years of cooled black volcanic lava. Steep cliffs plunge into the sea, with cracks running through the rock walls and sharp reefs scattered along the shore. The Indian Ocean’s fierce winds rage here year-round, with massive waves crashing violently against the cliffs, sending up snow-white spray several meters high. The roaring sound fills the entire bay, and the overwhelming pressure is exactly why it’s called “dangerous.” The natural lava arch is a signature feature here. Waves surge and rush through the archway, while visitors on the cliff-top trail appear tiny like silhouettes. The massive rock walls and the churning sea create a striking visual contrast.

Photos 1–5, Cirque de Salazie, the island’s most lush valley in terms of vegetation. Millions of years of volcanic activity have carved jagged, steep cliffs covered in layers of tropical greenery. Banana groves and bamboo forests blanket the hillsides. Mist often wraps around the peaks, creating a naturally cool and healing wilderness atmosphere. Photo 6, Voile de la Mariée waterfall A thin curtain of water cascades down the cliff, the mist resembling a bride’s veil. The valley’s moisture feels cool and refreshing. Photos 7–9, Église de l'Assomption A pure white French church hidden among the villages in the Salazie valley. Its red-tiled spire contrasts with the lush green volcanic forest, blending French religious architecture with tropical volcanic landscapes in a fascinating way. Photo 12, Salazie town hall

Réunion, located in the southwestern Indian Ocean, is a volcanic island and one of France's overseas departments. The island is made up of two main volcanoes: Piton des Neiges (a dormant volcano), standing at 3,069 meters, the highest peak in the Indian Ocean; and Piton de la Fournaise (an active volcano), which still erupts frequently, with lava flowing into the sea to form new land. The island's three major cirques (Cilaos, Salazie, Mafate) are canyons formed by volcanic collapse, featuring dense forests and numerous waterfalls. Having experienced colonization and a blend of diverse cultures, Réunion, nestled between mountains and sea, has become a romantic place full of French charm.

Initially, the Peak and Peak were separate, each erupting in solitude. As they continued to erupt, the flowing lava connected them, and they have never separated since. The last eruption of Neiges Peak was 60,000 years ago, and it is now dormant, while the Fournaise volcano remains active. · Although Réunion is the backyard of the French, the relatively high altitude makes the summer in the de Salazie cooler, and many French people come here from the seaside, treating the cirque as a summer resort. · The small town of is at the bottom of the cirque, picturesque.
