Tip 1: The Great Ocean Road is a long journey, but it's definitely worth it and incredibly spectacular. We took the reverse route, so we didn't see many wild kangaroos 🦘. Remember to sit on the right side on the return trip. The loop around the ocean is beautiful, and the town of Lorne, which we passed through, is so charming; I highly recommend stopping there if you're driving. For the Little Red Riding Hood Lighthouse, I highly recommend walking along the lower beach; the sea there is truly magnificent, with huge waves. Tip 2: If you don't want to take the miniature train, you can share a ride to the Koala Sanctuary + Churchill Farm + Cowes Town + Nobbs Point + Penguin Parade (the wildlife park was closed). The Koala Sanctuary is small, with only a dozen or so koalas and very few other animals. The farm is truly beautiful, with cow milking, sheep shearing, and sheepdog shows; overall it's quite nice, but don't have too high expectations, mainly because it's a coastal farm. Cowes Town is just for eating; it's optional. Nobbs Point is beautiful, with many wild penguin nests and kangaroos, but the kangaroos here are a smaller breed, not the muscular kind. You can see the baby penguins directly inside the penguin nests. The Penguin Parade is highly recommended; VIP tickets offer a closer view, taking you along the right-hand boardwalk to get very, very close to the penguins. Tip 3: Don't go to Queen Victoria Market, go to South Melbourne Market instead (pay attention to opening hours to avoid wasting your time). You absolutely must try the pandan buns and chocolate buns from Agathe; the lobster and oysters from Aptus; and have some coffee from Code Black. Just follow the crowd and you're unlikely to be disappointed. Go to all of this; it's full of locals, a truly authentic local market. Tips 4: After visiting Sydney, you might be a bit tired of the parks and architecture in Melbourne, but you absolutely must visit the library. The train station benches that Jay Chou wore are across the street, on the left in front of the church. Carlton Gardens is also quite nice. Tips 5: Remember to try the all-you-can-eat BBQ; you can eat as much Australian beef as you want for around AU50 per person. You must try the Vietnamese pho; the ingredients make it tastier than in Vietnam. I personally love GIPPSLAND yogurt; the gelato pistachio ice cream is terrible, super sweet and just average. Rokeby milk is good; the chocolate one is great, but the strawberry one is awful. Tips 6: Take bus 96 for three stops from South Melbourne Market; there's a great shopping area next to it called DFO, where UGG and CK are very cheap. Ralph Lauren's selection is limited; you'll need to visit their downtown stores. Tip 7: Tax refunds are generally only available for purchases over 300 from the same store. Remember to download the TRS app and fill out the information beforehand. At the airport, before security, go to the arrivals area to get your passport stamped. The staff there don't check the items and stamps it quickly. Then check in and drop off your luggage. After security, queue for your tax refund. Remember to check your honey in; you cannot bring it on the plane. If you discover you can't bring your honey on the plane after check-in, you'll need to find check-in staff to bring your luggage back up and re-check it.
