Rostock is a city straddling the Warnow River on the north coast of Germany. It’s known for Rostock University, founded in 1419. Rostock Botanical Garden has an arboretum and alpine gardens. In the old town, the Gothic St. Mary’s Church features a 15th-century astronomical clock. Nearby is the cobblestone Neuer Markt main square and Rathaus (town hall), which mixes Gothic and baroque styles. A Hanseatic trading city, Rostock was granted city rights in the 13th century and since then has been a nexus point for trade, learning and shipbuilding on the Baltic.

Long coastel forest healthy walks in Warnemuende
Sea-Air is healthy, Forest-Air too: In Warnemünde and surroundings you get both! (happy hour ;-)) In Germanys North-East region the forest stretches along the sea with wonderful landscapes. Google for "Rostocker Heide" and you'll find Germany biggest coastel forest on the eastern side of Warnemünde. More steep coast and small Seaside resorts on the western side - including the first Seaside resort of Germany: Heiligendamm!

A lovely day at the zoo 🇩🇪
#summerdestinations
Spending a day at Rostock Zoo was one of the highlights of my trip! 🦒 Nestled in the charming city of Rostock, this zoo is not just for kids—it’s an experience for everyone. The entrance fee was around €18 for adults, which felt totally worth it considering the variety of animals and exhibits. The zoo is home to over 4,200 animals, including polar bears, elephants, and the adorable red pandas 🐼. The Darwineum is a must-visit, where you can explore fascinating exhibits about evolution and even see gorillas up close!
One of the things I loved most was the spacious enclosures that felt natural and gave the animals plenty of room to roam. The zoo is beautifully landscaped with lots of greenery, making it a relaxing place to walk around. I spent hours just wandering and taking in the different sights. 🐘 There are plenty of rest spots and cafes to grab a coffee or a quick bite, and the play areas are perfect for families with young kids.
After the zoo, I took a short drive to Warnemünde Beach to catch the sunset 🌅. If you have time, the Rostock city center is nearby too, with its historic architecture and quaint shops. Overall, my day at Rostock Zoo was both fun and educational. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

This summer, I visited the Shipbuilding and Maritime Museum in Rostock, Germany, and it was a fascinating experience! 🚢⚓️ Located in the Rostock harbor, the museum is housed in the historic MS Dresden, an old freight ship that now serves as a floating exhibition space. The entrance fee is around €6, which is very reasonable for the wealth of history and knowledge on display.
Exploring the museum, I was captivated by the extensive exhibits detailing the history of shipbuilding and maritime trade in the region. Walking through the various decks, I learned about the evolution of shipbuilding techniques, maritime navigation, and life at sea. The engine room and bridge were especially intriguing, giving a real sense of what it was like to work on such a vessel.
Nearby, the city of Rostock offers plenty of other attractions, including the beautiful Rostock Zoo and the charming old town with its historic architecture and vibrant cafes. Just a short drive away is Warnemünde, with its stunning beaches and picturesque lighthouse. It’s well worth the price for such a unique and educational experience.
Watching the polar bears swim and play in their spacious, carefully designed enclosure was both thrilling and heartwarming. The zoo provides a fantastic view of these majestic animals, and there are plenty of informative displays about their habitat and conservation efforts. The keepers were very knowledgeable and gave insightful talks about the polar bears’ lives and the challenges they face in the wild.

Nearby, the Rostock city center is perfect for a stroll with its historic buildings and lively atmosphere. A trip to the seaside town of Warnemünde is also a must for its stunning beaches. What’s special ✨: a seaside city north of Germany with many restaurants with terraces - perfect for a long lunch and dinner outdoor during the winter.
The centre is vibrant but also tranquil at the same time. One feels very relaxed when walking around and sitting down here.
