As a free-spirited Jiangsu native, one of the province's thirteen most competitive culinary spheres is already incredibly diverse. Yet, last year I dedicated all my travel planning energy to Yunnan, a thousand miles away. From Kunming to Dali, Baoshan, Tengchong to Mangshi and Ruili, Pu'er to Xishuangbanna, I meticulously planned every city's food and travel itinerary, wholeheartedly exploring every aspect of eating, drinking, and entertainment. I even fell in love with local delicacies like roasted milk fan and vinegared rice noodles. More than half of my gatherings with friends and family were at Yunnan-style restaurants, a truly delightful experience. This spring, the Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts partnered with Hong0871 to select Yunnan cuisine, with the first stop at the Shang Palace Chinese Restaurant in Yangzhou. This meal perfectly exemplified what soft power truly means. The pre-meal appetizer, the "Butter Double-Petal Rose Flower Pastry," was simply divine from the first bite. The pastry was moist and fluffy, the petals thick and fragrant, completely overturning all my preconceived notions of Yunnan flower pastries. I immediately captured the joy the people of Yunnan experience when enjoying flowers. The first two appetizers were both ingeniously presented. The Nuodeng ham and milk fan stir-fried with Dali sunflower petals, after being mixed, offered layers of flavor with macadamia nut sauce, ham, milk fan, and sunflower petals. The perilla flower and sea urchin crystal pork jelly broke with convention, combining Yunnan sweet bamboo shoots, snow crab meat, sea urchin, and vinegar grains in one dish, enhancing both its appearance and flavor. The arrival of the warm soup created the first climax. The three-year-old lily bulb and geoduck soup was prepared on the spot with hot broth, with the chef urging us to "stop taking pictures and drink it while it's hot!" The geoduck flower truly lived up to its reputation as a top-quality wild vegetable, sweet and nourishing. Following this, a series of hot wok-fried dishes arrived: ginger flower and ginger oil-braised pigeon, yellow fish maw and braised pork belly, herb-wrapped roasted squid with bamboo charcoal, daylily and hibiscus pomfret, and dogtooth bream and toon spring rolls. While the Yangtze River Delta region is brimming with spring delicacies in March and April, immersed in lush greenery, Shangri-La takes a different approach, allowing us, with our insatiable appetites, to savor Yunnan's fresh flowers and divine cooking methods without traveling far. There's a term circulating online now: "Spiritual Yunnanese." When everyone is crowding into the city center, choosing to stay on the periphery allows for a sense of vastness and openness. Ruili is the farthest point of this self-driving tour, marking the start of the return journey. The next stop is Yingjiang County, first reaching Longchuan, separated from Ruili by just one mountain. Navigation to Longchuan Manao Zongge Square takes about forty minutes. The square itself is not very special; it only becomes lively during the Manao Zongge Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. However, I did see a household-style roasted pig shop, where a whole pig weighing dozens of pounds was roasted on a stove—jaw-dropping and very bold. Continuing along National Highway 556 towards Husa Achang Ethnic Township, you need to travel more than twenty kilometers to cross the Longchuan basin, the largest basin in Longchuan. Another basin is in Husa Achang Ethnic Township, which is the main agricultural area of Longchuan. After climbing the mountain, you pass two rest areas. One is the Yunnan Western Five Counties Reclamation and Border Defense Memorial Park, a bit of a mouthful 😀, commemorating the special era of the educated youth’s mountain and countryside movement. Wang Xiaobo was assigned here, and his books contain many memories of Yunnan and the life of educated youth. There is also a Husa Lai Clan Knife Museum here, but it was locked and unattended. The other rest area is after passing through the Husa Tunnel, where there is a Husa knife shop and a statue of Mu Ying. From the viewing platform, you can see the Husa Achang Ethnic Township basin. Further downhill, you leave National Highway 556 and turn right onto County Road N54 to reach Husa Achang Ethnic Township. Navigation to Jiakong Temple is just a few kilometers away. The temple is small and located in Jiakong Village. It is an ancient Theravada Buddhist temple and a Yunnan provincial cultural heritage site. This temple, also called Zangfang, features Achang ethnic architectural characteristics. I heard there are monks managing the temple, but when we visited, we only saw a few carpenters doing repairs. From Jiakong Temple to Husa Huangge Temple, take County Road 276 for more than ten kilometers, about twenty minutes. The scenery along the way is nice, passing several villages and temples, as well as Mengsuo Ancient City, an undeveloped tourist project. On the way, we also saw a monument for the "Husa Dongmo Battle Site," commemorating the Yunnan military and civilians’ resistance against Japanese invaders during the War of Resistance. Husa Huangge Temple was built during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty by Mu Ying for the stationed troops. The temple is built on a mountain and currently has two courtyards: the upper courtyard, Huangge Temple, dedicated to the Jade Emperor and Taoism; and the lower courtyard, Bao’en Temple, dedicated to Buddhism. Therefore, the full name of the temple is Husa Huangge Bao’en Temple. After finishing the visit to Husa Achang Ethnic Township, we took the highway to Yingjiang County for accommodation. Yingjiang Wetland Park was surprisingly beautiful. I initially planned to take a few photos by the river and leave, but ended up spending more than an hour there. Although the Dayingjiang Rubber Dam Beach marked on the map is somewhat misleading, the morning mountain and wetland scenery is very beautiful, prompting me to enter the park again for a closer look. The park has large flower beds blending with the wetland river, and there is a viewing pavilion, which I’ll call Wangjiang Pavilion. The view from the pavilion is even more beautiful. Below the pavilion, peacocks and chickens roam freely, fighting either for food or territory. There is a boardwalk on the wetland leading to the riverbank, where many wild ducks, white egrets, and other water birds can be seen among the reeds and by the river. We also saw a pair of large birds flying overhead, possibly white storks or cranes. There were few visitors, and the air was exceptionally fresh—this is the harmony between humans and nature that many people yearn for. Ruili at night seems livelier than Mangshi, with many foreigners seen on the streets. The hotel receptionist said that Monong Lake Park is very lively at night, but when I went to White Elephant Square, there were only some people dancing plaza dances. The lake surface was dark, and more people were jogging around the lake. I found on the map a place called Ruili River Square, next to which is the Mengmao Ancient Town. Driving over, Mengmao Ancient Town is still an unfinished project, but Ruili River Square is quite lively. Around a burning bonfire, people dressed in Dai ethnic costumes formed long lines, dancing in circles to music. The men wore Dai short knives as props and moved in unison, while the women carried Dai shoulder bags and colorful folding fans, swaying and twisting. I’m not sure if it was a special event or if this happens every day, but it felt like a festive atmosphere. There is also a Tree-Wrapped Temple in the square, a small house with a shrine embraced by a large banyan tree. Along the riverside road, there are many bars with live band performances. From here, you can see Myanmar across the river, where the lights are dim and quiet. On the other side of the square, the night market stalls are large in scale but have few diners, possibly due to the lower temperature. Early the next morning, I went to Ruili Grand Buddha Temple, located not far east of the city and just south of the Ruili River. From here, you can see Myanmar on the southern bank of the river. Some say you can see an electric fraud park, but I don’t know if that’s true. In the morning mist, the connected buildings are low and it’s hard to tell their purpose. The Grand Buddha Temple is combined with a Buddhist academy and is very large. On the hilltop to the east is a Dai King’s Palace, an abandoned tourism project. The exterior is magnificent and golden, but the interior is empty—still a great spot for photos. Below the eastern slope of the palace is a large golden pagoda, surrounded by golden statues of the twelve zodiac animals, which is also very beautiful. The pagoda’s interior is vast and has become a paradise for swallows. Jiedaokou Port is located in a triangular area on the south bank of the Ruili River, possibly the only piece of territory crossing the river. I came here for a quick visit during a self-driving trip in 2018, and the management back then didn’t seem as strict as it is now. Now there are more people, parking is tighter, but the experience of visiting is more relaxed and shopping feels safer (market management is very strict, and the risk of counterfeit goods is high). On the western outskirts of Ruili city is the Jiedonglai Banyan King, an 800-year-old giant banyan tree. It’s Asia’s Banyan King that you can see for free, truly a forest of one tree. Some say standing under the tree feels like entering the world of "Avatar." When we visited, there were few people, and it really felt surreal and dreamlike. Next to the tree is a temple with a rare large Buddha made of bamboo weaving—definitely worth seeing. Ruili · Dehong

From Mangshi to Wanting, the route passes through Chudonggua Village and Wenbang Shengyadandu Mountain, two scenic spots, covering about 110 kilometers and nearly three hours of driving, plus a full day for sightseeing. Starting from Mangshi, take National Highway 320 for more than 20 kilometers to the China De'ang Ethnic Museum. This is a small ethnic museum, and the square at the entrance is rich in ethnic characteristics, making it the liveliest place during ethnic festivals. Learning more about minority cultures in Yunnan is part of the travel experience, but be sure to check the museum's opening hours to plan your trip accordingly. From here, navigate to Chudonggua Village via a newly built rural road in good condition, about five kilometers of mountainous road. The main attraction in Chudonggua Village is the Sacred Water Giant Banyan Tree. Yunnan has many banyan tree scenic spots, and you pass several in Dumu Chenglin, so it's not necessary to visit them all. The giant banyan tree in Chudonggua Village is characterized by huge plank-like roots and a wall-like structure at the top about a meter high. Photos don’t quite capture the feeling; the real impact is felt in person. There is also a courtyard in the village where you can taste tea. The owner is a non-heritage inheritor of De'ang ethnic sour tea and also a representative of the People's Congress. This is a cultural heritage exhibition site, usually unattended but monitored by cameras, with signs explaining that visitors can freely use the tea set to boil water and brew tea at no cost. Various packaged teas are clearly priced, and if you like, you can scan a QR code to pay and take the products. The experience is excellent, but of course, don’t forget to be a civilized tourist and tidy up before leaving. The next stop is Wenbang Shengyadandu Mountain. First, navigate to the Mangshi Jingpo Ethnic Museum, which is on the way and worth a visit. This is also a small ethnic museum, designed in the style of Jingpo architecture, and you should also check its opening hours. Wenbang Shengyadandu Mountain is five kilometers from the museum, requiring a mountain drive through villages on small roads, taking more than ten minutes. The navigation destination is a parking lot with staff collecting parking fees. Remember to ask them about the trail to the viewing platform (the left uphill path), not the paid scenic area above (right uphill path, which you can visit if interested). The viewing platform is small but perfectly located to see the Longjiang Basin. The Longjiang River comes from Tengchong and makes a big turn here, flowing south to Ruili, where it is called the Ruili River. It is the China-Myanmar border river and flows into the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar, eventually reaching the Bay of Bengal. We will see its downstream and upstream sections later in Ruili and Tengchong, but the most beautiful scenery is here. There are still more than 30 kilometers to Wanting, less than an hour’s drive. We first visited the Nanqiao Mechanical Workers Anti-Japanese Memorial Park, which includes the Nanqiao Mechanical Workers Monument and Memorial Hall and a statue of Tan Kah Kee. The contributions of the Nanqiao Mechanical Workers and the Chinese Expeditionary Force on the Burma Road to the nation and ethnic groups must not be forgotten, and coming to Wanting is also inspired by this sentiment. The memorial park is on a hillside and is also a great place to view the whole town of Wanting. The Wanting Bridge is at the Wanting Port. To get there, enter from the Wanting Bridge sightseeing corridor and walk more than 800 meters along the border river, or you can buy tickets to take the scenic area shuttle. The Wanting Bridge built during the Burma Road construction was a stone arch bridge but was destroyed in the war. The iron bridge now a scenic spot was built after the war and witnesses the history of China-Myanmar friendship. A new bridge was built beside the iron bridge as the current port passage, separating border-crossing travelers and tourists. Today, Wanting can no longer reproduce the hustle and bustle of its past as a major port, just like this iron bridge has returned to tranquility, with only occasional visitors coming to pay respects and tour.
