Shrines Around Fukuyama Castle: Ishizuchi Shrine and Kuzukake Inari Daimyojin
As you continue strolling around Fukuyama Castle, you'll discover Ishizuchi Shrine and Kuzukake Inari Daimyojin quietly nestled in the corners near the castle. Though both shrines are modest in size, they each carry unique protective meanings, showcasing the distinctive feature of "multi-layered coexistence of beliefs" in Japanese cities.
Ishizuchi Shrine exudes a sense of stability and tranquility, while Kuzukake Inari Daimyojin feels more approachable and intimate. This combination helps one understand that shrines don't need to be grand to become a part of daily life. Taking a leisurely walk in January allows you to slow down and better appreciate the reasons for these shrines' existence.

🪞 Saijo City's "Black Mirror"! A completely still "water mirror" phenomenon 🏔️ reflecting the rooftops of Shikoku.
#JanuaryDestinations2026 If we disregard the legends, this is the ultimate "optical laboratory."
Due to the terrain, the water here often remains perfectly still.
When there's no wind, the entire pool transforms into a giant "black glass." It reflects not only the sky but also the distant, towering peak of Western Japan—Mt. Ishizuchi. Watching that sharp mountain perfectly replicated in the water, forming a symmetrical "Rorschach test," is breathtaking. At this moment, no plants are needed in the foreground; the stark contrast between "mountain and water" alone is enough to keep photographers snapping away.
🌟 Insider Tips:
1. Dawn Photography: The light is hardest in the early morning, and the wind is lightest, making it the best time to capture the "mirror world."
2. Black and White Mode: Try shooting in black and white mode to remove excess color, retaining only the outlines of the mountains and the textures of the water.
💡 Transportation Recommendations:
• By Car: Approximately a 10-minute drive from the "Iyo-Komatsu IC" stop on the Songshan Expressway.

⛰ A breathtaking hike to cleanse your soul at Mount Ishizuchi, one of Japan's Seven Sacred Mountains
#0YenTravel2025Autumn
Mount Ishizuchi (1,982m above sea level), towering over Ehime Prefecture, is the highest peak in western Japan and one of Japan's Seven Sacred Mountains.
The mountain itself is an object of worship, and has long been beloved by many as a "divine mountain."
While there are several hiking trails, the most popular is the Omotesando Route, which takes you up via ropeway.
The Ishizuchi Mountain Ropeway soars to an elevation of around 1,300m, and from there it takes about 2-3 hours to reach the summit.
There's also a steep chain section along the way, which is thrilling!
But the view of the sea of clouds from the top of the rocks and the Seto Inland Sea on a clear day is truly "heavenly." 🌤
At the summit, Mount Tengu, standing on the rock face feels like walking in the sky.
A breathtaking view awaits, so powerful it'll blow away any fatigue you may have. ✨
After descending, take a break at the foot of the mountain with a soothing hot spring and local cuisine.
Filled with nature, a sense of accomplishment, and a sacred atmosphere, this truly is a "heart-cleansing hike." 🍃
⸻
🚗 Access
📍 Saijo City/Kumakogen Town, Ehime Prefecture
🚉 Approximately 2.5 hours by bus and ropeway from Matsuyama Station.
🧗♀️ Hiking Level: Intermediate (features chain sections; beginners are advised to avoid overexertion and take the detour.)
⏰ Total Time: Approximately 5-6 hours round trip (using the ropeway)
Unfortunately, it rained when I went, so I couldn't see the starry sky or the spectacular view, but the sense of accomplishment left me feeling incredibly satisfied!

Thanks to local pride, a rubbish-filled bank has been transformed into a popular spot!
"Teizui's Moss Phlox"
Teizui's Moss Phlox is known as a tourist spot in Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture. Although it is a very beautiful bank now, in the past it was not clean because of the large amount of illegal dumping of garbage.
The local people wondered if there was a way to make the bank beautiful, and as a result, they started planting moss phlox. They started working on it around 2010, and the area has expanded little by little every year until it is now as large as it is now.
The desire of the local people to beautify the bank has grown into a moss phlox tourist attraction representing Ehime Prefecture. Every year, the local people take care of this magnificent moss phlox by replanting, watering, and weeding.
I am filled with gratitude that they do not charge a viewing fee and open it to the public for free.
