Saitama City travel guide and discussion

Visiting Kasukabe isn't just about food and shopping; the real highlight was the flood control project I've been dying to see: the "Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel." We booked a guided tour, and the moment we descended the stairs into the earth, the sheer sense of scale was far more breathtaking than any photo could capture! Here are the two most impressive highlights from the tour: Stepping into a Sci-Fi Scene: The "Underground Temple" (Pressure-Adjusting Water Tank) In this dark underground space stand 59 massive concrete pillars, each weighing 500 tons. Walking among these giants, built to support the earth and buffer floodwaters, feels like stumbling into ancient sci-fi ruins. Seeing this colossal flood defense system protecting the Greater Tokyo Area is genuinely soul-stirring—every photo you snap on your phone looks epic! A Jaw-Dropping Experience: The "No. 1 Shaft" If the temple is spectacular, the No. 1 Shaft is a shock to the system! It's a bottomless 70-meter deep, 30-meter wide pit. The guide mentioned it could fit the entire Statue of Liberty inside. Walking along the narrow "catwalk" and peering down is enough to make anyone's legs go weak and head spin, but the precision and scale of Japanese engineering are simply awe-inspiring. Travel Tips & How to Avoid Pitfalls: Public Transport: Take the Tobu Railway to Minami-Sakurai Station (North Exit), then catch the community bus (Haru Bus) to "RyūQkan." (Note: Buses are infrequent, so check the schedule in advance!) Taxi (Personal Recommendation): If you don't want to be tied to a bus schedule, I suggest taking a taxi from Minami-Sakurai Station. It's about a 7-minute ride. Splitting the fare between 2-3 people is quite affordable and saves a lot of time and effort. Next time you're planning a trip to the Tokyo outskirts, don't just stop at LaLa Garden for late-night snacks. I highly recommend adding this hardcore spot to your list. Challenge yourself to walk the catwalk over the 70-meter shaft—it's guaranteed to be unforgettable!

I’ve been exploring the Kasukabe area lately, and this afternoon I decided to hop over to nearby Iwatsuki, famously known as the "City of Dolls." The main attraction was Japan’s first public doll museum, the Iwatsuki Ningyo Museum. Not only was the exhibition breathtaking, but the adjacent cafe felt like a total hidden gem! Here’s my guide to this fantastic route, perfect for a relaxed half-day trip: A Perfectionist's Paradise That Defies Expectations Stepping into the museum, the modern wooden interior and precise lighting completely wash away the gloomy or eerie vibes often associated with traditional dolls. Getting up close to the Hina and Musha (warrior) dolls, the fabric textures of their kimonos and the tiny accessories in their hands are impossibly detailed. Since I can read Japanese, I took a close look at the displays of tools and historical documents. Seeing the craftsmen's obsession with every step—from the skeletal structure to the final painting—was enough to give me goosebumps. If you’re a stickler for detail, you’ll absolutely love it here! A Hidden Gem Cafe with Serious Skills After processing so many intricate details in the exhibit, I highly recommend heading straight to the museum’s cafe to clear your head! Enjoying a cup of high-quality coffee in such a stylish space to collect your thoughts was honestly the most relaxing part of the afternoon. Practical Travel Tips & Recommendations: 🚀 Fast Transit: Take the Tobu Urban Park Line from Kasukabe; you’ll arrive at Iwatsuki Station in about 15 minutes. Exit from the East Gate and take a leisurely 10-minute stroll to reach the museum. 🕒 Scheduling: Budget about 2 to 3 hours for the museum and coffee. I highly recommend visiting in the afternoon—it’s not too rushed, and it’s the perfect way to dodge the cold wind or the hot sun outside. Next time you're planning a trip to the Tokyo suburbs, make sure to add this culturally rich spot with great coffee to your bucket list!

Kawagoe City is located in the southwestern part of Saitama Prefecture, just a 30-minute train ride from Ikebukuro Station or under an hour from Shinjuku and Shibuya, making it highly accessible from central Tokyo. Once a bustling castle town during the Edo period (1603–1868), it beautifully retains the charm of a bygone era. Founded in 541 AD, Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine serves as the "So-chinju" (the grand guardian shrine) of Kawagoe City. With a rich history spanning 1,500 years, it has long been deeply worshipped as a shrine for matchmaking and good relationships ⛩️ From late June to early September every year, the shrine hosts its most iconic summer event, the Enmusubi Wind Chime Festival, decorating the grounds with around 2,000 Edo wind chimes 🎐 Edo wind chimes are traditional Japanese glass chimes featuring hand-painted designs by skilled artisans. It is said that if you tie a paper strip (tanzaku) with your wish written on it within the shrine grounds, the refreshing sound of the chimes will carry your prayers to the gods on the breeze. During the day, you can enjoy the refreshing sight of the wind chimes sparkling in the sunlight. At night, the small stream within the shrine grounds is illuminated, creating a dreamy and magical atmosphere. The stunning scenery changes beautifully from day to night 🌙 Come and experience a refreshing getaway surrounded by a quintessential Japanese summer vibe. Spot [Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine]

Saitama is only an hour away from Tokyo, making it perfect for anyone with a free day looking to explore a quiet town nearby. I highly recommend it! We took the train from Shinjuku Station (note: ticket purchases are cash only!). 🚆🎌 📍Old Town Kawagoe 🏯 This is an absolute must-visit spot! It’s famously known as "Little Edo." Renting a kimono and strolling through the historic streets really makes you feel like you've traveled back in time to the Edo period. 📍Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine💖 A shrine famous for love and matchmaking! Walking in, I was surrounded by couples 😂. They also have these super cute fish-shaped fortune slips. You get to use a little fishing rod to catch your fortune from the pool—such a fun and unique experience! 📍Shingashi River🌸 Just walk out to the street right behind the shrine. Keep heading straight, and you'll reach a river beautifully lined with cherry blossoms on both sides. It’s absolutely stunning, though they were only just starting to bloom when we went, so we kind of missed the full view 🥹 📍Mille Mele🍎 An apple pie shop that claims to sell the best apple pie in the world! (Or so they say 😂). We got the one served with ice cream, and it was genuinely delicious. The filling was super generous with huge chunks of apple—totally worth it! We stumbled upon this place while walking from the Old Town to the shrine. trip travel

#springtravel Beautiful park. Lots of trees, sounds of semi, room to walk, run, bring dogs, pond I see people fishing, area for exercises etc A very big park where anyone can have a quiet and peaceful walk, take a dog for a walk, take kida to the playground, do some exercise or even go for a picnic. Honestly one of the most peaceful park. It has a nice pond where you can even do some fishing if you wanted to and a lot of benches and chairs where you can sit. There are also tables to use. There are a couple of things to see here like the pond, the Kaze no Kami statue and a small shrine. Very pretty.
