This guide will provide helpful insights.
Use this guide to plan your trip! ✨
1️⃣ Basic Information
Location: Republic of Uzbekistan (Central Asia)
Capital: Tashkent
Official Language: Uzbek (Russian is also widely spoken)
English: Commonly understood among younger generations and in tourist areas.
Access:
・Airport: The main gateway is Tashkent International Airport.
There are direct flights from Narita to Tashkent, but they are limited, so connecting flights are more common.
・City Transport: Taxis (Yandex GO) are convenient for city travel.
・Domestic Travel: High-speed trains are a great option!
Recommended Duration:
・Touring the 4 major cities: At least 7 days
・Samarkand only: 3–4 days is sufficient
Cost Estimate:
Daily Budget:
・Backpacker: $25–$40/day (including accommodation, food, and transport)
・Mid-range travel: $50–$100/day
・Entrance Fees: Major historical sites (e.g., Registan in Samarkand) cost around ¥1,200. Most attractions are accessible for ¥1,000 or less.
・Transport Costs: Taxis are very affordable at around ¥300 for city travel, and high-speed trains cost approximately ¥3,000.
Best Season:
March–May and September–October, when the weather is mild.
SIM Cards:
Both physical SIMs and eSIMs are available. I purchased a physical SIM at the local airport.
Cash:
While credit cards are accepted in Tashkent and some tourist areas, they often incur fees. Most accommodations require cash payments. It’s recommended to exchange dollars or withdraw cash from ATMs.
2️⃣ Recommended Tourist Cities
◇ 1: Samarkand
A major Silk Road trading city, famous for its stunning blue-tiled mosques and mausoleums.
◾️ Highlights:
① Registan Square
The iconic symbol of Samarkand, surrounded by three massive madrasahs. The nighttime illumination is magical.
② Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum
One of the most significant architectural complexes of the medieval East, housing the mausoleum of Timur and his descendants.
③ Shah-i-Zinda Mausoleum Complex
A series of blue-tiled mausoleums, considered the most enchanting in Samarkand. The vibrant blue tiles here make other blues seem pale in comparison. (I recommend visiting around 7 AM to avoid crowds; I went at 10 AM, and it was packed.)
◇ 2: Bukhara
Once the cultural center of the Islamic world, Bukhara retains its historical charm with Islamic architecture and a medieval atmosphere.
◾️ Highlights:
① Kalyan Minaret: The symbol of Bukhara
② Ark Fortress: A symbol of state power located at the heart of Bukhara
③ Lyabi Hauz Architectural Complex: A beautiful square surrounded by cafes and a pond. Perfect for relaxing if you have time.
◇ 3: Khiva
Formerly the capital of the Khiva Khanate, this walled historic city offers a time-travel-like experience to the medieval era.
◇ 4: Tashkent
The capital of Uzbekistan, blending modernity with historical architecture. The fountain show at Tashkent City is breathtaking.
◾️ Highlights:
① Chorsu Bazaar
A large market where you can experience local food culture.
② Tashkent City
A hub for modern Uzbekistan, featuring shopping malls, cafes, parks, and more.
③ Magic City
Free admission. Worth a visit if you have time (activities inside may incur charges).
3️⃣ Safety Information
The major cities are very safe. Women can walk around alone without worry 🙆♂️. Tourist police are present at attractions, and locals are incredibly kind.
4️⃣ Sample Itinerary
Here’s my actual travel schedule:
Day 1: Arrive at Tashkent Airport, explore Tashkent, overnight in Tashkent
Day 2: Tashkent → Samarkand, overnight in Samarkand
Day 3: Explore Samarkand → Bukhara (arrive late at night), overnight in Bukhara
Day 4: Explore Bukhara, overnight in Bukhara
Day 5: Early morning (5 AM) Bukhara → Khiva, explore Khiva, overnight in Khiva
Day 6: Explore Khiva → Tashkent (evening), overnight train
Day 7: Arrive in Tashkent
This itinerary is quite packed, covering 4 cities in 7 days. It’s physically demanding, so I wouldn’t recommend it for those who prefer avoiding late-night or early-morning travel.
5️⃣ Transportation Tips
Airport/Station Access:
Yandex Go, a ride-hailing app, is very convenient. While local transport is available, Google Maps doesn’t work well, so using the app reduces stress.
Avoid hailing taxis on the street as they can be expensive or involve scams. Download Yandex Go in Japan beforehand (SMS verification may not work abroad).
Night Train Tips:
Choose the lower bunk! The upper bunk is extremely cramped, making it difficult to sit up. You’ll have to lie down the entire time, which can be uncomfortable. (Lower bunks sell out quickly, so last-minute bookings may not be available.)
6️⃣ Summary
Uzbekistan is a treasure trove of attractions, like a highlight reel of the Silk Road. It’s a safe destination for solo female travelers, so if you’re curious, definitely consider visiting! 👀⭐️
