Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Melaka are usually the Malaysian destinations that come to mind first. Kuching felt different, quieter, slower and a little less talked about. And that was exactly what made me curious. After spending time here, I realized that Kuching isn’t a city you need to rush through. It’s a place where you can simply walk, eat, explore, watch the river, meet the local atmosphere and let the day unfold naturally. And the best part? You don’t need a huge budget to enjoy it. Here’s how I would recommend experiencing Kuching if it’s your first visit. · -- 🇲🇾 DAY 1 — WALKING THROUGH THE HEART OF KUCHING I started my Kuching experience at the Kuching Waterfront. Early in the day, the atmosphere was calm. Later, as the temperature became more comfortable, the riverside slowly became livelier. Walking along the waterfront without any particular destination was one of those simple travel moments I really enjoyed. From there, I wandered into Main Bazaar, where traditional shops, souvenirs and old buildings give you a first glimpse of Kuching’s character. Then came Carpenter Street. This was one of my favorite areas to explore on foot. The old shophouses, small cafés, local restaurants and narrow streets made me slow down and look around rather than simply tick places off a checklist. If you have enough time, Bako National Park is one of the experiences I would strongly consider adding to your Kuching itinerary. The journey itself becomes part of the adventure. You leave the city behind and gradually find yourself surrounded by Sarawak’s natural landscape. It reminded me that Kuching is special not only because of its heritage and food, but also because of how easily the city connects you with nature. After returning to Kuching, I kept the rest of the day slow. A little market browsing. A little souvenir shopping. Another walk through the familiar streets. And finally, one more evening beside the Sarawak River. By then, Kuching no longer felt like a place I was simply visiting. What makes Siniawan even more special is its rich history. Once an important riverside trading settlement established by Chinese settlers over a century ago, the town still preserves its charming wooden shophouses that line the old streets, giving visitors a glimpse into Sarawak’s early trading days. Flying saves many hours compared with travelling overland. Here is my practical guide to the domestic departure area of Sandakan Airport. How early should you arrive? For a domestic flight, I recommend arriving around 1.5–2 hours before departure. The airport itself is compact and easy to navigate, but check-in and baggage-drop lines can still become busy. Airlines also close their counters before departure, so arriving at the last minute is not worth the risk. Allow additional time when travelling with checked luggage, during weekends or around Malaysian public holidays. A small airport that is easy to navigate One of the biggest advantages of Sandakan Airport is its size. You do not need to walk through endless corridors or take a train between terminals. Check-in counters, security, shops and departure gates are all relatively easy to find. It is much less overwhelming than Kuala Lumpur International Airport and works especially well for short regional flights around Sabah. Airside Shop Express After passing through security, you can find Airside Shop Express. It sells packaged snacks, sweets, drinks and various small travel essentials. This is a useful place to buy something for the flight, particularly when travelling with an airline that does not include complimentary food. The selection is not enormous, but it is enough for basic last-minute purchases. Cocoa Wonder There is also a Cocoa Wonder shop offering chocolate and different sweet products. It is a convenient stop when you need a compact edible gift or simply want something sweet before boarding. Packaged chocolate can also be easier to carry than large or fragile souvenirs, especially when Sandakan is only one stop on a longer journey around Borneo. Why I think it is worth entering: · ✈️ Free access for eligible frequent flyers – a comfortable place to relax before your flight without extra cost. · 🛋️ Comfortable waiting environment – escape the busy terminal, enjoy a quieter space, charging areas, and a more relaxing pre-flight moment. · 🍜 My personal favourite highlight: Sarawak Laksa! – having a taste of this local favourite before flying is definitely a nice touch. · 🍽️ Food selection is decent but limited – enough for a quick bite, but don’t expect a huge premium buffet spread. · 🍺 Alcohol bar available – a nice bonus for travellers who enjoy a drink before departure. · 💰 For paid entry, I would think twice – if you have to pay for access, I personally would not recommend it as the overall experience only meets the basic lounge expectation. Some travellers also find the food selection and facilities quite basic compared with larger airline lounges. · ⭐ A good airport comfort zone, but not a luxury lounge experience – it does the job, but it does not exceed expectations.
