I got hypnotized starting from Sendai Station, S-PAL, Daiso, and stretched all the way to Yodobashi Camera. In the end, I arrived at the hotel almost an hour late because "just a quick look" simply doesn't exist. That morning, we were short on time. Our luggage was packed, check-out was approaching, and the airport was waiting. But while the streets were still light, we decided to take a walk—making this morning unhurried despite the time constraints. From the hotel, a less than fifteen-minute walk brought Sendai Asaichi gradually into view. A small market tucked away in a corner of the city, the air permeated with the scent of life. This Sendai morning market has been open since after World War II and continues to serve as the "city's central kitchen." Many vendors are locals who have passed down their businesses through generations. The clean, smooth concrete walkways, bathed in the morning sunlight casting shadows between stalls of fresh vegetables, fish, and styrofoam boxes from the harbor, created a scene that made us want to slow down our pace. And on the corner stood a small wooden shop with a long queue of people, called Umi no Te (海の神) —a sushi and oyster shop serving ingredients from the eastern Tohoku coast, sourcing their produce from the seas of the Tohoku region. Large grilled oysters (Dai Size) were served in their palm-sized shells. A variety of condiments were lined up on the table. Unfortunately, we were short on time, so we could only look, not try anything, because we had to rush back to check out. But upon arrival, we were met with a massive crowd queuing so long there was hardly any room to stand. We were too short on time to wait. We exchanged glances and immediately decided to change our plan… "Let's explore Mont-Bell first, then grab something to eat along the way." After crossing the pedestrian bridge and walking through the cool autumn breeze, our eyes caught sight of a sign. It showed "grilled beef tongue on a wooden tray." It looked rustic, but it seemed delicious. An instinct told us immediately… "This is it." Below was "another world." The atmosphere was like a secret society hidden underground, divided into two zones as if in different dimensions: Left zone: A raised Japanese-style platform where shoes must be removed. Low wooden tables are arranged on tatami mats. The customers are groups of young adults and working professionals after work. Laughter, clinking glasses, and the sizzling sound of meat on the grill mingle with a wisp of smoke. Right zone: Modern tables and chairs. Wooden partitions provide a slightly calmer atmosphere, ideal for groups who want to have a long conversation. A staff member asked, "We smoke in our restaurant, is that okay?" Or the small corner where someone sat quietly reading a book amidst the people passing by. Everything seemed to flow smoothly, naturally, and I found myself lost in thought. At one point, as I walked past the clear glass of the cafe… I saw my own reflection, "traveling," superimposed on the person sitting inside, "eating breakfast." The display case showcased a variety of chocolates, along with some desserts to choose from. The entire shop exuded a quiet and refined atmosphere. I purchased the "salted chocolate made with salt from Hon-Shiogama" and some madeleines. I couldn't resist trying one right outside the shop. She looks out over the same city as Masamune once did, except instead of sharp swords and metal, there's a smile and gentle shadows. Inside the Kannon statue, there's a path that most people don't realize—a narrow passageway that takes us up the elevator to the 12th floor before beginning our "descent." The spiral staircase that wraps around the statue's core is quieter than you might think, and the sound of your own footsteps echoes back to you. Along the way, statues of Buddha and Japanese deities line the small niches. Each statue has a unique gaze—a reminder that no two faiths are alike. It's 6 AM at Sendai Station. I decided to check out what shops are open on the third floor of the Shinkansen platform. [Result] The only place open at 6 AM is the NewDays convenience store. You can also buy snacks and souvenirs here, but since it's the only place open, it's fairly busy. I even saw Lapras, the Miyagi Prefecture Pokemon. [Waiting Room] The waiting room, or rather, the spacious area with chairs lined up, started to get crowded after 6 AM. There are booths where you can use the working space for a fee. [Lunchboxes, Souvenirs, and Cafes] Most shops seem to open at 6:30 AM. The place seems to get more lively after 6:30 AM. [NewDays] Opens at 5:40 AM. You can get Tohoku souvenirs, beef tongue bento boxes, sandwiches, and more. Only the counter-operated store is open. There's a self-checkout store across the street, but it opens later than the counter-operated store. [Display] There's an exhibit introducing Tohoku festivals.
