Some trips catch your attention because of the destination. Others catch your attention because of the price. This one did both. While browsing flights from Singapore to Xi’an, I came across a return fare of just US$260 per person. At first, I honestly thought I might have missed something. Because when you compare it with other available options, fares can easily go above US$400 and even beyond US$800, depending on the dates and itinerary. So seeing US$260 for a round trip to Xi’an immediately made me stop and take a closer look. And yes, there is a catch. This is not the most effortless itinerary. It involves a transit in Shenzhen, so it is not the kind of journey where you simply board once and forget about everything until you arrive. But personally? For this price, I wouldn't mind. · -- ✈️ The journey, with one important thing to remember The outbound journey starts very early from Singapore, flying with Shenzhen Airlines via Shenzhen before continuing to Xi’an. The total journey is around 10 hours, including a 2-hour-50-minute connection in Shenzhen. There is one thing I would absolutely want to highlight for anyone considering this fare: On the outbound connection in Shenzhen, you need to collect your checked baggage and check it in again. That is important. With an early-morning departure, I would personally plan ahead and be at Changi Airport the night before or very early in the morning rather than rushing at the last minute. Once that part is taken care of, the rest of the journey is straightforward, and the reward is arriving in Xi’an. The return journey is a little more relaxed. There is a longer connection in Shenzhen, but you do not need to collect and re-check your baggage on the way back. And the fare includes 23 kg of checked baggage, which makes the US$260 price even more appealing. · -- 🏮 Is a little extra effort worth it for Xi’an? For me, absolutely. Xi’an is one of those destinations where I feel the journey itself is only a small part of the story. The moment you start imagining the ancient city walls, historic streets, traditional architecture, evening lights and the atmosphere of one of China's great historic cities, that little inconvenience of a transit suddenly feels much less important. Yes, you may be a little tired. Yes, Shenzhen adds an extra step. But sometimes travel is about accepting a little inconvenience in exchange for experiencing somewhere you've genuinely wanted to see. And I have a feeling that once you are walking through Xi’an, you won't be thinking about the hours spent in transit anymore. You'll simply be glad you came. · -- 💰 US$260 changes the equation This is probably the part that impressed me most. Singapore ⇌ Xi’an for US$260 round trip, per person. With 23 kg checked baggage included, that is a seriously attractive fare. And honestly, I feel a little jealous of travellers in Singapore right now. 😄 Having the opportunity to reach a destination as fascinating as Xi’an at around this price is something I would find very difficult to ignore. If I were in Singapore and saw this fare available for my dates, I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about the Shenzhen connection. I'd probably book it. Because when the difference is potentially hundreds of dollars compared with other fares, I would rather save the money and put it toward the trip itself, food, hotels, sightseeing, or simply staying a little longer in Xi’an. · -- 🧳 What about flexibility? The standard Economy fare is US$260 per person. There is also a TripFlex EasyCancel & Change option for an additional US$42 per person, which allows free cancellation and changes under the stated conditions. If your travel dates are firm, the standard fare may be all you need. If your plans might change, paying a little extra for flexibility could be worth considering. · -- 🔎 One thing I would definitely do before booking Don't assume US$260 will always be available. Airfares can change from day to day depending on travel dates, demand and remaining seats. So if you're seriously considering this route, I would search several nearby dates on Trip.com rather than checking only one date. Sometimes moving your trip by just a day or two can make a surprisingly big difference. · -- ❤️ Would I take this flight? Yes. Without much hesitation. Not because it is the most luxurious or effortless itinerary. But because sometimes the best travel deal isn't the flight that saves you the most time. It's the one that gives you the best balance between price, comfort and the experience waiting at the other end. For US$260, I can accept a little extra time in transit. I can collect my luggage and check it in again. I can wake up early. Because at the end of that journey is Xi’an, a city with centuries of history waiting to be explored. And honestly, if I were in Singapore right now and found this fare for my dates… I wouldn't worry too much about the transit. When traveling after 50, the biggest worry isn’t lacking stamina but turning a place into a rushed checklist. I’ve been to many places and increasingly feel that truly enjoyable travel means taking it slow, seeing things at a relaxed pace, and doing only one or two activities a day. These 8 destinations are perfect for settling in for a few days. They offer sea, mountains, ancient towns, and even the unexpected desolation of northwest China. Pick one, stay a while, and don’t rush to leave. 1️⃣ Lingshui | Hainan Many head straight to Sanya but overlook nearby Lingshui. The sea here is quieter, and prices are more reasonable. Visit Boundary Island in the morning. The boat ride takes about 10 minutes. The island is small, so stroll along the boardwalk with reefs on one side and clear sea on the other. When tired, sit in the shade of the sea-view platform and relax without rushing to do activities. The cable car at Nanwan Monkey Island is worth taking. The sea crossing offers wide-open views. The island has many monkeys, so don’t carry plastic bags—they’re quick to snatch them. In the afternoon, return to Xincun Port in town and find a seafood raft restaurant. Prices are much better than inside the scenic area. ⚠️ Boundary Island has strong winds and waves in the afternoon. If you get seasick, try to take the early boat. 2️⃣ Beihai | Guangxi Beihai’s pace is slower than many coastal cities. Stay two nights on Weizhou Island instead of a day trip to avoid spending all your time traveling. Rent an electric scooter after arriving and explore the island slowly along the coastal road. Watch the sunrise at Shell Beach and the sunset at Dishui Danping. Hiking through Crocodile Mountain Volcano Park takes about two hours. The path has many steps, so if your knees aren’t strong, just walk halfway up for the sea view. The island’s Catholic church is worth a visit. It’s quiet inside, though many take photos outside. Back in the city, visit Beihai Old Street in the evening. The dessert shops under the arcade are packed with locals. Try a bowl of locust flower jelly or Qingbuliang for just over 5 yuan. Silver Beach has fine sand but is scorching during the day. Go after 5 PM to enjoy walking barefoot comfortably. 3️⃣ Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan Xishuangbanna is best visited in winter. While northern China is cold, you can still wear short sleeves here. Reserve at least half a day for the Chinese Academy of Sciences Botanical Garden. It’s large, so take the electric cart to the innermost part, then walk outward slowly to save energy and see the giant water lilies and tropical rainforest’s large buttress roots. The peacock release at the Primitive Forest Park happens at 10 AM. After watching, walk part of the valley rainforest trail—you don’t need to finish the whole path. The Dai Ethnic Style Park feels like a living village. Visit in the afternoon to see Dai bamboo houses, then have lemongrass grilled fish at the village’s Dai restaurant at dusk. It’s much more authentic than the trendy spots in the nearby Gaozhuang Xishuangjing. ⚠️ Many “Lao coffee” drinks at the night market are instant powder mixes. For authentic coffee, look for alley shops in Jinghong city. 4️⃣ Baiyin | Gansu The Yellow River Stone Forest is an underrated spot. Its desolate beauty can’t be captured in photos. The scenic area is in Longwan Village. After entering the gate, take an electric cart to Yinma Valley entrance, then switch to a donkey cart. The driver hums local tunes. Don’t mind the slow pace—it’s perfect for admiring the stone forest on both sides. At the valley’s end, there’s a steep staircase leading to a viewpoint of the Yellow River’s big bend. If you’re short on energy, the valley floor view is still impressive. ⚠️ Avoid visiting on rainy days as the stone paths get slippery. Food options inside are limited, so bring snacks and water. Afterward, go to Jingtai County for a bowl of hand-pulled noodles—it’s very satisfying. 5️⃣ Xinzhou | Shanxi Xinzhou has both historic sites and natural scenery but is often overlooked. Stay at least one night at Mount Wutai instead of a day trip. Visit the temple complex in Taihuai Town at 6 AM before tourists arrive. The 1,008 steps to Dailuo Peak are challenging, so take your time. If needed, use the cable car. The panoramic view of Taihuai Town from the top is worth it. Yanmen Pass is in Daixian County. It’s windy, so bring an extra jacket. The well-maintained fortress still carries a strong sense of history. Standing on the gate tower, you can imagine the “one man guards the pass” scene. Laoniuwan in Pianguan County is remote and best reached by car. The Yellow River makes a big bend here. At sunset, the river glows golden, creating a peaceful atmosphere perfect for daydreaming. 6️⃣ Daxing’anling Region | Heilongjiang To see Daxing’anling’s forests, you don’t have to go to crowded Hulunbuir. Near the Arctic Village, there’s polar day around the summer solstice, with daylight lasting until 11 PM—very magical. The village is small; one night is enough. Take a morning walk along the Heilongjiang River. Across the river is Russian forestland. It’s about an hour’s drive from Mohe city. The road is good but winding, so don’t speed. The forest scenery is mainly along the road. Stop anywhere, walk into the trails, and you’ll see straight larches and birches everywhere. The air smells strongly of pine resin. ⚠️ Mosquitoes are abundant in summer. Long sleeves and pants are more effective than insect repellent. 7️⃣ Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture | Sichuan Jiuzhaigou is famous, but those who know also visit Huanglong and Siguniang Mountain separately. The sightseeing buses in Jiuzhaigou are well organized. Take the bus to the Primitive Forest first, then explore downward to avoid crowds. Don’t miss Five Flower Lake and Long Lake. Huanglong is at high altitude, so don’t rush or you’ll get short of breath. After taking the cable car up, walk down slowly. The calcified pools shine bright blue in the sun. Siguniang Mountain is best for an overnight stay. Take the sightseeing bus to the innermost part of Shuangqiao Valley, then explore outward slowly. Snowy mountains and grasslands are right in front of you. Find a grassy slope to sit on and enjoy the view for hours. ⚠️ These places are all at high altitude. For travelers over 50, it’s recommended to bring an oxygen tank in advance rather than buying one when feeling unwell. 8️⃣ Shangluo | Shaanxi Shangluo lies deep in the Qinling Mountains and is like a natural air conditioner in summer. The Jinshixia Gorge has boardwalks throughout, making walking easy. The creek water is crystal clear and cool air refreshes you. Even in the hottest weather, walking here is comfortable. Tianshuxia is quieter and better for those who prefer peace. The gorge has one waterfall after another. Two hours is enough for a slow walk. Manchuan Pass Ancient Town is small but retains the old southern Shaanxi charm. The cobblestone streets are lined with old houses. Find a teahouse to sit and listen to locals chatting. The ancient pagoda at Baita Temple stands in the fields. Visit at dusk when the light is soft. There are few tourists, and it’s very peaceful. ⚠️ Shangluo’s mountain roads have many curves. If you get car sick, prepare medication in advance. Travel after 50 isn’t about chasing the number of sights but choosing the right places and settling in comfortably. Everyone says that travel cools down once the summer holidays are over, but some people flock to popular cities in July and August. Tickets are twice as expensive, hotels are overflowing, and taking pictures is all in the back of their heads. I don't believe in evil, so I choose to go out and walk around from the end of August to September. There are fewer people, it's cool, and my wallet can still take a breather. These 8 places, which I have fielded, compared prices, personally tried the route, to tell the truth, when you need to save, when you need to spend. 01 Xiangyang | Hubei ⏰ Enter Gurung Chung at 7am, the ticket office has just opened, tourists have not yet arrived. The fog in the mountains has not dissipated, the stone road is wet, and the bamboos in front of Sangu Hall are rustled by the wind. Walking at this time is worthy of the word "quiet". By the time the tour arrives after nine o'clock, you've already taken all the empty views of the Grass Pavilion. Tickets are not cheap to buy on-site, but booking a day in advance on the official platform can save you $20. ⚠️ Don't believe the "take you to walk the path free ticket" at the door to solicit customers, the detour to the back hill is all wild slopes, a fall is not worth it. After walking out of Gurung Chung, don't take a taxi in such a hurry. Bus No. 512 goes directly to the city. It's a two-dollar chicken. It saves you money on a bowl of beef noodles than an online ride-hailing bus. 🍜 At noon, turn into Tanxi Road, casually find a noodle stall opened downstairs from residents, Xiangyang beef noodles standard with yellow wine and garlic cloves. The spicy oil is thick, the alkaline noodles are bouncy enough, and I sweat on my forehead after a bowl. In the afternoon, I went to North Street for a walk. There is an old man setting up a stall at the foot of the city wall selling golden cakes. A pack of chicken for five dollars will fall off after a bite. It is much more practical than the thirty-dollar souvenirs in the scenic spot. 02 Stationed Horse Store | Henan The mountain is related to "Journey to the West", but don't expect to see any special effects scenes. A mountain is a mountain, with strange stones, many holes and dense trees. Enter from the south gate at 8am, walk the Westward Journey Cultural Trail, detour to Lake Biwa and then to the top of the mountain. The whole journey is three hours, perfect for people with moderate physical strength. ⚠️ The cable car at the north gate is not good. The queue is forty minutes, and it's only twenty minutes less to go up. It's not worth it. Old Leshan is more windy and more primitive. The trail from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain is well built, but there are few resupply points. I have to carry two bottles of water on my own. The wind at the summit is strong enough to blow away your hat. Remember to bring a thin jacket when you go in September. In the afternoon, I went down the mountain and went to the village under the mountain. I ordered a pot of ground pot chicken and sticky cakes for dipping in soup in the farmhouse. It only cost $60 for two people. 🚄 Take a taxi from Zhuma Tien West Station to Mount Yuen for about 40 dollars, it's more cost-effective to share the ride. Don't walk all two mountains in one day, your feet will be useless. I held on hard that year, and the next day my calf hurt so much that I couldn’t go downstairs, and my schedule after that was all a mess. 03 Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture |Xinjiang The blue of Lake Sailimu is the kind of blue that you would be shocked to see in photos a hundred times and see with your own eyes. ⏰ After 5pm the light shines slantingly on the water, the color of the lake changes from gem blue to dark green, and swans swim slowly on the shore. Don’t flock to the east coast as soon as you walk in. Open towards the south coast with half less people and twice as many photo spots. The Grand Canyon of Anjihai is just around the corner on the way to Lake Sailimu. There are no guardrails at the edge of the canyon, ⚠️ Don’t lean too close to the side for photos, the soil is loose, stepping on the air is not a joke. The drone is shocking to fly, but the wind is strong and the crash rate is high, so do what you can. The mountains and rivers of Hot Springs County are harvested by accident. Forty minutes out of Sailimu Lake, there is a wild hot spring in the valley, locals call it "hot water ditch", the water is so hot that your feet can't put it down, soak for a while and relax your whole body. Accommodation Choose a B&B in Hot Springs County Town for two hundred dollars a night, half cheaper than inside the scenic spot. 🍜 For dinner, eat Kazakh naren, with noodles spread on the bottom, horse meat covered on top, and poured with a spoonful of hot soup. It warms people's hearts in cold weather. 04 Wu Zhong | Ningxia The Bronze Canyon Yellow River Grand Canyon, whose name sounds tough, is actually very comfortable to walk on. Enter the scenic spot at nine in the morning, first take a boat to cross the river, from the water to see the rock walls on both banks, ocher red, earth yellow stacked together, as if cut by a knife. The 108 towers are on the hillside on the other side of the river. Looking up from below, the towers are so layered that it is impossible to count how many there are. ⏰ After seeing the tower before noon, the light was too hard in the afternoon, all the photos were dead white. Dining inside the scenic area is expensive. A bowl of noodles costs thirty dollars, and the taste is about that. Bring your own dry food, come out to town to eat hand-grabbed lamb, Wu Zhong's beach lamb is not greasy, dipped in vinegar and garlic to eat, fragrant to lick your fingers. 🚄 Yinchuan to Wuzhong high-speed rail half an hour, out of the station take a taxi to the scenic spot about twenty kilometers. Don't pack a group for a day trip. The schedule is so rushed that it's like a war. It's more comfortable to walk around on your own. 05 Qingdao | Shandong Mount Yi and Guanqiao are separated by a distance of the entire city. Don't think about walking them all in one day. Choose the Yangkou Line from Mount Yi, enter the mountain at 7am, climb Mi Tien Cave, cross Shouzi Peak, and reach the top of the mountain to see the sea and sky. ⚠️ Tai clear line afternoon backlight, portrait face all black, do not waste time. Don't go to the canyon in the morning. Tour groups flock to it. The bridge is so crowded that it looks like a subway during the morning rush hour. ⏰ Go after 5:30 pm, the sunset dyes Huilan Pavilion golden, seagulls fly around, locals walking time, but the most comfortable. The stall selling grilled squid in Qiaotou sells chicken for 10 dollars, which is bigger than the 15-dollar ones in the scenic spot. Go to the Olympic Sailing Center at night with the lights on and the sea breeze for a lap along the Lover’s Dam. The sailboat is parked in the harbor, the mast is swaying back and forth, and the light show at May Fourth Square in the distance starts at eight o'clock. 🍜 After watching, go to Minjiang Road to eat wild wontons, the soup is fresh and big filling, with a grilled meat, 20 dollars per person to eat full. 06 Ankang | Shaanxi The Thousand Layers River is deep in the Qinling Mountains, and the water is that emerald green, so clear that you can see the rocks at the bottom of the river. Went in late August, the water was cool but not piercing, except for the shoes stepped in, the soles of the feet were pebbled and itchy and cool. A two-hour walk along the riverwalk, waterfalls, deep pools, and shallows rotate, changing the view with each turn. The ancient terraces of Fengyan are not on the list of scenic spots, but they are my favorite place in Ankang. ⏰ In early September, the rice began to turn yellow, the terraces were laid from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain.
