2024 Shangri-La Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
Shangri-La is located in the northwestern part of Yunnan in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. It is located at the confluence of the three provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet. Shangri-La was formerly known as Zhongdian County. It was renamed due to its similarity to the heavenly location described in James Hilton's 1933 novel "Lost Horizon". In Tibetan, Shangri-la means “Shang Mountain pass”. It is a pure land that perfectly preserves the area’s natural ecology and traditional culture. The grasslands surrounded by snow-capped mountains are full of bright sunshine and fresh air. There are also clear and tranquil lakes as well as magnificent temples and friendly Tibetans.

Riding Through Freedom: A Journey at Napa Lake, Shangri-La
#chinatrip #travel #shangri-la
Napa Lake Wetland Nature Reserve, located north of Shangri-La County, is a vast and stunning highland wetland surrounded by mountains. In spring and summer, the land blooms with lush grass and flowers, while autumn and winter bring a golden hue to the landscape. We had an unforgettable horse-riding experience on this expansive plain. The dry, sunny weather kept the ground firm and not muddy, allowing us to gallop freely and feel a rare sense of liberation. Our friendly horse guide captured many photos and videos for us, preserving these precious memories. Along the way, we stopped at a small station offering Tibetan costume dressing and archery experiences at minimal charges, adding an authentic cultural touch to our adventure. This area is also a haven for birdwatching; however, the red-crowned cranes we hoped to see only arrive in winter. Despite this, we were delighted by other birds and a beautiful white yak named "Bei Bei," whose snowy-white coat was truly captivating. This ride was more than just a physical activity—it was a soulful escape, immersing us in the pure serenity of this highland paradise.
Just returned from Shangri-La, and I can't get over it.

Guide to Xueda Lake and Meili Snow Mountain
This is the best paradise!
Attraction Introduction
Shangri-La has a Tibetan village called Shuoda Village, which is like a paradise. There are only a dozen households here. The villagers raise cattle and farm, living a peaceful and simple life. There is also a beautiful lake in the village called Xueda Lake. It is the only place in Shangri-La where you can see the reflection of the 13 peaks of Meili Snow Mountain. Here, you can enjoy the magnificent sunrise and the beautiful sunset.
Food
In Shangri-La, you can taste butter tea, which is rich in milk and tea flavor, warming and delicious. There is also yak meat, which is firm and chewy, with a unique flavor whether stewed or roasted. In addition, Tibetan yogurt is also a must-try delicacy, with a thick texture and a moderate sweet and sour taste.
Attractions
1. Xueda Lake: Located on the top of the mountain, with a wide view, you can see the 13 peaks of Meili Snow Mountain, which is an excellent place to view the snow-capped mountains. Don't miss the sunrise in the morning. The first ray of sunlight shines on Meili Snow Mountain, and the white mountain top is covered with a warm and bright veil, which is beautiful. You can also see the reflection of the Meili peaks from the calm lake, as if the world is in it, giving you double the beauty.
2. Shuoda Village: Experience the quiet life of a Tibetan village and the simple folk customs.
Tips
1. Transportation: Depart from Shangri-La, pass through Benzilan, Deqin County, and Foshan Township to Shuoda Village, about 250 km in total, 5 hours by car. The whole journey is on asphalt roads, and the road conditions are good, but the road from Foshan Township to Shuoda Village is narrow, with continuous uphill curves, high terrain, steep cliffs on the outside, and the Lancang River below. New drivers should not try it. Shuoda Village is relatively remote, and public transportation is not easy to reach. Self-driving or chartering a car is more convenient.
2. Accommodation: You can choose to stay in Shuoda Village. Each family has guest rooms, and the price is about CNY 600 or more. You can also stay in Foshan Township, where there are accommodations and restaurants, but the conditions are average, and the price is about CNY 100.
3. Travel time: In autumn and winter, the weather is good, and the probability of seeing Meili Snow Mountain is high. You can watch the sunrise from 7–8 am. At around 10 am, the wind blows, and the ripples on the lake make the reflection less beautiful.
4. Travel tips: Bring a telephoto camera for better photos. It is cold in the morning and evening, so remember to bring a thick coat, hat, gloves, etc. It is very sunny here, so sunscreen is a must. The mountain road is rugged, so prepare motion sickness patches. Remember to close the door when entering and leaving the village, and take your trash with you when you leave.

Night Life in Shangri-La

#100waysoftravel
I visited several bars with live music in Shangri-La's old town, where the atmosphere was relaxed, and most of the singers had beautiful voices and performed wonderfully.
Nightlife in Shangri-La is more laid-back and culturally immersive than bustling city scenes. Centered around Dukezong Ancient Town, the evening offers cozy Tibetan-style bars and teahouses with live music, travelers gather to enjoy traditional music, dance, and storytelling.

I want to revisit Grasslands in Shangri-La
#grassland
The grasslands of Napa Lake in Shangri-La are a beautiful and ecologically rich area, particularly popular for their scenic landscapes and biodiversity. Located about 8 kilometers from the city of Shangri-La in Yunnan province, Napa Lake is a seasonal lake that fills during the rainy season and recedes during the dry months, transforming the area into expansive grasslands.
In the summer and autumn, the grasslands are lush and green, providing grazing land for local Tibetan herders and their yaks, horses, and sheep. The grassland is dotted with Tibetan nomadic tents, creating a picturesque scene of traditional Tibetan life. Wildflowers bloom in the grasslands during this time, adding vibrant colors to the landscape.
Napa Lake is also a haven for wildlife, particularly migratory birds. During the winter months, the lake attracts flocks of black-necked cranes, an endangered species, along with other birds like bar-headed geese and ruddy shelducks, making it a great spot for birdwatching.
Visitors to Napa Lake Grassland can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, and cycling through the area. The wide open spaces, set against a backdrop of distant snow-capped mountains and vast skies, create a peaceful and serene atmosphere, perfect for those looking to experience the natural beauty and traditional culture of Shangri-La.

Living in My Dream of Canola Flower Field in Shangri-La
#flowerblossom
The canola flower fields in Shangri-La are a breathtaking sight, especially during the blooming season in late spring and early summer (typically from June to early July). These fields, also known as rapeseed flower fields, create vast expanses of bright yellow blooms that contrast beautifully with the surrounding green hills and snow-capped mountains.
Located in the Tibetan region of Yunnan, Shangri-La’s canola fields are spread across the countryside, with some of the most famous areas being in the Napa Lake region and near local Tibetan villages. The combination of golden flowers, traditional Tibetan homes, and the distant peaks of the Hengduan Mountains offers a picturesque and serene landscape.
The fields not only attract tourists and photographers but also serve as an important agricultural crop for the locals. Visitors can enjoy walking through the fields, taking photos, and immersing themselves in the peaceful and scenic environment. The bloom coincides with a relatively mild climate, making it an ideal time to explore the natural beauty of Shangri-La.

Newbie travel guide: Shangri-La pitfall avoidance tips.
Transportation pitfall avoidance
1. If you choose to fly to Shangri-La, it is best to book your flight in advance, as flight prices may increase during peak season. Also, pay attention to the on-time rate of the flight to avoid delays affecting your itinerary.
2. There are many bus routes from Lijiang or Dali to Shangri-La, but be sure to choose a reputable bus company and avoid taking black cars. Black cars may have safety risks and opaque pricing, making it easy to be overcharged.
3. There are relatively few taxis in Shangri-La city, so it may be difficult to hail a taxi. Consider using a ride-hailing app or taking a bus. However, pay attention to the bus routes and operating hours to avoid delays in your itinerary.
Accommodation pitfall avoidance
1. Shangri-La has many hotels and guesthouses, but the quality varies. When choosing accommodation, don't just look at the price, but also consider the location, facilities and service of the hotel. It is best to choose a hotel near Dukezong Ancient Town or in a convenient location, as this will make it easier to get around.
2. Before booking a hotel, you can check other guests' reviews to get an idea of the actual situation. Also, pay attention to whether the hotel provides hot water, heating and other facilities, especially in winter, as these facilities are very important.
3. Some guesthouses may have false advertising, and the actual rooms may not match the pictures. Before booking, you can ask the guesthouse to provide real photos or videos of the rooms to get a better understanding of the room conditions.
Scenic spot pitfall avoidance
1. Inside Dukezong Ancient Town, there are many merchants selling various goods, such as souvenirs and handicrafts. Pay attention to the quality and price of the goods to avoid buying fake or inferior products or being overcharged.
2. The world's largest prayer wheel in Turtle Mountain Park requires multiple people to turn it. When turning the prayer wheel, pay attention to local religious customs and turn it clockwise, not counterclockwise.
3. Pudacuo National Park is large, so it is recommended to plan your itinerary in advance and allocate your time wisely. Also, pay attention to environmental protection and do not litter.
4. Songzanlin Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist temple. When visiting, please abide by the temple's regulations and respect local religious beliefs and cultural customs. Do not wear overly revealing clothing, and do not make loud noises or take photos inside the temple.
Food pitfall avoidance
1. Shangri-La's cuisine is mainly Tibetan-style, such as yak beef hotpot and butter tea. When choosing a restaurant, be sure to choose a reputable restaurant and avoid choosing roadside stalls or small restaurants to avoid food hygiene issues.
2. Yak beef is a specialty of Shangri-La, but it is relatively expensive. When buying yak beef, pay attention to distinguishing between real and fake, and avoid buying fake or inferior products.
3. Butter tea may have a special taste, and not everyone can accept it. When trying butter tea, you can start with a small amount to see if you like it. If you don't like it, you can choose other drinks.
Shopping pitfall avoidance
1. Shangri-La has many specialties, such as yak beef jerky, Tibetan carpets and Tibetan medicine. When buying specialties, be sure to choose a reputable store and avoid buying fake or inferior products.
2. Pay attention to the quality and price of the specialties, and don't be misled by the merchant's false advertising. You can compare prices at multiple stores and choose products with good value for money.
3. When buying Tibetan medicine, choose carefully and preferably under the guidance of a professional. Also, note that Tibetan medicine can be expensive, so don't easily believe the merchant's low-price promotions.
In summary, when traveling to Shangri-La, it is important to plan ahead and understand the local situation to avoid falling into various pitfalls. I hope the above guide will be helpful to you and allow you to have a pleasant journey in Shangri-La.

Take photos of Tibetan architecture along the way. The cost of living here is low, so you can save money and have fun with fewer people.
-
Xiangcheng is like a white pearl lost in the Ganzi River Valley, undisturbed by the world, and therefore, more primitive and simple. The beautiful Tibetan countryside has also been named "One of the 100 Most Beautiful Landscape Shooting Spots in Sichuan" by China National Geographic. This is the filming location of the movie "From Your Whole World", and the white Tibetan houses in the village in the valley are particularly beautiful from the viewing platform.
-
The pictures are real shots of Xiangcheng. We will go again during National Day. Recommended driving route:
10.1: Lijiang Assembly
10.2: Lijiang - Laoyao Mountain - Xiaozhongdian - Shangri-La
10.3: Shangri-La - Bottomless Lake - Shangri-La
10.4: Shangri-La - Birong Grand Canyon - Ranwu Township - Zhongde Township - Xiangcheng
10.5: Xiangcheng - Sangpiling Temple - Selgong Village - Dongwang Grand Canyon - Maowu Grand Canyon - Shangri-La
10.6: Shangri-La - Ganheba - Lijiang
-
In addition to self-driving, we also plan to do some high-altitude light hiking. Recommended hiking gear for this route: windbreaker, windbreaker pants, windbreaker liner, small backpack, hiking shoes, rain gear, hat, headlamp, trekking poles, gloves, knee pads, sunglasses, water bottle, common medicines, sunscreen, mobile phone, camera, enough drinking water.

Stay in a Tibetan-style manor in Shangri-La and be a happy Zhuoma for a day
In August, the rainy season arrives as expected on the Yunnan Plateau. Sunshine and rain alternate, bringing vitality to nature.
Driving with friends, Xiao Mazi took me to Shangri-La Napa Lake, where we stayed in a Tibetan-style manor nestled by the mountains and water. This place is tranquil and ancient, boasting the beautiful scenery of grasslands and lakes, quietly appreciating the uncompetitive beauty of Napa Lake...
On the third floor of the courtyard, there is a 600-square-meter 'Tibetan Private Museum'... Here, you can admire the carving art of Tibetan craftsmen and the Tibetan-style fire pit and stove. You can also change into Tibetan clothes on-site and take photos in the solemn Tibetan-style architecture with a 100% photo success rate.
Shangri-La is at an altitude of 3400m, belonging to the plateau area. The rooms are thoughtfully equipped with diffused oxygen supply, Rhodiola, and glucose, which are very suitable for people like me who suffer from altitude sickness. Even on cloudy days, the ultraviolet rays are strong, so remember to take sun protection measures. The weather is changeable, and it is windy and slightly cool even in summer, so remember to wear a jacket.

✔ Prepare dry clothes, if wet, have clothes to change into
✔ Choose comfortable, durable, non-slip, waterproof hiking shoes
✔ A 20L hiking backpack is sufficient, trekking poles (to save energy and reduce knee injuries), crampons, and gaiters can be rented in the village
✔ Sunscreen, sunglasses, outdoor headscarf, mosquito repellent; women can bring sun repair masks
.
㊙ Professional trekking knowledge
✅ Wear comfortable clothes, preferably well-fitting, not too loose or too tight, and easy to put on and take off when hot or cold. Long hair should be tied up to avoid obstructing vision.
✅ Wear a pair of suitable sports shoes; the shoelaces should be tight but not painful, so your toes won't hurt after long walks.
✅ Protect your knees to avoid patellar injuries and meniscus wear. A small tip is to keep your knees relaxed and slightly bent when walking downhill, not straight.
✅ Take big but slow steps when going uphill, using an outward 8-shaped gait to avoid putting too much pressure on a single knee, and keep your weight on your hips.
✅ Maintain steady breathing and heart rate, don't rush, and keep a stable pace.
.
🌸 Some small tips
✔️ Don't bring a suitcase, or you'll immediately experience a live version of a transformation show
✔️ Altitude sickness is not scary, keep a relaxed mindset, don't wash your hair or take a bath as soon as you reach the plateau, drink plenty of water, eat easily digestible foods rich in vitamin C, and avoid overeating
✔️ Do targeted leg training half a month before departure
✔️ Increase crisis awareness, refuse to act alone, life comes first!
✔️ Give way to mules on the road, they won't give way to you and might squeeze you
✔️ Mushrooms grow abundantly in the rainy season, with many varieties and bright colors, but they are not edible

Shangri-La - Pudacuo National Park - A place where immortals live
1️⃣Preparation: Be sure to check the weather conditions for the day. Bring an umbrella if it rains / prepare for sun protection if it's sunny. Prepare appropriate snacks / water / candies, etc. It is not recommended to bring too many things as it is inconvenient for hiking.
2️⃣Departure: Take a bus / taxi / drive to Pudacuo National Park. (Since everyone's starting point is different, you can directly check the specific route on the navigation software)
3️⃣Ticket Purchase: You can buy tickets on-site or in advance on major online platforms. Generally, a 138 yuan package ticket is purchased (including the park entrance ticket and the park bus). There are also other tickets such as pure hiking / Shudu Lake sightseeing boat tickets (which is the second section of the tour), etc., which can be purchased as needed.
4️⃣Tour: The entire park is currently divided into three sections: Youyou Trail, Shudu Lake, and Bita Lake. There will be park buses included in the 138 yuan package ticket to transfer between each sightseeing spot, and there will be a guide on the bus to introduce the area.
👇
Get on the bus at the park entrance. Bus ride: about 7 minutes.
👇
First Section: Youyou Trail
After getting off the bus, you need to hike a primitive trail in the forest (highly recommended if you can walk, as it has forests, small grasslands, streams, etc.). The entire trail is not paved with boardwalks, it is all gravel and dirt roads.
The guide on the bus said the trail is 2.2 kilometers long (we actually walked 4.66 kilometers, taking 2 hours and 30 minutes. We were quite immersed in this section, running around taking photos, picking mushrooms, resting and eating, etc. If you just walk and take simple photos, it should be much faster).
👇
End of the first section of the Youyou Trail hike.
There is a bus stop at the end, take the bus here to the second section. Bus ride: about 15 minutes.
👇
Second Section: Shudu Lake
There are three ways to tour this section: walk the artificial boardwalk around the lake and forest for pure hiking / buy a separate ticket to take a boat / rent a mountain bike to ride (the end point should be the same, all at the bus stop).
We chose hiking. The scenery is different from the first section, and it is also great for photos. You might encounter sociable little squirrels along the way.
The guide on the bus said the trail is 3.3 kilometers long (we actually walked 4.04 kilometers, taking 1 hour and 20 minutes. We kept it simple in this section, just walking along and occasionally taking photos).
👇
End of the second section of the Shudu Lake hike.
There is a bus stop at the end, take the bus here to the third section. Bus ride: about 40 minutes.
👇
Third Section: Bita Lake
Currently, only a quarter of Bita Lake is open, and it is the easiest section of this tour. The previous routes are all one-way, not returning to the starting point. Bita Lake is a round-trip route, with a total of about 2 kilometers round trip (we only walked a few hundred meters, about half an hour).
👇
End of the third section of the Bita Lake tour.
Return to the place where you got off at Bita Lake, take the bus directly back to the park entrance, and the Pudacuo trip ends here!
Wish everyone a pleasant journey!

Songzanlin, the Little Potala Palace
#summerdestinations
Located in Shangri-La, the Songzanlin Monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in Yunnan Province. Built after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, it's affectionately known as the 'Little Potala Palace'. If a trip to Tibet isn't feasible, Shangri-La is an excellent alternative. This magnificent monastery is home to numerous Buddhist artifacts, Tibetan Buddhist cultural relics, and approximately 700 resident monks.
During my visit, the rain didn't deter me or other visitors from exploring the temples. Please note that photography is restricted in certain areas. I felt fortunate to have experienced the rich Tibetan culture and Buddhist heritage within these sacred walls.
For a seamless journey, I recommend purchasing a combined shuttle bus and entrance ticket. This will allow you to focus on the spiritual essence of the monastery, rather than logistical details.
Abuji Treeking in Shangri La
#summerdestinations
I embarked on a trek to Abuji Lake, situated at an elevation of 4,300 meters above sea level. Although the weather was less than ideal, obscuring the lake's visibility, I thoroughly relished the journey. The trek offered breathtaking scenery, including picturesque valleys, majestic mountains, and meandering rivers, all set amidst a stunning array of wildflowers.
Please note that the trekking infrastructure is still in its developmental stages, making it essential to exercise caution during the wet or rainy season. The ascent takes approximately 2-3 hours, and I recommend hiring a local tour guide available at the entrance gate to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Additionally, be prepared for the absence of toilet facilities along the route, so plan accordingly. Despite the challenges, the trek's natural beauty and serenity make it an unforgettable adventure.
