In South Africa, you can see penguins in two places: the well-known Boulders Beach and the lesser-known Stony Point. I'll discuss the pros and cons of each place and my opinion on what's a must-see and what can be skipped. I'll start with the less popular Stony Point (1-2 photos): It has a paid and a free section. Penguins can be found in the free section, or they can swim across to the paid section. It's a matter of luck. + significantly fewer people + you can see penguins for free + if you head from this spot toward the wineries, the road runs along the very beautiful R44 highway along the ocean - a small penguin colony (essentially the penguins are standing behind a partition, with an equal number of people standing on the other side of the partition with their phones) That's it. Beautiful views, not many penguins. If you're unlucky, you might not see any at all. We didn't go to the paid section, as many people wrote that there was nothing interesting there. My conclusion: if you're passing by, you can stop by. But it's not worth a separate trip. Boulders Beach: There are two entrances: one leads to the beach, the other to the bridges where penguins run. One ticket gets you to both. In my opinion, it's worth visiting both the bridges and the beach. Walk left to the end of the beach, reach the rocks, climb into a gap between the rocks, and walk deeper until you see penguins running within arm's reach. At high tide, you'll likely have to wade through the water. This is the best way to see penguins. It's less crowded here, and the penguins running past are unenclosed. You can even swim next to them. A quiet seaside town with a naval base. Its main attraction is its surroundings. And there are plenty! There are probably two main highlights of the trip: 1) Boulder Beach and the penguin colony that lives there (you can even walk there from the town center; there's a sign on the main road, so you won't get lost). 2) The trip to the Cape of Good Hope takes no more than half an hour by car from the town, with stops along the way to admire the views. Cape Town’s coastline is truly a masterpiece of nature! But surprisingly, during a whole month in Cape Town in 2025, I didn’t get close to any beach. It’s not that I dislike the sea; I just didn’t have a special reason to go. Speaking of Cape Town’s beaches, from the chilly Atlantic waters to the warm bays of False Bay, each beach has its own unique character. Whether you want to see penguins 🐧, surf 🏄, or just quietly soak up the sun ☀️, there’s always a beach here for you. Here’s a list of 15 must-visit beaches in Cape Town: 1. Boulders This is definitely the “internet-famous” beach and home to African penguins! The water is warm and calm, perfect for swimming. Besides being able to see penguins up close (with respect), the huge granite boulders also block the sea breeze. You don’t need a ticket to view from the outside, but if you want to get close to the penguins, you need to buy one. I forgot the ticket price, but personally, I think it’s unnecessary because in the evening the penguins walk out onto the street and you can see them then. 2. Llandudno Located at the end of a winding road, surrounded by massive granite rocks, the scenery is stunning. There are no shops here, and the vibe is laid-back, making it a favorite for surfers and locals. Although the water is bone-chilling cold, jumping in on a hot summer day is super refreshing! Remember to bring your own picnic food. 3. Beta at Bakoven A hidden little bay in Bakoven. There are almost no waves, and the water is clear and tranquil, perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). It’s also a great spot to avoid the Southeaster wind and is very photogenic! 4. Water’s Edge A secret base in Simon’s Town, right next to Boulders but much less crowded. You enter through a wooden gate, offering great privacy. There are many rock pools for kids to explore, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a few penguins too. 5. Clifton Featuring four fine white sandy beaches, Clifton 2nd is the most popular. It’s sheltered from the wind, and the water is neon blue (though very cold!), making it a hotspot for fashionistas, models, and family gatherings. In summer, there are vendors selling ice pops on the beach, adding to the lively atmosphere. 6. Long Beach (Kommetjie) A super long white sandy beach stretching all the way to Noordhoek. It’s a paradise for dog walking and surfing. If you’re fit, you can hike to the Kakapo shipwreck site for a visit. For swimming, it’s recommended to go to the nearby Die Kom tidal pool. 7. Fish Hoek An underrated treasure beach! It has some of the warmest water in Cape Town, perfect for swimming. The facilities are well-equipped with changing rooms and lifeguards, plus there’s a scenic Jager’s Walk trail, ideal for family outings with all ages.
