In South Africa, you can see penguins in two places: the well-known Boulders Beach and the lesser-known Stony Point. I'll discuss the pros and cons of each place and my opinion on what's a must-see and what can be skipped. I'll start with the less popular Stony Point (1-2 photos): It has a paid and a free section. Penguins can be found in the free section, or they can swim across to the paid section. It's a matter of luck. + significantly fewer people + you can see penguins for free + if you head from this spot toward the wineries, the road runs along the very beautiful R44 highway along the ocean - a small penguin colony (essentially the penguins are standing behind a partition, with an equal number of people standing on the other side of the partition with their phones) That's it. Beautiful views, not many penguins. If you're unlucky, you might not see any at all. We didn't go to the paid section, as many people wrote that there was nothing interesting there. My conclusion: if you're passing by, you can stop by. But it's not worth a separate trip. Boulders Beach: There are two entrances: one leads to the beach, the other to the bridges where penguins run. One ticket gets you to both. In my opinion, it's worth visiting both the bridges and the beach. At the bridges, you can watch the penguins and dasies; they'll be within arm's reach behind the fence (photos 3-4). At the end of the path are observation platforms from which you can observe the colony. There are a lot of penguins, but there are just as many people. But still, it's worth it. Another path leads to the beach (photos 5-6): When you go down, it will look like an ordinary beach with people swimming. Walk left to the end of the beach, reach the rocks, climb into a gap between the rocks, and walk deeper until you see penguins running within arm's reach. At high tide, you'll likely have to wade through the water. This is the best way to see penguins. It's less crowded here, and the penguins running past are unenclosed. You can even swim next to them. It's not just a beautiful beach – it's known primarily for its colony of African penguins, which can be seen literally a few meters away from people. 🐧 The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) is the only penguin species that breeds on the African continent. These birds are flightless, but they are excellent swimmers, and their funny calls once resembled the braying of a donkey, earning them the nickname "jackass penguins." The penguins arrived at Boulders Beach in the early 1980s, when a pair of birds first settled on the shore. Since then, their colony has grown from two pairs to several thousand birds, making this a unique wildlife viewing destination. The name "Boulders" comes from the enormous granite boulders that have been shaped by water and wind for thousands of years. They form secluded bays and coves with gently sloping sandy shores and protected, warm water. These coves are where penguins enjoy swimming, even safely. Boulder Beach in Cape Town is one of the most unusual places where you can see penguins in the wild. But there’s a catch that not everyone knows about. To get directly onto the beach, you need to put in a bit of effort: make your way over large rocks, walk through knee-deep water in some places, and in others literally crawl or carefully climb down between boulders. It’s a kind of mini adventure before meeting the penguins. When you finally reach the beach itself, you end up very close to them. They lie calmly on the sand, wander around, and sometimes go into the water. But it’s worth keeping in mind: there may not be many penguins there — in my case, there were only a few, around five. There’s also another, easier option — the viewing platform. From there, you get a view from above, and there are usually significantly more penguins. You can observe the whole colony at once, but from a distance. ✨ Bottom line: — if you want a close-up experience and a bit of adventure → go to the beach itself — if you want to see lots of penguins without a difficult route → choose the viewing platform Either way, it’s a unique experience — being so close to wildlife in this kind of setting.

It's their home, where we're allowed in under certain conditions. This bay is located just 40 minutes from Cape Town, in the Simon's Town area. It's easy to get to, and the experience will last a lifetime. What awaits you: • Wooden boardwalks over the beach—you can observe penguin life without disturbing them. They nest in the bushes, preen their feathers, have squabbles, and adorable feed their chicks (if it's the right season). • Swimming—the main beach with the penguins is open, but there's also a nearby beach (Foxy Beach), where you can swim in the company of these flightless but excellent divers. • Amazing soundscapes – instead of seagulls, you'll hear their loud, donkey-like braying (yes, that's why they used to be called "donkey penguins"). This place is a rare example of how tourism and conservation coexist in harmony. The penguins here aren't afraid of people, but it's important to keep your distance and not try to touch them. The place in my photo is part of the famous penguin area near Boulders Beach, inside Table Mountain National Park, a protected coastal zone where wildlife and marine ecosystems are carefully preserved.  Located on the Cape Peninsula in Cape Town, this marine protected area sits just outside the historic naval town of Simon’s Town, overlooking the calm waters of False Bay.  To reach it from central Cape Town, drive about one hour south along the spectacular Cape Peninsula coast. The most common route follows the scenic coastal road past Kalk Bay before arriving in Simon’s Town. From there, signs lead to the entrance on Kleintuin Road. Travelers without a car can take the coastal train from Cape Town Station to Simon’s Town and then walk around 30 minutes through the charming seaside town to the park entrance.  The area is world-famous for its colony of African penguins, small black-and-white seabirds that live here year-round. These endangered penguins waddle along the beach, nest among the dunes, and swim in the clear waters of False Bay. Wooden boardwalks allow visitors to observe them closely without disturbing their habitat.  Beyond the penguins, the surrounding marine protected area is rich in wildlife. The ocean around the Cape Peninsula hosts seals, kelp forests, colorful reef fish and seasonal marine giants. During the winter months, visitors sometimes spot southern right whales migrating along the coast, especially in nearby bays and viewpoints along the peninsula. You open your eyes, and outside the window, a few meters from the terrace, the main neighbors are already waddling. African penguins have gone out for their morning stroll and are clearly waiting for you to come out with coffee. Only nine rooms, quiet, fresh croissants, and the complete feeling that you're not in a hotel, but visiting friends with impeccable taste.
