I based in Humenné, bus to Remetské Hámre 07:30, walked the lake lane, climbed Vihorlat (2 hrs). The moss on the Morské Oko viewing deck was black-green with fog-drip, ate a 4 EUR Humenné syreň+horčica, watched the tarn mirror the beech crown at 09:30 — 10 min of stillness before wind. Mistake: I arrived 13:00 in Aug — afternoon thunderstorm, the Vihorlat ridge greased; 07:00–08:00 start, out by noon. Another: EUR cash, Remetské Hámre no ATM. You can see Ľubovňa Castle looming on its hill overlooking the town of Stará Ľubovňa from miles away in all directions. It’s a really impressive edifice that bears the marks of a cosmopolitan series of owners: from its origins in The 13th century, these have included Hungarian kings, Polish and Habsburg nobles and, latterly, the Zamoyski family. During the Swedish invasion of Poland, the Polish crown jewels were secretly brought here and kept between 1655 and 1661. Later, in 1768, the adventurer Móric Beňovský was imprisoned here before embarking on the extraordinary career that would eventually make him ruler of Madagascar. As you follow the (somewhat complicated) route around the castle, you may be lucky enough to catch a falconry display, or get the opportunity to try on some armour. Don’t forget to climb up the high tower- the views of the surrounding countryside are phenomenal. Below the castle lies the Ľubovňa Skansen, an open-air museum created in 1985. Its collection of traditional wooden houses, farm buildings and workshops offers a more intimate portrait of life in the Upper Spiš region than the other Skansen-style museums I’ve visited: A lot of the houses hold photographs and pen portraits of their original owners, which gives the experience a poignancy I haven’t experienced before. It’s one thing to visit Ján Lazarik’s historic garage, and quite another to see him posing proudly with the same Trabant on the back wall. Top tips: 1. Getting here using public transport is quite challenging: From Kežmarok station, take the little red train for €4.80 each and travel the 45 minutes to Stará Ľubovňa. BUT: The castle is another 25 minutes or so on foot up the hill on the outskirts of town. 2. Tickets for the castle cost €10 and the Skansen costs €6, but you can buy a combined ticket for the two at the discounted rate of €13. You’ll be kept busy for two or three hours, so although this might seem pricey in my opinion it’s worth the money. 3. If you have the time and an interest in military history, a visit to the Michal Strenk Exhibition (€7) might round off your day.
