Hikosan Shrine is the only shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture. The Hoheiden and copper torii gate are nationally designated Important Cultural Properties. From the copper torii gate, you can reach Hikosan Shrine by climbing over 300 stone steps along the approach. The main shrine is about an hour and a half's walk from the Hoheiden. It's located at the summit of Mount Hiko, so you probably won't be able to get there in casual clothing. Up the stairs next to the Hoheiden is Shimotsumiya Shrine, where visitors likely leave Tengu figurines. It's so charming I couldn't help but take a photo. Mount Hiko is known as one of Japan's three great mountains for ascetic practices. The many lodgings for ascetic monks who practice here remain along the approach, which was very interesting.
