The road itself is free, open late May–early October (check vegvesen.no—snow can delay). I drove Åndalsnes→Trollstigen at 07:30 in June (NOK 200 parking at the top plateau, card only), walked the cantilevered viewing terrace, then continued over Ørnevegen to Geiranger. The "mossy road" isn't the asphalt—it's the seep ledges beside Stigfossen (the 240 m waterfall the road switchbacks past) where Cratoneuron and Brachythecium hold green on the gneiss even in a dry August. I hiked the 3 km Stigfossen trail from the lower car park to the falls base at 08:00, spray soaking the moss, zero tour buses yet. Ørnevegen's 7 hairpins drop to the Geiranger lookout—stop at the Flydalsjuvet pull-off, not just the signed Eagle Bend, for the mossy cliff away from coaches. Mistake: I drove it at 13:00 in July and met a tour coach on hairpin 6—no passing for 10 min. Before 09:00 or after 17:00. Another: I trusted "free road" and forgot the Åndalsnes city toll (AutoPASS, ~NOK 40 later on the rental invoice). Would you drive Trollstigen northbound from Åndalsnes and hit Ørnevegen for the Geiranger descent, or reverse it and do Eagle Road first for the morning light on the fjord?

Only had half a day in Geiranger, so I tried to make the most of it! 💦 Waterfall Walk Spent around 1 hour walking to the waterfall and back. A short but refreshing walk, with beautiful scenery along the way. 🚌 Geiranger Skywalk Then joined a 2-hour bus tour up to the famous Skywalk. The views from the top were absolutely stunning — mountains, fjords and waterfalls all in one view! 🤯 ⚠️ My biggest regret: I missed Flydalsjuvet and Eagle Road! 😭 If you're only spending a few hours in Geiranger, make sure you plan your route carefully. There are so many incredible viewpoints around the fjord, and it's easy to miss some when you're short on time. 📌 My tip: If you have limited time, prioritise the viewpoints you really want to see before booking your transport/tour.
