Sweden Kiruna Björkliden Lapporten Valley Mossy Tundra Ridgeeasytravelpost
#easytravelpost Lapporten ("The Reindeer Gate") is the U-shaped notch framing Kebnekaise, viewed from Björkliden's southern lip. I took Norrtåg to Björkliden (SEK 250 from Kiruna), slept at Hotel Fjället (~SEK 1,400/night), rode the summer chairlift to the mid-station (SEK 150 one-way, card, 10–16 Jul–Aug), then walked the unmarked cliff path 4 km to the rim. The mossy half is the first 1.5 km along the southern lip where Racomitrium pads the tundra and Sphagnum sits in the snow-patch hollows at 900 m — fog off Torneträsk till 8:30, Lapporten framed by the notch by 9.
The chairlift cuts 300 m of climb; the cliff walk above is cairns + open fell, no rope.
Mistake: I rode the lift at 14:00 in August — rim wind 55 km/h, fog in the notch, Lapporten invisible, SEK 150 for a white-out. 8 a.m. Second mistake: I trusted the "easy cliff walk" blog — above the lift line it's unmarked, fog rolled in at 10, cairns vanished, backtracked by GPS, 40 min of sweat. Carry a compass. Third: I expected card at the Björkliden lift — SEK 150 card fine, but the Hotel Fjället bar (SEK 75 kaffe) is card, the mountain-hut honour box coins only.
Buy in Björkliden: a SEK 75 kaffe + kanelbulle, not the SEK 295 lift-top plate. Gear: 2 L water, SEK 1,200 boots, SEK 700 shell — 900 m, 5°C.
Local rule: chairlift SEK 150 card, no permit for the cliff walk, stay on cairns, no drone (near Abisko NP buffer), the tundra moss is 200 yrs old not a seat.
Opinion: Lapporten is the SEK 150 chairlift view that beats any Kebnekaise summit ticket, and the mossy southern lip 1.5 km off the lift is the 20-min half with zero Torneträsk-lakeside crowd. Would you ride a summer chairlift to 900 m for a mossy tundra frame of the Reindeer Gate?
