A great place to enjoy bamboo in September. Stop fighting crowds at popular spots! Jiangxi hides a 100,000-mu bamboo forest, with a 30-yuan admission ticket and Asia's longest glass water slide that lets you zoom down from the treetops. Hello everyone, I'm Orange🍊. I've been traveling around Jiangxi for over a decade. Every year at the beginning of September, my inbox gets flooded with the same question: "Summer is almost over, is there anywhere that's cool, exciting, and cheap?" In the past, I would have recommended Yifeng or Jishan. But this year, I have only one answer—Baishuixian in Suichuan. It has a 100,000-mu bamboo forest, 15 waterfalls, and a 3,043-meter glass water slide that claims to be the longest in Asia. The average temperature from July to September is only 22°C. The most incredible part? The admission ticket is only 30 yuan. It's a 1-hour drive from Ganzhou and 1.5 hours from Ji'an. You can also get there by high-speed train and a shuttle bus. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about eating, staying, traveling, and playing at Baishuixian. If you want to catch the tail end of summer without wasting money, this is the only guide you need. 1. Why is September the best time to visit Baishuixian? Baishuixian is located in Bizhou Town, Suichuan County. It is a national AAA-rated scenic spot and a provincial-level scenic area, having been named a "China Forest Oxygen Bar" in 2016. The core area covers 5,000 mu, with 100,000 mu of bamboo forests spreading along the mountains and 15 waterfalls distributed at different altitudes. Visiting in September gets you three benefits. First, the temperature is just right. The official data for summer heat relief is an average of 22°C from July to September, but September feels completely different from July—the mugginess of summer has dissipated, and there's even a slight chill in the mountains in the morning and evening, so you won't feel stifled while walking the waterfall trails. Second, the waterfalls still have plenty of water. April to June is the high-water season, but the waterfall cluster in September is still impressive. The 86-meter-drop Fairy Waterfall crashes down from the cliff top, creating a mist, and there's a high chance of seeing a rainbow after the rain. Third, it's really uncrowded. Baishuixian is not as well-known as Lushan or Sanqingshan, so tour groups basically don't come here. You can walk on the bamboo forest trail for half an hour without running into many people, and you don't have to wait in long lines for the glass slide. 2. How to get there? High-speed train + shuttle bus works Driving (recommended): Navigate to "Baishuixian Scenic Area," take the Suichuan exit on the Da-Guang Expressway, and drive along County Road 821 for about 5 kilometers to arrive. The scenic area has a free parking lot. High-speed train + shuttle bus: Take the train to Ji'an West Station, transfer to a long-distance bus to the county seat, and then transfer to a shuttle bus heading toward Bizhou Town. It's a bit more troublesome, but it's doable. County bus: There is a tourist shuttle in Suichuan County, which is free on weekends and holidays, with departures at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 1:30 PM, and 3:30 PM. If you go on a weekend, you can even save on travel costs. 3. Admission ticket: 30 yuan, unbelievably affordable The admission ticket is 30 yuan per person. Locals in Suichuan County get free admission, and students and seniors get half-price tickets. For comparison: Yixing Bamboo Sea is 70 yuan, Nanshan Bamboo Sea is 90 yuan, and Anji Bamboo Sea is over 100 yuan during peak season. Baishuixian is 30 yuan and includes 15 waterfalls and Asia's longest glass water slide. The glass water slide requires a separate ticket; sales stop at 4:00 PM, so be sure to plan your time in advance if you want to ride it. 4. Core activities: 3 must-dos 1. Hike the waterfall cluster and look up at the 86-meter Fairy Waterfall Enter the scenic area from Wangxian Gate and head up along the Xunxian Trail; the waterfalls are distributed in four levels. The Dengxian Waterfall is 23 meters high and is the first "greeting," with water splashing onto the rock steps and creating a large mist. Further ahead is the Pearl Waterfall, where water droplets scatter like fine beads on the rocks, looking like scattered silver in the sunlight. Further up is the Yujie Waterfall, which folds down along the rock face in layers. The grand finale is the Fairy Waterfall. With an 86-meter drop and several meters in width, a white ribbon of water falls straight from the cliff top to the valley floor, with a rainbow faintly visible in the mist. Standing on the viewing platform and looking up, the wind blows the mist onto your face, and the chill seeps in through your pores. 2. 3,043-meter glass water slide, zoom down from the treetops This is Baishuixian's star attraction. It is 3,043 meters long with a 140-meter drop, built with fully transparent, high-strength tempered glass, and the ride takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Get on a raft and slide down from the mountainside with the water flow. The first half weaves through the bamboo forest, with bamboo on both sides brushing past your head; the middle section speeds up, with wind filling your ears and water splashing on your face; the final section is a direct dive, with your heart rate dropping along with the slope. Reminder: You will get soaked, so bring a change of clothes. Those afraid of heights should be cautious, but the slide is a glass trough close to the ground, not a suspension bridge, so the actual thrill is more controllable than you might imagine. 3. Take a slow walk on the bamboo forest trail and cleanse your lungs Baishuixian has 100,000 mu of bamboo forests. Walking on the trail, you have bamboo crowns blocking the sky above and a soft path paved with fallen leaves under your feet. The sound of the wind passing through the bamboo forest and the roar of the waterfalls appear alternately, and your whole rhythm will unconsciously slow down. The "Yixiantian" (A Thread of Sky) is hidden deep in the bamboo forest, 200 meters deep, allowing only one person to pass sideways, making it a hidden gem section of the bamboo forest trek. 5. Eating and accommodation guide: What's it like to stay in a bamboo forest? Stay: Shanxi Diesu is the top choice The scenic area's own Shanxi Diesu is right next to the visitor center, featuring detached bamboo forest villas where you can see waterfalls when you open the window. The rooms are equipped with smart voice control and smart toilets, costing 300–500 yuan/night. Breakfast is a special nine-grid set, which many guests describe as "great value for money." If you have a limited budget, homestays in Bizhou Town cost 150–250 yuan/night and offer great value. The landlady of "Baishu Renjia" in the village cooks excellent dishes, and rooms are often hard to book during holidays. Eat: Shuixian Restaurant + snack market The Shuixian Restaurant inside the scenic area is the officially recommended dining spot, and you can eat local specialties at the Baishuixian snack market. Suichuan is the origin of Gougunao tea; having a cup of local tea with a bowl of hot soup after finishing the waterfall trail is especially comfortable. 6. Two days and one night, Baishuixian + surrounding loop Day 1: Full day of fun at Baishuixian Arrive in the morning, walk the waterfall cluster trail first, and check in at Dengxian Waterfall, Pearl Waterfall, and Fairy Waterfall in order. Eat lunch at Shuixian Restaurant. In the afternoon, take the glass water slide down the mountain, and return to the homestay for a shower after getting soaked. In the evening, take a slow walk on the bamboo forest trail and wait for the sunset. Stay at Shanxi Diesu at night and fall asleep to the sound of the stream. Day 2: Surrounding hidden gems + return trip If you have enough time, there are several classic routes in Suichuan that you can connect. Go to Tanghu Tea Tourism Town to soak in hot springs and visit Shentagu, or go to Taoyuan Terraced Fields to see the autumn colors; these are all high-quality routes recommended by local officials. Eat a meal of local Suichuan food at noon and return in the afternoon. 7. Old K's insider tips 1. Bring a full change of clothes: You will get soaked on the glass slide, so prepare everything from inside to out. 2. Wear non-slip shoes: The waterfall trails and bamboo forest stone steps have moss, which is especially slippery after rain. 3. A light jacket is a must: The temperature in the mountains is below 22°C in the morning and evening, and you will feel even colder after getting wet on the waterfall trail. 4. Buy slide tickets before 4:00 PM: Sales stop after this time, so don't make a wasted trip. 5. Don't skimp on mosquito repellent: In a 100,000-mu bamboo forest, the mosquitoes are no joke. 6. Best to visit after rain: The Fairy Waterfall has the most water after rain, and the chance of seeing a rainbow is highest. 7. Slow down when driving: County Road 821 has many curves, so it's safer to drive during the day. 8. Recommended side trips: If you have enough time, Suichuan's Taoyuan Terraced Fields, Tanghu Hot Springs, and Gougunao Tea Plantation can be connected into a classic three-day route. Final thoughts Baishuixian isn't a "trendy" tourist spot. It has no cable cars, no small trains, and no overpriced shops. It's just 100,000 mu of bamboo, 15 waterfalls, a glass water slide that lets you zoom down from the treetops, and a 30-yuan admission ticket. Summer is almost over, but the 22°C in the mountains is still waiting for you. I'm Orange🍊, a seasoned traveler who is always on the road. Choose mountain guesthouses for a quieter experience. 📅 Detailed 5-day, 4-night itinerary (all CCTV featured spots) Day 1 City cultural route: Bailuzhou Academy + Jizhou Kiln | CCTV cultural check-in 📜🏺 Morning: Bailuzhou Academy (free, closed Mondays, bring ID) Filming location for CCTV4’s "Traveling China," a millennium-old academy in the center of the Gan River, where Wen Tianxiang studied. Hunan’s seriously underrated summer retreat, I highly recommend Guidong County in Chenzhou. It’s the highest-altitude county seat in Hunan, with an average elevation of 900 meters. The average summer temperature is just 23℃, earning it the nickname “natural air-conditioned city,” and it’s almost untouched by commercialization. This is a 3-day, 2-night in-depth travel guide, perfect for a leisurely self-drive trip: 🚗 Transportation guide · Self-drive: the top choice. About 4 hours from Changsha via Wushen Expressway. The mountain roads have many curves but are in good condition. · High-speed rail: take the train to Chenzhou West Station, then rent a car or take a bus to Guidong (about 2 hours). 🏠 Accommodation suggestions Stay in Oujiang Town in the county seat for convenience and coolness (no air conditioning needed). We recommend a guesthouse with a balcony where you can see the sea of clouds right outside the window. Be sure to book at least a week in advance for weekends. 🗺️ 3-day, 2-night highlights itinerary · Day 1: stroll the county seat & panoramic views Arrive in the afternoon and visit Santai Mountain Forest Park (free). The ancient trees provide plenty of shade. At dusk, climb Wenfeng Tower to watch the sunset and enjoy the county’s panoramic view. For dinner, try local dried yellow mushrooms and stir-fried kidney beans with pork. · Day 2: alpine grasslands & sunrise sea of clouds Early morning, drive 1 hour to Wanyang Mountain Acacia Grassland (ticket about 30 yuan). This alpine meadow offers rolling sea of clouds like a fairyland. Bring a picnic mat and relax all day facing the wind turbines. On the way back at dusk, stop by Oucai Reservoir to see the deep blue water known as “Hunan’s little Qinghai Lake.” · Day 3: creek trekking & local specialties shopping In the morning, visit Qiyun Peak National Forest Park to find a clear creek for wading. The water is icy cold. In the afternoon, buy Guidong Linglong tea or local kidney beans as souvenirs, then head home. 💡 Key reminders · Bring a jacket: the temperature difference between day and night is huge. A light down jacket or windbreaker will definitely come in handy for stargazing at night. · Moisture protection: the mountain area is very humid. Guesthouses usually have electric blankets—turn them on for a while before bed to dehumidify. · Avoid weekends: if your schedule is flexible, we strongly recommend visiting on weekdays to enjoy the peaceful “exclusive” experience. 🍜 Food highlights For breakfast, don’t miss handmade glutinous rice cakes. For main meals, try the alpine vegetables (sweeter than those in the city) and spicy blood duck. If you have extra time, you can also visit nearby Yanling or Suichuan in Jiangxi for a combined trip. Want me to plan a route connecting these places? I’d be happy to help. 😊

When it comes to summer escapes in Hunan, everyone rushes to Zhangjiajie or Xiangxi, often overlooking Chenzhou’s Guidong County, named by National Geographic as the “cool zone of the south.” It’s the highest-altitude small city in Hunan, with an average summer temperature of just 23.6℃—a true natural air-conditioned haven. This guide is tailored for deep summer travelers who want more than just a quick visit. Why is it so underrated? · The data speaks: negative oxygen ion levels reach up to 150,000/cm³ (far exceeding fresh air standards), earning it the title “China’s oxygen capital.” · Unique experience: here, you need a blanket to sleep on summer nights, and in the early morning, you can watch the sea of clouds rolling beneath your feet. · -- 3-day 2-night essential itinerary (focused on calm and cool) Day 1: Arrival and first impressions · Morning: Take the high-speed train to Chenzhou West Station, then charter a car or take a bus to Guidong (about 2.5 hours). As the altitude rises, keep the car windows closed and the AC off because the outside air is already cool. · Afternoon: Check into a hotel in the county seat, then walk to Santai Mountain Park, where ancient trees form a dense canopy. Locals relax under the shade, fanning themselves. · Night: Must-try Guidong yellow glutinous rice cake (fried or boiled in soup), chewy and soft. Day 2: The core secret spot—Qiyun Mountain · All day: Charter a car to Qiyun Mountain (the third highest peak in Hunan). Instead of a strenuous summit hike, stroll along the edge of the alpine meadow to watch wind turbines spinning in the mist. For lunch, enjoy cold mountain fish at a farmhouse restaurant at 1,200 meters altitude—the fish is firm and fresh. · Evening: Stay in a forest cabin guesthouse at the mountain’s base, falling asleep to the sound of pine waves. Day 3: A refreshing finish · Early morning: Visit the Ou River to see the morning mist. The water is chillingly cool. Buy a few pounds of local highland yellow peaches (ripe in late July), crisp, sweet, and juicy. · Afternoon: Leisurely return trip. · -- Exclusive deep experiences (avoid the crowds) · Sunrise at Qing’e Mountain: less crowded than Qiyun Mountain. Depart at 4 AM, drive halfway up, then hike 40 minutes to see golden dawn above the sea of clouds. · Visit the farmers’ market “Gan Naozi”: on lunar calendar days ending in 1 or 6, the market opens. Buy wild kiwis and highland dried radishes, and experience the locals’ cool daily life. · -- Transportation and accommodation tips · Transport: No direct flights. After arriving at Chenzhou West by high-speed train, renting a car is highly recommended. Attractions are scattered, and mountain roads offer stunning views. · Accommodation: For quiet stays, choose guesthouses around Qiyun Mountain; for convenience, stay at Linglongwang Hotel in the county seat. · Must-eat list: Besides yellow glutinous rice cake, try stewed pork tripe with red beans (moisture-removing) and highland fermented tofu (perfect with porridge). · -- Pitfalls and reminders · Sunscreen is essential: it feels cool, but UV rays are strong. Be sure to apply sunscreen. · Bring a light jacket: temperature differences between morning and night are big. Wearing short sleeves by the river in the evening can be chilly. · Avoid weekends: locals also head to the mountains to escape the heat, so weekday visits offer a better experience. Finally, the beauty of Guidong isn’t in any single attraction but in the cool breeze through your open window, mosquito-free nights, and the comfort of eating hot soup without breaking a sweat. If you’re tired of checklist-style travel, this place will give you the answer. If you have extra time and want to add a cross-province trip to Suichuan, Jiangxi (a neighboring hot spring county), I can adjust the itinerary for you. Just let me know. 😊

1. Luanchuan, Henan In midsummer, Luanchuan is hidden deep in the Funiu Mountains, with an average temperature of 21℃ across the area. The dense forest of Laojun Mountain blocks the scorching sun, and Jiguan Cave’s karst formations maintain a constant 18℃ year-round, instantly cooling you down upon entry. The Chongdugou stream runs through the valley, perfect for barefoot creek trekking and water play. Mountain homestays offer great value. The trails are gentle and suitable for all ages. Far from Henan’s inland heat, this blend of mountains, caves, and streams is a cool summer retreat for the whole family without needing air conditioning. 2. Suichuan, Jiangxi In July and August, Suichuan is surrounded by forest with a steady temperature of 20℃. The Baishuixian Waterfall cascades in layers, and cool mountain springs are everywhere to refresh you. The terraced fields climb the mountains, and the original Hakka villages are quiet and rustic, rarely visited by tour groups. Local specialties like smoked duck and rice snacks are authentic. The mountain roads are smooth for driving, and you can enjoy both hiking for fresh air and creekside water play. Avoid the crowds of Lushan and Wuyuan and savor the pristine, refreshing slow pace of western Jiangxi’s mountains. 3. Mile, Yunnan Mile’s summer climate is mild and comfortable, with highs not exceeding 25℃. The Dongfengyun red brick art castle is surrounded by flower fields, perfect for photos. The dense forest of Jinping Mountain is tranquil, and natural hot springs offer soothing summer baths. The lake and spring ecological park has cool evening breezes. Street food like marinated chicken and local wine are affordable and delicious. The city pace is relaxed, avoiding the crowds of Dali and Lijiang. Explore the art town and breathe mountain air in this lesser-known, refreshing eastern Yunnan getaway. 4. Yichang, Hubei From July to September, the Three Gorges canyon in Yichang creates a natural cooling barrier, with temperatures 6–8℃ lower than the plains. The Qingjiang Gallery’s clear waters wind through the landscape. Take a boat cruise along the green mountains, feeling the cool mist on your face. The Three Gorges Waterfall is spectacular during high water, with mist filling the air. The hiking trail is shaded by trees all the way. The Tujia stilt houses of the Three Gorges people stand by the water, and fresh fish from the Yangtze River is affordable and tasty. Combining natural beauty and culture, Yichang is a top choice for a short summer drive and water sightseeing in central China. 5. Leye, Baise, Guangxi In midsummer, Leye’s high altitude keeps the climate cool and comfortable. The Dashiwei tiankeng (sinkhole) group is vast, with underground caves maintaining a constant cool temperature. Bamboo rafts float along the Buliu River through the karst peaks. The mountains are lush with plants and rich in negative ions. The Zhuang villages have simple, friendly customs, and local specialties like cured meat and oil tea have unique flavors. The area is barely commercialized, with few tourists and a quiet atmosphere. The sinkholes, lakes, and forests blend into a little-known, pristine cool secret in northern Guangxi. 6. Genhe, Inner Mongolia Known as China’s cold pole, Genhe has an average temperature of only 17℃ in July and August. The vast original birch forest blocks the summer heat. The Oroqen tribe offers close encounters with reindeer. Streams in the forest are icy and clear. Nights require a light jacket, and the starry sky is bright and clear. Local northeast-style iron pot stews use fresh ingredients. Few city tourists visit. Forest hiking and visiting the reindeer tribe let you experience the ultimate cool forest scenery unique to northern Xinjiang. 7. Markang, Sichuan In summer and autumn, Markang’s highland valleys are dry and cool, with an average temperature of 20℃. The Zhuokeji Tibetan village’s watchtowers are built into the mountains, and the Xisuo homes have a warm, lived-in feel. Surrounding alpine meadows bloom with wildflowers, and the Suomo River flows through town. Evening strolls by the river are pleasant with cool breezes. Tibetan butter tea and Tibetan fragrant pork are authentic and affordable. Compared to Jiuzhaigou, the crowds are sparse. The roads are smooth, ideal for self-driving in western Sichuan. This is a one-stop cool, slow trip with Tibetan villages, mountains, and valleys. 8. Huize, Yunnan In July and August, Huize’s high altitude creates a comfortably cool summer. The vast meadows of Dahai Grass Mountain are covered with gesang flowers. Alpine lakes are clear and bright, with windmills stretching along the ridges. The ancient city’s Ming and Qing guild halls have a strong historic atmosphere. Local dishes like potatoes and lamb soup are affordable and tasty. Attractions are spread out and uncrowded. Hike the meadows for fresh air and watch sunsets by the lake. Avoid the busy western Yunnan spots. This quiet, lesser-known highland town combines grasslands, lakes, and culture for a refreshing getaway.

⛰️How amazing can a group tour be? It wasn’t until I stood in front of the “cave” at Taoyuan terraced fields that I understood what “there’s always a higher mountain” means. 🏨The hotel looks like a cluster of irregular rocks growing wildly among the greenery, as if it’s sprouted from the mountain itself. Walking through the small garden into the room, I was instantly amazed by the space. Two 1.8-meter beds spread out boldly. The bathroom has a dry and wet separation and a bathtub with a round glass window for mountain views🛁. When soaking, you can look up and see the flowing mountain scenery through the full window. 👭My best friend and I stayed in Cave No. 1, happily taking photos📸 when the group chat exploded. Someone won a two-bedroom suite with a living room, bedroom, and viewing deck—all perfectly set up, practically a mountain retreat tailored for families. Even more “excessive,” the higher you go up the mountain, the more luxurious the rooms get. Turns out the whole mountain is a hotel “blind box”! 🚗There’s seamless shuttle service throughout, from the restaurant to the rooms, from the terraced viewing platform to the light show venue. No struggling with luggage or climbing hills. At night, you fall asleep to the sound of insects and wake up to birdsong. Opening the doors and windows, the rich negative ions feel almost sweet🉐—a deep breath feels like your lungs have been washed by mountain spring water, super refreshing. 🌈Next time, I’ll bring my parents so they can try the “mountaintop luxury blind box” and experience the “wild life” too.🤭

Suichuan, Ji'an, Jiangxi · Taoyuan Terraces National 4A-level tourist attraction, one of the world's top ten most beautiful terraces. The Hakka people have cultivated over 5,000 mu of terraces over more than 400 years on the Jiaozi Peak mountain range, with a height difference of nearly 1,000 meters, featuring flowing, cloud-like lines. The number of visitors is far fewer than Longji and Yuanyang, making it ideal for a quiet and relaxing experience. Two main photo spots: Wangtian Hill is the highest point, with circular terraced hills resembling white jade plates. The chance of seeing both sunrise and sea of clouds in the early morning is very high, so it is recommended to arrive before 5:30 AM; Panlonghui is in the middle section, where the ridges spiral like a staircase to the sky when mist rolls over, and the layered effect is strongest under the slanting light at dusk. Seasonal highlights: Spring from late March to April is the water-filling period, creating mirror-like reflections of the sky, with the best "Sky Mirror" effect at dawn and dusk; Summer from June to August is lush green with frequent afternoon showers and mist; Autumn from late September to mid-October features golden waves of rice, with the most saturated colors about a week before harvest; Winter from December to January is misty with occasional frost and snow, and the fewest visitors. Transportation: Driving is the only comfortable option. Navigate directly to "Suichuan Taoyuan Terraces Scenic Area." It takes about two and a half hours from Ji'an City and about two hours from Ganzhou. Take the Daguang Expressway to the Suichuan exit, then switch to National Highway G220, followed by a township road. The last 20 kilometers are winding mountain roads with many sharp turns and steep slopes, so honk when necessary. There is a parking lot at the entrance, with overnight parking costing 20 yuan per day. Roads are slippery when wet, so an SUV is recommended, and beginners should drive cautiously. Best shooting times: From 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM when the sea of clouds is thickest and the light is soft; from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM for backlit golden edges and elongated shadows on the ridges. Noon is only suitable for panoramic shots and not recommended for waiting. Accommodation and dining: There are a few simple village homestays inside the scenic area, offering terrace views from the window, costing about 150 to 300 yuan per night. Booking one week in advance is necessary during peak season. Outside the scenic area, it is recommended to stay in Suichuan County town, which offers more options, with standard rooms around 200 yuan. It takes about 40 minutes to drive up the mountain early the next day. Must-try farmhouse dishes include stuffed tofu, cured meat platter, highland rice field fish, and mugwort rice cakes, with an average cost of 40 to 60 yuan per person. Practical tips: Wear non-slip shoes as the ridges are narrow and slippery; bring telephoto and wide-angle lenses; drone flight is limited to 120 meters, and pay attention to no-fly zone signs; the temperature difference on the mountain is large, so bring a light jacket even in summer; there are a few small shops in the village, but it is recommended to bring your own snacks and water; avoid May Day and National Day holidays, with weekends on regular days being the best time to visit.

"Look at that mountain peak, the clouds are rolling up from below." I tried to capture a time-lapse with my phone, but my hands were shaking so much I couldn’t focus at all. The sea of clouds at Huangyangjie gives you no time to prepare; it just rolls up suddenly. To be honest, before coming to Jinggangshan, my expectation was just "a red education base + hiking." But after three days, I realized the natural scenery here is seriously underestimated, especially the sea of clouds and bamboo forest in July, which could be the highlight of any pure nature park. I won’t give you a day-by-day account; instead, here are two routes for you to choose from based on your needs. · —— Route A: Pure Nature, No Red Sites —— Suitable for: Those not very interested in history, just wanting to escape the heat, breathe fresh air, and take great photos Duration: 1.5 days Key spots: Longtan + Bijia Mountain + Huangyangjie Sea of Clouds + Main Peak ▪️ Longtan (3 hours) I covered this in detail in my previous post, so I won’t repeat it here. One little-known fact: July is the wettest month in Jinggangshan, and the Longtan Waterfall is at its fullest, with a 67-meter drop. The water column is thicker by a whole ring, and the roar can be heard half a mile away. ▪️ Bijia Mountain Cableway + Hanging Walkway (2 hours) After taking the cableway up, walk the hanging walkway with the original forest canopy beneath your feet. If you’re not in a hurry, take your time. There are three viewing platforms along the way, and the farthest one offers a full view of Wuzhi Peak. ▪️ Main Peak Viewing (1 hour) Jinggangshan’s main peak is 1779.4 meters high, the highest point. On clear summer days, visibility is excellent, and you can see the entire Luoxiao mountain range. The path to the main peak is quite steep, so go according to your ability. ▪️ Huangyangjie Sunrise/Sunset Viewing (1 hour) Sunrise offers a higher chance to see the sea of clouds but requires leaving at 5 a.m., which most people can’t manage. Sunset is the next best option; just get to the top by 4:30 p.m. and wait. · —— Route B: Red Cultural Route, Quality over Quantity —— Suitable for: Those bringing elders or wanting to seriously learn about history Duration: 1 day Key spots: Revolutionary Museum + Martyrs’ Cemetery + Maoping Octagonal Building + Huangyangjie Outpost ▪️ Jinggangshan Revolutionary Museum (2 hours) Free but requires advance reservation. I used to think such museums would be boring, but the exhibits are very thoughtfully done, with many artifacts and video materials—not just a few pictures on the wall. The recreated scene of the "Zhu-Mao Meeting" was especially moving. ▪️ Martyrs’ Cemetery (40 minutes) Climb 109 steps to reach it; the atmosphere is very quiet. It’s recommended to wear plain-colored clothes. ▪️ Maoping Octagonal Building (30 minutes) About 20 minutes by sightseeing bus from Ciping. This is where Mao Zedong wrote "Why the Red Political Power in China Can Exist." The building is small, but the skylight is a perfect octagon, and the light coming through is very special. Nearby, you can also visit Xiangshan Temple and Longjiang Academy. ▪️ Huangyangjie Outpost (40 minutes) Trenches, artillery platforms, and a monument are all concentrated on this mountaintop. · —— Hardcore Itinerary Covering Both Routes —— Three days is just right. Day 1: Route B all day; Day 2: Route A with Longtan in the morning and Bijia Mountain in the afternoon; Day 3: Early start for Huangyangjie sunrise + main peak. 📌 Hardcore Data Tickets: 165 RMB peak season listed price / 160 RMB online purchase, valid for 5 days, covers 21 attractions Sightseeing bus: 70 RMB, unlimited rides for 5 days Longtan cableway: Round trip 70 RMB, recommended to buy a one-way down ticket for 60 RMB and walk up Ji’an West Station → Jinggangshan direct bus: about 1.5 hours Jinggangshan Station → Ciping: about 40 minutes by bus Accommodation 🏨 Huazhu Jinggangshan Xilin Xinju Homestay 150 acres of forest + lakeside villas, unmatched in Jinggangshan. Truly next to a nature reserve, you can hear the stream and birds early in the morning. Perfect for those wanting to experience "wild luxury." 🏨 Jinggangshan Hotel A classic hotel located right in the center of Ciping, steps from the pedestrian street and museum. Has charging stations for new energy vehicles, convenient and reliable, no surprises. 🏨 Elong Ruiyun Jinggangshan Hotel (Tourist Service Center Branch) Buffet breakfast + kids’ playground + surrounded by mountain views, the top choice for families with children. Fast service response, no worries if problems arise. 🏨 Jinggangshan Youjian Wild Luxury Scenic Resort Homestay A standalone villa in Ciping village, balcony facing the valley. At night it’s so quiet you only hear insects chirping, perfect for those who really want to clear their mind.

💦 Who says you can't hike in summer? Jinggangshan is the first to disagree. In July, the average temperature in Jinggangshan is only 23°C, with daytime highs around 28°C, and you still need a blanket at night. The mountains are full of bamboo and trees, providing shade everywhere you go. The streams flow with a soothing sound, making it a hundred times more comfortable than staying in an air-conditioned room! 🌊 My three-day cool water play itinerary Day 1 Waterfall Route: Longtan → Shuikou → Jinshi Face You must see the waterfalls when you come to Jinggangshan! The Longtan Waterfall Group is truly amazing, with five pools and eighteen waterfalls, one after another. Walking down the trail, you encounter a waterfall every few steps, which is a delightful surprise. The first is Biyu Pool, with crystal-clear, jade-green water, like a piece of emerald. Fairy Pool is the most interesting, where the waterfall splits into two streams and then merges again, looking like a fairy dancing—very vivid. ⚠️ Tested tip: Take the cable car down and walk back up to avoid fatigue and enjoy all the scenery. Walking takes about an hour and a half, mostly stairs, which can be tiring. In the afternoon, visit Shuikou Waterfall, also called Rainbow Waterfall. Around 2 PM on a sunny day, sunlight hits the waterfall and creates a rainbow—magical! The pool below is very clear; you can take off your shoes and step into the water, which is icy cold and instantly cools you down. Jinshi Face Waterfall is also nice, with a large rock platform below where you can sit and enjoy the waterfall breeze. It’s especially refreshing, even better than air conditioning. Day 2 Bamboo Sea Oxygen Boost: Baizhu Garden → Jingzhu Mountain → Jade Valley On the second day, visit Baizhu Garden, where there are so many kinds of bamboo—thick, thin, tall, and short. Walking through the bamboo sea, the rustling leaves sound very healing. The bamboo forest is especially cool, at least 5°C cooler than outside. Sunlight filters through the leaves, creating dappled patterns perfect for photos—every shot looks like a forest-themed masterpiece. In the afternoon, go to Jingzhu Mountain, a less crowded spot with truly beautiful scenery. The mountain is clear and the water pristine. Walking along the stream, you’re shaded by trees the whole way, with no sun exposure. You can do light stream trekking; the water is shallow, just ankle-deep, and stepping in feels very comfortable. The cool stream water makes visiting here in summer a real joy. Day 3 Climb High and Look Far: Huangyangjie → Bijia Mountain → Main Peak On the third day, visit Huangyangjie, which has historical significance and stunning views. The altitude is high, and the wind is strong and cool. Standing on the viewing platform, you see layers of mountains, and when the mist drifts by, it looks magical. If you go early in the morning, you might see a sea of clouds—a vast white expanse with mountain peaks poking through like islands in the sea, very spectacular. In the afternoon, go to Bijia Mountain and take the cable car up. From the air, you can see the ten-mile azalea corridor. Although July is not azalea season, the lush greenery is still very refreshing. The mountain trail is well maintained, surrounded by primeval forest, with fresh air—a natural oxygen bar. The Main Peak Scenic Area is the highest peak in Jinggangshan and the location featured on the 100 RMB banknote background. Standing on the viewing platform looking at Wuzhi Peak is very meaningful. 🍃 Secret Cool Spots ✨ Yicui Lake: A lake in Ciping Town, very cool at night. Walking along the lakeside, enjoying the evening breeze is very comfortable. The night view is beautiful, with lights reflecting on the water like stars. ✨ Xiao Jing: The stream here is very clear, and the stones are smooth. You can sit on the rocks and soak your feet in the cool water, which is very refreshing. Surrounded by trees, there’s no sun exposure at all. ✨ Tongmuling: A less popular spot with very few people and a high forest coverage rate. Walking inside is very quiet, with only birdsong and the sound of the stream—very healing. 🎒 Summer Travel Tips 1. There are many mosquitoes in the mountains, so bring mosquito repellent to avoid many bites. 2. Wear non-slip shoes, as many places are wet and slippery. 3. Bring a light jacket; it’s cooler on the mountain and in the early morning and evening. 4. Jinggangshan’s attractions are quite spread out, so buying a sightseeing bus ticket is very convenient. --- Accommodation 🏨 Elong Ruiyun Jinggangshan Hotel (Tourist Service Center Branch) The No.1 high-end hotel in Jinggangshan, surrounded by mountain views with buffet breakfast. ⛰️ Some places, you only understand why they're called the cradle of revolution after visiting. Before coming to Jinggangshan, I thought it was just a red education base, but after arriving, I discovered that the natural scenery here is absolutely stunning! Lush bamboo covering the mountains, cascading waterfalls, and the sea of clouds in the morning – every single spot surprised me. 🏛️ My In-depth Red and Green Combined Tour Itinerary Day 1: Journey of Red Original Aspiration In the morning, first visit the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Museum to learn about Jinggangshan's history. The museum is grandly built, and its exhibits are very rich, from the Autumn Harvest Uprising to the Jinggangshan Meeting, and then to the Battle of Huangyangjie. Each artifact and photograph was deeply moving to see. ⚠️ Small reminder: The museum is free, but requires advance reservation. Just bring your ID card. In the afternoon, visit the Ciping Revolutionary Sites, including Mao Zedong's Former Residence, Zhu De's Former Residence, and the Red Army Clothing Factory and Armory, all places where the Red Army once lived. The houses are adobe structures, and the furnishings inside are very simple, allowing one to imagine how difficult the conditions were back then. Next to the former residence is a large maple tree, under which Chairman Mao often read books. The tree is now very thick and lush. Standing beneath it, you can almost feel the atmosphere of those times. In the evening, go to Nanshan Park. The climb isn't steep, and you can reach the top in about ten minutes. At the summit, there's a Torch Square with a massive, awe-inspiring torch sculpture. When lit up at night, it looks like a burning flame from a distance, very imposing. Day 2: Huangyangjie Pilgrimage + Natural Wonders On the second day, be sure to get up early and go to Huangyangjie! Huangyangjie in the morning is truly beautiful, shrouded in mist like a fairyland. Standing at the outpost, the distant mountains are hidden in the clouds, with only their peaks visible, a truly spectacular sight. The site of the Battle of Huangyangjie is right here, with trenches, outposts, and barracks all well-preserved. Looking down from the outpost, the mountain road winds and twists, truly a strategic location where "one man can hold off ten thousand." One can only imagine how fierce the battle was back then. "Cannons roar on Huangyangjie, reporting the enemy's nocturnal retreat." Standing here, you can truly appreciate the meaning of this verse. In the afternoon, visit Dajing and Xiaojing. Dajing was where Mao Zedong and Zhu De lived, surrounded by rice paddies and bamboo forests, a truly beautiful environment. Behind the house is a "reading stone" where Chairman Mao often sat to read; the stone has been worn smooth over time. Xiaojing has the former site of the Red Army Hospital. The conditions back then were truly arduous; without medicine or equipment, doctors used herbal remedies and saline for disinfection. Seeing this brought tears to my eyes. Day 3: In-depth Green Ecological Tour On the third day, visit the Longtan Waterfalls, with its five pools and eighteen waterfalls – truly breathtaking. Walking down the boardwalk, one waterfall after another, each with its own unique beauty. The clarity of Biyu Pool, the seclusion of Jinsuo Pool, the elegance of Zhenzhu Pool, the charm of Feifeng Pool, and the gentleness of Xiannv Pool – each leaves a lasting impression. I highly recommend Xiannv Pool; the shape of the waterfall truly resembles a fairy, slender and gracefully dancing, it's so vivid. The pool below the waterfall is exceptionally clear, allowing you to see the stones at the bottom. In the afternoon, visit Baiyuzhu Garden (Hundred Bamboo Garden). The variety of bamboo here is truly astounding: Moso bamboo, square bamboo, purple bamboo, Buddha's belly bamboo, and many more. It's an eye-opener. Walking through the bamboo forest, the rustling sound of bamboo leaves is incredibly soothing, and the air is exceptionally fresh. Take a deep breath, and you'll feel full of negative oxygen ions. If you have ample time, you can visit the Main Peak Scenic Area, which is the Wuzhifeng (Five Finger Peak) depicted on the back of the hundred-yuan banknote. Standing on the observation deck, it looks exactly like the one on the money, very meaningful. 🌄 Moments that left a deep impression on me ✨ Huangyangjie Sunrise: Although I woke up very early, it was truly worth it. The sun slowly emerged from the sea of clouds, casting golden light upon them. The entire world turned golden; that moment was truly breathtaking. ✨ Yicui Lake Night View: Yicui Lake at night is exceptionally beautiful, with lights reflecting on the water, shimmering and sparkling. Strolling along the lake, enjoying the evening breeze, is incredibly comfortable, and all the day's fatigue melts away. ✨ Listening to the Wind in the Bamboo Forest: Sitting in the bamboo forest of Baiyuzhu Garden, closing my eyes, and listening to the rustling of the wind through the bamboo leaves, along with the distant birdsong, was incredibly peaceful and therapeutic. I felt completely relaxed. 📖 A Little Reflection Before coming to Jinggangshan, I didn't really feel much about red tourism, thinking it was just about seeing old residences and listening to stories. But after actually coming here, standing at the Huangyangjie outpost, walking the paths the Red Army once trod, and seeing those simple old residences, I truly felt the hardships of those times. Under such difficult conditions, our predecessors still held onto their beliefs. This spirit is truly admirable. Moreover, Jinggangshan's natural scenery is so beautiful, combining red and green, offering both spiritual purification and visual enjoyment. It is truly a place worth visiting. --- Accommodation 🏨 eLong Ruiyun Jinggangshan Hotel (Tourist Service Center Branch) Highly-rated hotel within Jinggangshan Scenic Area, surrounded by mountains, buffet breakfast, free parking, children's playground, ideal for family travel. 🏨 Huazhu · Jinggangshan Jingxigu Homestay Hundred-acre garden surrounded by mountains, perfect for team building and special occasions, fishing, BBQ, pet-friendly, rustic holiday atmosphere. 🏨 Changtian Qihang Hotel (Jinggangshan Scenic Area Yicui Lake Branch) New Chinese-style courtyard garden hotel, close to Yicui Lake and Torch Square, large activity area, fully equipped family cinema rooms. 🏨 Jinggangshan Jingfeng Hotel (Jinggangshan Scenic Area Tianjie Branch) Newly renovated in 2025, prime bustling location, rich historical charm, surrounded by attractions, super convenient for travel and sightseeing.
