The city where Thailand began... but there are hardly any tourists here.
Sukhothai Historical Park is the ancient 13th-century capital of Siam.
This is exactly where Thai culture, the written language, and its architecture were born. It's a massive area packed with dozens of temples and Buddha statues.
📍 Entrance fee: ~100 THB per zone (the park is split into several sections)
🚲 The best way to get around is by bike
📍 Way fewer crowds compared to Ayutthaya
This place isn't about the "wow factor" at first glance; it's all about the atmosphere and the sheer scale of its history — save this for later 📌

Wat Traphang Ngoen, Sukhothai Province
Located by a large pond, known as "Traphang," the reflection of the pagoda on the water creates a serene, beautiful, and classic view. Built during the Sukhothai era, its highlight is the lotus bud-shaped pagoda, a distinctive feature of Sukhothai art. The square base is sturdy, while the top is gracefully delicate 🕍. In front of the pagoda stands a Buddha statue, and nearby, there is a walking Buddha statue, which is a prominent artistic feature of this era.
Another favorite spot is the ordination hall in the middle of the water, situated on a small island in the pond. It exudes a peaceful and sacred atmosphere. For photography enthusiasts, visiting during the morning or evening is recommended as the light is beautiful, the water is calm, and you can capture authentic Sukhothai-style retro images 📸. Exploring the Mysterious History of Sukhothai Ancient Temples
Sukhothai Historical Park is the site of the capital of the 13th-century Sukhothai Kingdom. Known as the "Cradle of Thailand," this place is closely tied to the formation of Thai script, the establishment of Theravada Buddhism, and the maturity of Thai artistic styles. Walking into the park feels like opening a history book written in stone.
Wat Mahathat is the heart of the park. Its elegant main stupa stands tall, surrounded by remnants of Buddha statues and column bases. Even with only ruins remaining, you can still sense the grandeur and order of the former kingdom.
Standing before the stupa, you'll notice the soft lines and fluid posture of Sukhothai Buddha statues, which are distinctly different from the style of the later Bangkok Kingdom. The Buddha statues here have a subtle smile, exuding a gentle northern charm.
At Wat Si Chum, the massive seated Buddha always leaves visitors in awe. Hidden within a square structure, the statue is visible through a narrow entrance, revealing its elongated fingers and serene face. Sunlight streams through the gaps above, outlining the Buddha's contours with light and shadow, creating an indescribable sense of sacredness.
Many travelers slow their pace and even fall silent upon reaching this place.

Praying to Phra Ajana at Wat Si Chum
🏘 Wat Si Chum is an ancient site located in the northwest of Sukhothai city. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng.
🌳 The word 'Si' originates from the local Thai term 'Sali,' which refers to the Bodhi tree. Therefore, the name 'Si Chum' means a grove of Bodhi trees.
🛕 Inside the temple, there is a large ancient structure in the form of a square mandapa. Within the mandapa stands a massive stucco Buddha statue. It is presumed that the mandapa once had a dome-like roof in the past.
🙏🏽 The Buddha statue inside the mandapa is named Phra Ajana, as mentioned in the first stone inscription. The name means 'The Unshaken One.' It is a Buddha statue in the Mara Vichaya posture, with a core made of bricks and laterite, showcasing Sukhothai-style art.
👥 This site is historically significant as King Naresuan the Great held a military assembly here before marching to suppress Sawankhalok city. This event is the origin of the legend of the 'Speaking Buddha,' which has been passed down through generations.

Sukhothai Historical Park
Visiting Sukhothai Historical Park, my first impression was how "quiet" and "peaceful" it was, even more than I had expected. What stood out the most was that it wasn't just about taking photos, but also about pausing to reflect, being with oneself, and feeling a deep respect for the past without any effort. Sukhothai doesn't impress in a flashy way, but it brings a sense of calm and makes you realize the true value of simplicity. It's truly beautiful.

One day you will return to Sukhothai
Sukhothai, meaning "Dawn of Happiness," was the capital of the first truly independent kingdom in Thai history (1238-1438) and is known as the "Cradle of Thai Culture." It preserves numerous magnificent Buddhist sites and palace ruins, such as the giant seated Buddha of Wat Mahathat and the walking Buddha of Wat Si Chum, whose artistic style pioneered the unique "Sukhothai-style" Buddha statues. The ancient city’s lakes are tranquil, with stupas and broken pillars standing tall against the blue sky and green grass. Walking here, it feels as if you can touch the very dawn and soul of Thai civilization.

Khao Luang Sukhothai Tent Site
The tent sites on Khao Luang Sukhothai are not very extensive. The tent sites are green, with some on the hillside and others descending like steps. You can set up tents wherever the park staff permits. First-come, first-served, but there are also tents available for those renting tents from the park, which are already set up by the park staff.
The tent sites have a welfare shop, which serves as a point for picking up tents/bedding and contacting porters. They sell drinking water, soft drinks, snacks, instant noodles, canned fish, and gas cans. Picnic stoves and pots are also available for rent. The highlight here is the omelet rice. The wait is a bit long, as the staff sells them in shifts, but the experience is truly satisfying. There are places to charge your phone. The shop only accepts cash, so bring your own.
Beside them are separate male and female restrooms with toilets, showers, and sinks. The rooms are reasonably clean and comfortable. The water is very cold. Solar lights are provided, but it's recommended to bring a flashlight.
The wind can be quite strong at night. It's recommended to choose a good spot, set up anchors, and tighten the ropes, or your tent will surely fly away. The site is quiet after 9:00 PM, with only the sound of the wind. The night air is chilly. Prepare your winter gear.

Go experience the legend of the talking Buddha in Sukhothai 👏
#TravelChat
Wat Sri Chum 🪷 Sukhothai Province is home to another legendary figure known as the "Talking Buddha" or "Words of Wisdom," a Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture. 🙏 It's said that Phra Achana, the large Buddha image in this pavilion, once spoke out to rouse soldiers during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great before battle, boosting their morale. This led locals to nickname him the "Talking Buddha." 🕊️
Even though it's a legend, stepping inside the narrow pavilion, where the echoing sound can be heard, you can easily imagine the eerie atmosphere. 🌟 Anyone visiting Sukhothai shouldn't miss experiencing it for themselves. 📸✨ Anyone who's been there before, let's share and discuss.
