2026 Surabaya Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in February)

For the 5 days 4 nights itinerary in Surabaya + Bali, we hired a local guide to take us around. For the Komodo trip, we booked a sunset tour + a full-day tour, and spent the last day wandering around before heading back. DAY 1⃣️ Arrived in Surabaya, the guide picked us up at the airport. I have to say, the guide was very enthusiastic! We wanted to go to the supermarket first to buy food, so he took us there according to our wishes, then brought us to stay near Bromo for the night. 🏨 DAY 2⃣️ Switched to a jeep 🚙 to go to the sunrise viewing platform. The weather was very bad that day; it rained continuously from 1:30 AM to 4 AM. We waited for the rain to stop at a coffee shop. We thought this gamble was a failure, but unexpectedly, after 5 AM, the fog slowly cleared, and Bromo’s true face gradually appeared. Although we didn’t see a stunning sunrise, this rainy season Bromo is not something everyone gets to see, haha!! We wanted to visit Xian Ge’s check-in spot, and the guide took us there and even helped us take photos (a little secret: the photos turned out pretty good). I also checked in at the same volcano as Xian Ge!! 🌋 DAY 3⃣️ Stayed near Ijen volcano, started climbing at 2 AM, descended at 6 AM. Possibly due to the rainy season, there was no blue fire, sob sob. I guess I’ll just watch the gas stove at home. But the sulfur lake was also very beautiful and impressive. DAY 4⃣️ Departed at 6 AM to Lovina to chase dolphins 🐬. The guide went on the boat with us, chasing dolphins and snorkeling. Snorkeling was really fun!! In the afternoon, we went to Ubud for a stroll and then returned to the hotel to rest. DAY 5⃣️ One-day tour of Penida Island—Diamond Beach + Klingking Beach + Broken Beach + Angel’s Billabong. Because of the boat ride, the guide couldn’t drive today, so we found a driver to drive us and the guide around Penida Island. The originally booked driver had a flat tire, so we switched to a new driver last minute. This new driver seemed to drive a bit aggressively. But the guide accompanied us to the attractions. After the Penida Island tour, the guide took us back to the hotel, ending the 5-day itinerary. DAY 6⃣️ Flew to Komodo, booked a sunset tour that included snorkeling at two dive spots and watching the sunset bats 🦇 on the boat. The driver picked us up and dropped us off at the hotel. DAY 7⃣️ Full-day Komodo tour chasing Komodo dragons, manta rays, sea turtles, and visiting the pink sand beach. Evening flight back to Bali. DAY 8⃣️ Took a taxi to Uluwatu, planned to go paragliding 🪂, but after waiting for 3 hours, the wind wasn’t strong enough, so we went back to Kuta for shopping. You can buy local specialties at Bintang supermarket, which is quite cheap. If you have time, you can also visit the airport duty-free shop. Flew back to Guangzhou in the evening. 3 days exploring Surabaya – the vibrant port city of Indonesia 🇮🇩, a short journey filled with unforgettable experiences. 📍 Day 1: I started by strolling around the city center, visiting iconic landmarks like the Shark and Crocodile statue (the symbol of Surabaya), churches, and some old town corners. The bustling, modern atmosphere mixed with a touch of antiquity gave me a very unique feeling. 📍 Day 2: The highlight of the trip was conquering Mount Bromo. Waking up at dawn to catch the sunrise and standing before the majestic view of misty clouds and the volcanic crater was truly an unforgettable moment. The natural beauty here made me feel both small and incredibly energized. 📍 Day 3: I spent the last day relaxing, shopping at local malls, and indulging in Surabaya's specialties – from steaming hot bakso, fragrant grilled sate, to simple yet delicious street food. Surabaya Zoo is a well-known zoo in Indonesia, housing a wide variety of animals, including Komodo dragons and Javan tigers, which you can't see in Taiwan. For animal lovers or those traveling with children, it's considered a pretty good attraction. However, to be honest, there were news reports before mentioning that the animal care conditions there were not very good, with some areas looking quite old and management issues as well. But it seems like improvements have been made recently, and it feels like the zoo staff are making an effort.

Day 1 ! ● Bromo Sunrise Tour & Horse Ride Wake up by 2:30 AM, hop onto a 4WD jeep for your sunrise adventure. Drive to Mount Penanjakan (main viewpoint) for a panoramic view of Bromo, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru during sunrise. After sunrise, descend to the Sea of Sand. Take an optional horse ride across the sand to the base of Mount Bromo. Climb up the 250 steps to the crater rim and look into the smoking caldera. Day 2 ! ● Tumpak Sewu Waterfall Trek → Drive to Ijen Crater Area Trek down to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall: Start with a short walk to the top viewpoint for an amazing panoramic photo. Then descend to the base of the waterfall via steep paths and ropes — be cautious, and expect to get wet. Explore the lush canyon and take stunning photos near the waterfall. Day 3 ! ( A pity I didn't mark this off my checklist :<) ● Ijen Blue Flame Trek & Sunrise Begin your hike up to Ijen Crater (~3 km, 1.5–2 hrs uphill walk). Reach the crater rim before dawn, then descend into the crater to witness the famous blue flame (best seen around 2–4 AM). Watch local miners collecting sulfur manually — a rare and humbling sight. After blue flame viewing, climb back up to the rim and catch a spectacular sunrise over the turquoise acid lake. Hike back down and return to your hotel for breakfast and a shower. Day 4 ! ● Surabaya Zoo (Kebun Binatang Surabaya) makes for an enjoyable and educational stop, especially for animal lovers or families. Located in the heart of Surabaya, it's one of Southeast Asia's oldest and largest zoos, home to over 200 species including elephants, lions, crocodiles, Komodo dragons, and exotic birds. #cityplaybook Surabaya doesn’t lack good cafes or coffee roasters. But this place feels closest to home. First, the coffee. Try their magic if you haven’t. Featuring triple ristretto shot, it has an intensity closer to what I usually have of piccolo from Malaysia (and Europe), and it’s full bodied while retaining a good bit of interesting acidity. Second, the ambience. I can’t express clearly how much I’m fond of this kinda wooden tone with lotsa window. It simply makes it a perfect ground for photography. Third, the food/cake. Food from cafe is never the cheapest, but this place balances great taste, portion and affordable cost. From the fact that i came here for three consecutive days and since i discovered this place i ditched Seniman & Little Prince (best fruity espresso in Surabaya), you know how much i loved this place.

Personally, I think the scenery in Indonesia during the rainy season is just as beautiful as in the dry season～ Rainy season period: October to March of the following year !! Two most concerned questions: Will you not be able to see the volcanoes? √ You can only miss the view on very foggy days, but foggy weather happens in both rainy and dry seasons. Plus, a little rain means no volcanic ash to deal with. √ Also, the volcano scenery during the rainy season is completely different. Unlike the deep brown and desolate look in the dry season, the volcanoes look like a vast grassland in the rainy season—a view you won’t see in the dry season. ② It rains every day, will it affect travel? √ Taking 2023 as an example, even in the rainiest months of December and January, it only rained on 16 days. The rest of the time was mostly sunny. √ The rain is mostly short thunderstorms. If you check the Indonesian weather forecast in time, the rain might stop while you’re having a cup of coffee. On our last day in Indonesia, after seeing the volcanoes, we went to Surabaya Zoo before leaving, just to catch a glimpse of the legendary "Komodo dragon," also known as the Komodo giant lizard. You can't see this in China‼️ The first time I learned about Komodo dragons was from a documentary introducing Komodo Island in Indonesia, where many Komodo dragons live🦎. This time, I got to see them in person. They aren't very large, covered in scales, with sturdy limbs and long tails. Most of them lie still without moving much, and when they crawl, it's quite slow, giving off a lazy vibe. Their skin color closely matches the yellow soil of the zoo, so some are hard to spot at first. Later, we found several hidden ones, haha. 🦎 Zoo route: If you want to see the Komodo dragons first, go right after entering; their enclosure is there.
