Rainbow hills of East Azerbaijan – natural layers of color
#winterescape
📍 Why they stand out
Just outside Tabriz, the landscape suddenly shifts from green valleys to colorful sediment hills. These striped formations are part of the geological diversity of East Azerbaijan province.
🏞 Landscape experience
The hills are relatively low but visually striking. Walking closer reveals fine mineral layers and shifting tones depending on sunlight. The area is open and accessible without formal entry points.
Because it is not a developed tourist site, there are no facilities on location. This keeps the experience natural but requires preparation.
🚗 Access
Best reached by private car or taxi from Tabriz.
🕒 Best season
Spring and autumn for moderate temperatures and clearer visibility.
🗺 Combine with
– Kandovan rock village
– Tabriz Bazaar
– Sahand Mountain region
The colorful mountains near Tabriz are about geology rather than monuments – a reminder that nature can create patterns as striking as architecture.

Colorful Mountains near Tabriz – Iran’s striped desert special
#winterescape
The Colorful Mountains near Tabriz, often called the “Rainbow Mountains” of northwest Iran, create one of the most unusual landscapes in the country. Layers of red, orange, yellow, and brown sediment form striped hills that look almost artificial from a distance.
🏜 What makes them unique
The colors come from mineral deposits accumulated over millions of years. Iron oxide gives the deep red tones, while other minerals create lighter and darker layers. The result is a natural pattern stretching across low desert hills.
Unlike the larger and more famous Rainbow Mountains in China, this area feels remote and quiet. There are no fences or heavy infrastructure – just open terrain.
🚗 How to get there
Located near the Tabriz–Ahar road. About 30–40 minutes by car from Tabriz.
🕒 Best time
Late afternoon enhances the red tones. Avoid midday in summer due to heat.
🗺 Combine with
– Kandovan village
– Tabriz city center
– Lake Urmia
The Red Mountains near Tabriz are not a long-stop attraction. They are about light, texture, and landscape contrast.

Kandovan – a village inside the mountain
#hellonewyear
Kandovan feels less like a destination and more like a discovery. The village is carved into volcanic rock cones, with homes, storage rooms, and small courtyards hollowed out of stone. What makes it special is that people still live here, using architecture created hundreds of years ago. Paths curve naturally between the cones, and doors open straight into rock interiors.
Inside, the temperature stays surprisingly stable, showing how well this form of housing works in a harsh climate. From a distance, Kandovan looks almost unreal, but up close it feels human and practical. Visiting Kandovan is not about monuments – it’s about seeing how daily life can exist in total harmony with geology and time.

Kandovan – life carved into stone
#hellonewyear
📍 Why it’s special
Kandovan is one of the most unusual villages in Iran, where people still live inside houses carved directly into volcanic rock. These cone-shaped formations look almost surreal, but they are not ruins or a tourist reconstruction – they are real homes, shaped over centuries. Kandovan is often compared to Cappadocia, yet the key difference is continuity: this is not a landscape of abandoned caves, but a living village where architecture and daily life are inseparable.
🏘 What to see
– Rock-cut houses carved into volcanic cones
– Narrow paths winding between stone dwellings
– Simple interiors adapted to natural insulation
– Small shops and tea places built into the rock
– Views over the valley that reveal how compact and organic the settlement is
🧱 Architecture & atmosphere
The stone keeps interiors cool in summer and warm in winter, making the architecture perfectly adapted to the environment. Everything feels practical and intimate. Smoke marks, worn steps, and uneven walls show generations of use. Kandovan feels quiet but not frozen in time – people pass by, doors open, life continues inside the stone.
🕒 Best time to visit
– Morning or late afternoon for softer light
– Spring and summer for easier access
🗺 Combine with
– Tabriz
– Lake Urmia region
– East Azerbaijan mountain landscapes
Kandovan is not about spectacle. It’s about adaptation – a rare example of humans shaping life directly into the landscape rather than building on top of it.

The Blue Mosque, a fantastical blend of sacredness and beauty
#2026New Year's Greetings
Entering the Blue Mosque, its grandeur took my breath away. The blue tiles on the exterior walls sparkled in the sunlight, creating a feeling of continuity with the sky.
The interior was even more stunning. The large domed roof and numerous chandeliers created a sacred and magnificent atmosphere. The walls and pillars were intricately decorated, creating a sense of artistic value.
Inside the mosque, I witnessed worshippers praying devoutly. The Blue Mosque is a place where history, art, and faith meld, and this experience will be unforgettable.

A place in Iran that makes you feel like a star
Iran 🇮🇷☀️ Kandovan Village is pulled into countless group photos in one day
Located 60 kilometers south of Tabriz in the Sahand Mountain volcanic tuff landscape area, it is famous for its honeycomb-shaped cave houses carved out of volcanic rock. Its conical cave houses are naturally shaped by hydraulic erosion of pumice tuff formed from volcanic eruptions, combining volcanic activity structures with artificial carving features. The existing buildings are over 700 years old, with some dating back 850 years to the Mongol invasion period. Local residents moved here to escape the Mongol invasion, carving multi-level cave dwellings within volcanic rock layers up to 100 meters thick. The interiors include kitchens, bedrooms, and other functional areas, along with public facilities such as mosques. The village has 168 families and 601 residents, still maintaining a self-sufficient lifestyle including beekeeping and animal husbandry.

IRAN’S KANDOVAN VILLAGE — THE ‘CAVE VILLAGE’ YOU DIDN’T KNOW EXISTED
#hellochristmas Kandovan is a unique village built into volcanic rock formations, where real families still live inside ancient cave homes carved hundreds of years ago. The honeycomb-style cliffs make the area look like something from a fantasy movie. Visitors can walk through the narrow paths, explore traditional cave houses, and try local saffron products or handmade crafts. Early morning visits are best — cooler temperatures, softer light, and fewer crowds. Bring comfy footwear, as the terrain can be uneven. This is one of Iran’s most fascinating hidden gems.

Tabriz Traditions – A Feast of Heritage 🍢
#falladventures Tabriz Traditions – A Feast of Heritage 🍢
Tabriz surprised me with its warmth and flavor. In a carpet-lined dining hall, I sat on cushions while music played softly. I ordered koofteh tabrizi — a giant meatball stuffed with plums and walnuts, served with fragrant broth. The first bite was unforgettable — a perfect mix of sweet, savory, and spice. The host poured rosewater tea and shared stories of the bazaar’s past. Tabriz’s food carries pride and heart — every meal feels like family.

#hellohalloween February brings whispers of spring. Almond trees in southern provinces begin to bloom, painting soft pink clouds over green hills. Farmers in Fars and Kerman prepare their fields for new planting. Snow still covers the mountains, but sunlight feels warmer. Rivers start to sing again. It’s a month of balance — winter fading, life awakening. In Iran, February is a promise: that beauty always returns.
