Lalibela Ethiopia
Lalibela
The absolute highlight of any visit to Ethiopia is the 12th century rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Inspired by his visit to Jerusalem King Lalibela wanted to create a New Jerusalem in Ethiopia. How they managed to carve these beautiful churches out of the rock, how big the workforce was and how long they have been working on it is not known. The result is magnificent and goes beyond imagination. What it makes more special, even magical, is that the churches are operating like time never passed. Needless to say Lalibela is listed as a World Heritage Site.

Heaven and Earth
The eleven churches are separated in two clusters and a freestanding church. It is said the clusters represent earthly and heavenly Jerusalem respectively and the freestanding church is the famous Bet Giyorgis. Famous because, being the last one constructed, it is considered by many the most beautiful church and it is symbolizing Lalibela on almost every picture.
Lalibela is alive
While in Lalibela your guide can inform you where a (mostly early morning) service is held. Every Ethiopian Orthodox Church needs to have a Tabot (a replica of the Ark of the Covenant) to be able to function as a church. The Tabot is consecrated in the name of a Saint (the patron) and on the Saint day, once a month, a special service is held. With many churches around there is almost always a Saint day celebrated. It is a very mystical experience to observe and it shows religion in Lalibela is very much alive. If you manage to catch a yearly celebration, when the Tabot is taken out of the Makdas (holy of holiest) you will enjoy a even more colorful event.

Yabello Borana Ethiopia
Yabello - Borana
The Borana people are part of the Oromo which are the largest ethnic group of Ethiopia. The Borana are pastoralist who travel long distances with their cattle and camels in search for scarce food in an arid environment. Their appearance is much more 'African' in the way that the women are dressed in the colorful cloths found at many other areas in Africa. Yabello is the largest town in the Ethiopian Borana area, they are also found in northern Kenya. It is a good base to explore the area and the Saturday market is well worth a visit.
The Borana Lodge, in a beautiful setting in the bush (acacia) savanna, is the best place to stay in the area. Additional accommodation is available in Yabello.
El Sod
Salt lake El Sod in southern EthiopiaThe crater lake El Sod is know as Chew Bet in Amharic language, which translates as 'salt house' For centuries Borana people harvest salt from the lake for human and animal consumption The latter distributed in a wide area including northern Kenya to keep the cattle healthy. The lake is situated in a beautiful setting and offers a short but strenuous hike along the same path the donkeys take to bring out the salt.
Singing Wells
Singing Well of the Borana people in southern EthiopiaThe Borana people live in a semi arid area where water is scarce. To supply their cattle (and themselves) with this precious liquid when there is no surface water, they dug wells by hand up to 30 meters deep. These wells made it possible for the Borana people to survive for centuries under harsh conditions. It is an impressive sight to see a well operating. Man and woman form an human chain down in the well passing buckets between them to bring up the water. Meanwhile there is a loud chorus of singing to keep the rhythm going. Animals waiting for their turn to drink.
Yabello Wildlife Sanctuary
The Yabello Wildlife Sanctuary was created to protect a small population of the endemic Swayne's hartebeest. Other species inhabiting the sanctuary, mostly covered by acacia savanna, are Burchell's zebra, greater and lesser kudu, gerenuk, Grant's gazelle and Guenther's dik-dik. The sanctuary is of particular interest for birders, two endemic species are limited to a small area around Yabello: Stresemann's bushcrow and the white-tailed swallow.

Awash National Park
Awash National Park
The scenic Awash National Park is located less than 200 km east of Addis Ababa and covers 750 square kilometer acacia and grassland savanna. It has a beautiful gorge carved by the Awash River and a huge waterfall where the river plunged into the gorge. The Filwuha 'hot springs' with the surrounding doum palm offers an oasis like setting. A quick dip in the hot water is possible. The dormant Fantelle volcano is another distinct feature of the park.
The recently opened Awash Falls Lodge is a nice place to stay in the park and also camping is available. The Bilen Lodge is found outside the park on the road leading to the Danakil Depression and offers prime game viewing opportunities in the surrounding area.
The Awash Falls
The Awash FallsThe beautiful Awash Falls are an impressive site, especially in the rainy season. A short walk leads to the falls and the riverine forest supports good birdlife and (vervet) monkeys
Wildlife
Filwuha hot springs in Awash National ParkThe park offers a good variety in wildlife but the numbers are small. The beisa oryx, Soemmering's gazelle and Salt's dik-dik need to be mentioned but also lesser and greater kudu, defassa waterbuck and warthog are common. Big predators like lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena (spotted and striped) are present but not often seen.
Birdlife
The different habitats in the park supports a wide range of bird species. Over 450 species are recorded in the park, among them some endemic or near- endemic species. This makes the park a prime destination for enthusiast birders.

Harar Ethiopia
Harar
The walled city of Harar is considered the 4th holiest city of Islam in the world after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. The wall (Jugol) with five gates is build in the 16th century to protect the town after the failed conquest of the Christian highlands by Ahmed Gragn ' the left-handed'.
Harar is a lively, friendly town set in a fertile agricultural area, famous for the coffee grown there. Another cash crop found around Harar is qat, a mild stimulant. Both product are consumed in large quantities in the town.
World Heritage Site
The old town harbors 82 mosques (3 dating back to the 10th century) and 102 shrines. Besides the religious monuments the town has many old townhouses with exceptional interior design. Harar Jugol is one of the nine World Heritage Sites of Ethiopia.
Explore the town
The maze like lay out of the town is best, and largely only, explored on foot. A local guide is essential to find your way around and is a good source of information about the rich history of the town. Meanwhile you will enjoy the vibrant daily life with markets, tailors, blacksmiths, coffeehouses and the like. Arthur Rimbaud, a 19th century French poet is one of the famous former residents of the town, his house is now a museum. Other interesting museums are also found.
The Hyena Man
The most famous resident of Harar at the moment, at least for tourist, is the Hyena Man. This brave guy hand-feeds the hyena's who are living around the town every evening just outside the wall. He is even passing the meat to the animals mouth to mouth. You are invited to do the same...... The origin of this event is not really clear but it is spectacular and fun to watch.

Arba Minch
Arba Minch
The southern town of Arba Minch is situated in a beautiful setting at the foothills of the Rift Valley escarpment and overlooking Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo. The name of the town translated as '40 springs', which are found nearby. It is an excellent base for some trips in the surrounding area.
The best places to stay in town are the Paradise Lodge and Swayne's Hotel. A real authentic place to stay, about 30 km from Arba Minch, is at the Dorze Lodge with amazing view over Lake Abaya and Chamo and sleeping in the original Dorze hut.
Nech Sar National Park
The Nech Sar National Park includes parts of Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo and the 'Bridge of God' between them. It offers stunning scenery and a variety of wildlife among them the endemic Swayne's hartebeest. Gamedrives and walks are possible in the park. A boattrip on Lake Chamo offers a variety of birds, most of the time hippo's and a spectacular visit to the 'crocodile market' where dozens of crocodiles (among them the biggest of Africa) warming their bodies in sun.
