Spring Balkan Road Trip
#springtravel
Sarajevo – Mostar – Kravice – Trebinje – Budva – Montenegro Mountains – Zlatibor – Sarajevo 🚗🌿
There’s magic in crossing the Balkans in spring. Mountains still snow‑capped, valleys turning lush green, air smelling of fresh grass and woodsmoke. We drove a circular route starting and ending in Sarajevo – and every stop left its mark.
📍 Sarajevo – East meets West
Ottoman alleys, Austro‑Hungarian facades, Baščaršija market. Spring wildflowers on the hills. Food sets the tone: rich, meaty, Ottoman‑influenced – ćevapi, burek, begova čorba.
🌉 Mostar & Kravice Waterfalls
Mostar’s Stari Most arches over the Neretva. Then, 40 km southwest, the Kravice Waterfalls on the Trebižat River – a 25‑m high, 120‑m wide amphitheater of emerald water. In spring it’s thunderous and surrounded by vivid green. We just soaked in the power (swimming is too dangerous in spring). A perfect nature break.
🏘️ Trebinje – quiet gem
Sunny, relaxed town on the Trebišnjica River, just 24 km from Croatia. Ottoman old town Kastel, huge plane trees, Hercegovačka Gračanica monastery on the hill. Best grilled lamb of the trip.
🏖️ Budva & Montenegrin coast
Walled old town by the Adriatic. Spring = fewer crowds, fresh seafood, pleasant walks. Then we drove up into the highlands.
🏔️ Montenegro mountains & Lake Vrmoje
Crystal‑clear mountain lake, surrounded by rocky slopes still dusted with snow. A hidden treasure far from tourist trails.
🌲 Zlatibor – Serbian mountain retreat
Green meadows, wooden villages (Drvengrad), local cheeses, prosciutto, and plenty of rakija to toast the journey.
🍖 Balkan food: meat lover’s paradise with Ottoman soul
· Ćevapi – minced meat sausages with somun, onion, kajmak.
· Pljeskavica – spiced patty.
· Burek – flaky meat pastry.
· Dolma – vine leaves stuffed with spiced meat.
· Begova čorba – rich chicken‑okra soup.
· Tufahija – poached apple with walnuts.
And thick Turkish‑style coffee.
🚗 Crucial tip for car rental
If you rent a car in Sarajevo, explicitly ask the rental company to confirm that the insurance covers driving in neighboring Balkan countries (Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, etc.). Some basic policies only cover Bosnia. Don’t assume – get it in writing.
📣 Spring road trip tips
· Car is essential for freedom.
· Pack layers – sun, rain, even snow on passes.
· Passports ready for border crossings (quick in spring).
· Mountain roads are winding – drive carefully.
· Cash preferred in local restaurants (euros or local currency).
· Portions are huge – share dishes.
This spring loop through Bosnia, Montenegro, and Serbia felt like a journey through time – from Ottoman bazaars to mountain lakes, and the food alone is worth the drive. 🍖🌄
