Philippine Grandfather Mountain Apo
One of my bucket lists got checked! It was Mt. Apo!
It is the highest mountain in the Philippine Archipelago and the 24th highest peak of an island on Earth.
Rising 2956 Meters Above Sea Level, Mt. Apo stands as the highest mountain in the Philippines. Also considered the grandfather of Philippine mountains and a sacred place in local mythology, Mt. Apo is an important climb, especially for local mountaineers. Those seeking to experience its trails will also find themselves immersed in the rich culture of the people living at the foot of the mountain.
The experience still feels surreal— In awe of what lay in front of me and simply grateful for the experience and its totality.
Difficulty: Advanced (7/10) Hike Duration: 3 days Location: Davao & North Cotobato Elevation: 2956 MASL

The Grandfather of All Philippine Mountains
Mount Apo is the highest mountain in the Philippines. It is located in Davao, a city in Mindanao. It is for sure on the checklist of every mountaineers in our country. Prior to climb, you need to book ahead an event organizer. I recommend Kaplag Adventours, the tour guides are friendly and the meals they prepare are delicious. Rate is 6000 pesos per head; inclusions are all the necessary permit, pickup from airport to Jumpoff and complete meal for the 3 days, 2 night camp.
There are many trails to choose from, you can discuss it with your organizer depending on your experience. You also need to secure a medical certificate to ensure that you are fit to climb. We opt for a challenging backtrail, entrance at Digos trail and exit at Sta. Cruz trail.
Day 1: Paradiso ➡️ Junction ➡️ Baruring gamay ➡️ Baruring Dako ➡️ E-camp ➡️ Camp Gudi-gudi
Day 2: Camp Gudi-gudi ➡️ Boulders ➡️ White Sand ➡️ Old crater ➡️ Lake Venado
Day 3: Lake Venado ➡️ Century Tree ➡️ Sta. Cruz Trail
What made our trail rough was that it poured all throughout our 2nd to 3rd day journey, so the trail is really muddy. And to top it up, there was an earthquake on the 3rd day. I suggest you need to check the weather advisory in advance. But for an adrenaline junkie, it made my experience more fun and memorable.
I hope this post will inspire you to climb Mount Apo ☺️

Climbing Mount Huabao
The Qilian Range stretches for hundreds of kilometers, like a natural Great Wall, separating the Tibetan Plateau from the Gobi Desert and China’s Loess Plateau. With peaks close to 6000 meters, it is an alpine wilderness where, if you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the “ghost cat”, the elusive Snow Leopard. Mount Huabao, with its five peaks that rise just shy of 4500 meters altitude, is located in the Southern Qilian Range. It is not very popular with tourists, and the secondary peaks are rarely climbed.
The landscape changes from the base of the mountain, where forests and shrubbery are intersected by mountain streams, climbing higher to alpine meadows where yaks graze and wolves roam, and culminating in the highest points with glacial valleys and jagged ridges and peaks.
There are no tourist paths, and information found on internet is minimal, making hiking on Mount Huabao a challenging orienteering experience, therefore a GPS backed by topo maps and a compass are essential.
We started the ascent on the north side of the mountain, from a lake called Dashitan. The north side is much more demanding, with a 2500 meters relative altitude, but much more beautiful. The first part of the climb follows the course of a river that flows through an old glacial valley. On the first day we passed by a farm and climbed to 3800 meters altitude, where we set our camp for the night.
A shroud of mist enveloped our tent just before we settled in, but later the sky cleared and we enjoyed a warm and pleasant night, the best I ever had at this altitude, nestled on a pass, between some rocks, with the high peaks on one side and deep valleys on the other, billions of stars and a brilliant Milky Way hanging above us.
The next morning we left our camp behind and decided to do a light and fast ascent of one of the nameless high peaks. We followed a secondary ridge, avoiding the snow and rock avalanche prone glacial circles.
The climb was a difficult scramble, but there was no need for technical gear and by noon we were enjoying the glorious view from 4449 meters altitude. The permanent ice and snow, that only decades ago covered the mountain year round, is now reduced to patches on the north faces.
During the descent we had the chance to make some friends at 3000 meters altitude. They were a group of locals looking for Cordyceps Sinensis, colloquially called “caterpillar fungus” in English and Yartsa Gunbu in Tibetan, which literally translates as “summer grass, winter worm”.
Reaching the base of the mountain we were invited to have lunch at the farm that we passed by on our way up, and again by the guard at the gate on the edge of the lake. We were full, but the local hospitality is not something that can be avoided and the only payment they accepted was a promise that we will visit them again, which we plan to do in the future. #hiking #outdoor #adventure #mountaineering
Celebrating Y2022 at the Everest Base Camp
Ever imagine a trip to Mt. Everest Base Camp located approximately 5300m above sea level? Well, make sure to have an oxygen tank ready with you to help you breathe. Tested my luck at the EBC this new year holiday and voilà! Sunny and bright all day everyday as I got steps closer to the camp. Hoping to try out for a real hike up on the peaks one day when the weather gets a bit warmer.

Alengshan" was actually one of the seven heroes of Guguan in the old days
Later, because the mountain pass had to go up the stream for a while to reach it, it was dangerous.
And replaced by other mountains
In recent years.
