Macau street food on a rainy day 🇲🇴
Macau One-Day Itinerary 🇲🇴
This time, I headed to Macau to explore some new food spots 😋 After arriving in Macau via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, I hopped on the 101 bus and headed straight to the city center:
First Stop: The historic "Kam Ma Lon Cafe"
Address: Ground Floor, 50 Rua dos Mercadores, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro
The entrance primarily sells bread and pastries, while the restaurant area is inside, spread across two floors. We ordered the curry potato and chicken wing rice noodles, as well as the curry potato and spicy fish noodles. They serve the curry potato and chicken wings separately so the broth doesn't dilute the curry—a really smart touch! The curry itself was fragrant, spicy, and packed with flavor 👍🏾
Second Stop: "Leong Heng Kei Congee"
Address: Ground Floor, 21 Rua da Felicidade, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro
For lunch, we hit up another local gem that went from a street stall to a brick-and-mortar shop 😋 We had the pork liver congee; the liver had no gamey smell at all, and the congee base was super smooth and creamy 👍🏾 We also got a pork chop bun—the onions were sautéed perfectly to complement the pork chop, and the traditional bun was spot on ✅ Definitely passed the test! We added a side of stuffed green peppers 🌶️, which was decent but nothing extraordinary.
Third Stop: Rua do Cunha, Taipa
"Manteigaria" (Portuguese Egg Tarts)
Address: Ground Floor, 22 Rua do Regedor, Taipa
It features an open kitchen, so you can watch the pastry chefs in action. Once you buy your tart, you can sprinkle sugar or cinnamon on top to customize it to your liking.
"Chacha Wu"
Address: Ground Floor, 26 Rua do Regedor, Taipa
I cooled down with an avocado milkshake smoothie—super fresh and refreshing 😋 Also tried the red apple iced tea, which was pretty standard.
Fourth Stop: "Wong Kei Cafe"
Address: Ground Floor, 60 Rua de Correia da Silva, Taipa Village
Time for some afternoon tea! The exterior matches the Portuguese vibe of the neighborhood with its charming pastel green facade! The interior boasts a lovely retro style. Takeout is on the ground floor, and dine-in seating is on the 2nd and 3rd floors. This time, we ordered the Portuguese spicy fish noodles, a pineapple bun with butter, kumquat yuzu dried tangerine peel soda, and salted lemon 7-Up 🍹 The food across the board was fantastic 👍🏾
Fifth Stop: Taipa Market
Address: 358 Rua do Regedor, Taipa, Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Macau
Yes, you read that right—a market! Since reopening, the 1st floor has been revamped to include a specialty food and cultural hub featuring nearly 20 local snack stalls and creative products... The 2nd-floor rooftop even has an open-air cafe!
My Honest Review: ✍🏻
Kam Ma Lon Cafe: Serving the curry separately is nice, but it somehow lacked that traditional flavor. The lemon tea base, however, was rich and robust 👍🏾
Manteigaria: The egg tarts weren't hot enough, and the taste didn't really stand out.
Chacha Wu: The avocado smoothie was mildly sweet and perfectly balanced. It had nuts at the bottom, offering a fun, slightly salty and crunchy contrast to the refreshing drink—really good! 👍🏾 The apple iced tea was just okay 😊
Leong Heng Kei: I originally wanted to try their flat rice noodles (kuay teow), but it seems my info was wrong as they didn't have any. The congee, though, was absolutely delicious 👍🏾, so it wasn't a wasted trip 🤭
Wong Kei Cafe: The drinks were a pleasant surprise! The dried tangerine peel was fragrant without overpowering the drink—a great combo 👍🏾 The salted lemon 7-Up sounds basic, but they didn't skimp on the salted lemon, making it super soothing for the throat 😌 Their pineapple bun with butter is anything but ordinary; the bun is super crispy and unique. A must-try! 😋
Taipa Market: There are so many other snacks to try 🤭 Unfortunately, the egg waffle stall I wanted to visit was closed, so I skipped the rest of the food and just bought some Macau souvenirs 🏛️
Since it was raining pretty heavily that day, we couldn't explore as much as we wanted to, so we ended up heading back relatively early 🥹
Tips 💡
· "Kam Ma Lon Cafe": You sweeten your cold drinks yourself! There's a pitcher of syrup on every table, so no need to ask for "less sweet" or "no sugar."
· "Kam Ma Lon Cafe": You can order from the bakery at the entrance and eat it inside 👍🏾
· "Wong Kei Cafe": If a full-sized pineapple bun seems too messy to eat, you can opt for the mini ones (four to an order) for easy, bite-sized snacking 👍🏾
· "Chacha Wu": Their milkshake series is a bestseller 🏆
· Head to the Taipa Market rooftop cafe in the evening to sip coffee while taking in a gorgeous sunset 🌅👍🏾👍🏾
· For souvenir shopping at Taipa Market, the two connected shops on the ground floor offer slightly better prices 👛
· For the trip back to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge from Taipa, just hop on the 102X bus—it takes you straight there ✅
