The Gururin Pass rental bicycles are first-come, first-served starting at 9 AM, so they are unavailable by 10:35 AM. I quickly visit two manhole card distribution points using the community bus in just 30 minutes. Next, I head to Mihara Station. Since I need to pick up the Sanyo Shinkansen tickets reserved via e5489 from the machine, I miss the chance to stamp the manhole. I wonder if the EX reservation allows for ticketless travel on this section; I’ll try that next time. After wasting some time, I only manage to collect the manhole cards. I then take the Shinkansen to Fukuyama Station. Finally, I can collect the Carp Boya Cal version manhole card, which had been suspended previously but is now available again. I also photograph the existing and new manholes in the city. After buying Starbucks and an ekiben, I board the Shinkansen to Hiroshima. After an early check-in, I attend the manhole tour program I reserved for 2 PM. It feels almost like a class. The underground of Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium turns out to be a massive rainwater storage tank. I get to go inside and even experience the circular manhole structure. After completing the one-hour program, I receive the manhole card. I then take the Meipuru-pu bus to Shukkeien Garden. Despite this being my 10th visit to Hiroshima, it’s my first time entering the garden. Since I purchased the Gururin Pass via Trip.com, which includes free bus rides and admission, I decide to visit. I allocate about 35 minutes to walk around. Cherry blossoms, camellias, plum blossoms, and bamboo groves greet me warmly. At 5 PM, I head to Saijo in Higashihiroshima City to collect a manhole card, then move on to Saka City to get the last manhole card of the day. It’s the only way to get there from Omishima (the island nearby that most people travel from), so check the official website for their times and don’t be late for boarding! Definitely a highlight, and really worth the visit - especially between long days of cycling on the #shimanamikaido. Particularly refreshing on a sunny day when all the rabbits are lounging around :D Bring more bunny food than you think you’ll need, because you’ll be feeding them constantly! And make sure to visit the museum on there, it’s small but it’s packed with interesting artefacts, and there’s a short documentary film included. Ran by some very nice people. Approved!!!
