Winter Hiking Experience The bus stopped at Chusha, and the dozens of steps were all covered in ice. I quickly put on my crampons and carefully climbed up to the Chusha platform. Seeing the teahouse in front of the Okusha torii gate, I knew the cedar tree path was not far away. After arriving at the Suwamon gate, I entered the most scenic section. Tall cedar trees stood on both sides, making people feel very small among them. The boardwalk section at the entrance of Kumano Kodo gave the same feeling. Japan’s ancient temple paths truly feel timeless at a glance. In winter, heavy snow covers everything, obscuring the mountain outlines, but the spiritual atmosphere is very strong. The giant cedars couldn’t bear the continuous snowfall, and large chunks of snow suddenly fell from above. The force of gravity combined with the cold wind made those hit feel like they were caught in a blizzard. Fortunately, I had taken an umbrella from the hotel, which could be used as a walking stick and to shield against sudden snowfalls. The route’s endpoint was the high-altitude Okusha. The snow here was so deep and thick that the steps were completely invisible; I could only climb along the narrow path made by previous hikers. The crampons I bought for a few dollars on TB came in very handy. Upon reaching the endpoint, the lively music abruptly stopped. After a short rest, I returned the same way. The return trip was faster than the way there. I missed the entrance to the walking trail in front of the teahouse and ended up taking the road back to Chusha in one go.

Tested the best section of the Kumano Kodo! This route is definitely worth the trip! Itinerary: Hayatama Taisha Shrine → Kamikura Shrine → Daimonzaka → Nachi Taisha Shrine → Seigan-to Temple → Hiryu Taisha Shrine → Nachi Falls → Kii-Katsuura → Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine After researching buses for ages, I decided to hire a private car, giving me complete control over my time! The 4km hike from Daimonzaka to Nachi Falls is incredibly soothing with its towering trees; I recommend allowing at least 1.5 hours to explore at your own pace. Having lunch at the Kii-Katsuura Seafood Market was delicious but a bit pricey; one set meal wasn't enough! 😂 After lunch, I went to the pier for a foot bath! The solitary torii gate over the sea (Hakuja Benzaiten Shrine) is a must-see; you can even go into the water and see lots of sea cucumbers (PS: I put them back after taking photos; there's a video of the release). Finally, a trip to Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine—the large torii gate is truly breathtaking! There's a small supermarket on the way from the old site to the new one; the Wagyu beef there is incredibly good value. Buy some to take back to the guesthouse for a nice meal—another satisfying day! The overall route is smooth and doesn't involve detours, offering both natural scenery and historical sites. For lazy travelers, a chartered car is the perfect option!

On the first day, I hiked 21km on the Kumano Kodo and was so exhausted I doubted my life choices 😭 I walked from Takijiri-oji to Tsugizakura-oji, climbed 1200 meters, and it took a full 8 hours! I didn’t encounter any bears along the way, and I kept running into other hikers, so it felt okay. The maple leaves are almost fully red! The ginkgo trees are starting to turn yellow too. Next week will be the perfect time to see them, and every snapshot captures that autumn vibe 🍁 But aside from the red leaves, about 90% of the route is pine trees, so the scenery is a bit monotonous.
