Escape the crowds! Come to Lake Tekapo to watch the Milky Way fall to earth—this stargazing guide is amazing!
📍Destination: Lake Tekapo, New Zealand Tekapo Milky Way Stargazing (Lake Tekapo)
🕒Best stargazing time: April to September (Southern Hemisphere winter, clearest skies)
· --
🌌 Why make a special trip to Lake Tekapo to see the stars?
Dear, I know what you’re thinking: “Where can’t you see stars?”
But! Lake Tekapo is truly different!!
This is the world’s first “International Dark Sky Reserve.”
What does that mean? It’s one of the top places on earth for stargazing!
No light pollution, no tall buildings,
Even the streetlights are specially designed not to interfere with stargazing🌙
The night I arrived, I looked up—
Oh my! I’ve never seen so many stars in my life!
Dense and dazzling,
It felt like I could reach out and grab a handful.
At that moment, I finally understood what “the Milky Way pouring down” means🌠

📝 Super practical stargazing guide (pure tips!)
🕘 Timing is half the success!
· Months: Best from April to September, stars are brightest and clearest
· Dates: Choose around the new moon! The smaller the moon, the brighter the stars
· Time: 10 PM to 2 AM is the golden period
· Weather: Must be clear skies! Clouds mean wasted trip
Last time I foolishly went during a full moon,
The moon was as bright as a spotlight,
The stars all “hid,” a painful lesson!😭
📍 Location is everything!
· Church of the Good Shepherd: classic spot, but crowded (want photos without people? Keep reading!)
· Mount John: high altitude, amazing views, but closed at night
· Lakeshore line: my secret base! Walk 500 meters to either side of the church, fewer people and beautiful views
Exclusive tip: I found a small beach east of the church,
Almost no one there! Lie on the sand and watch the Milky Way,
Listening to the gentle lapping of the lake,
That feeling—amazing!💖
📸 Even beginners can take stunning photos!
As a photography newbie,
I was super anxious before the trip,
But I found these tips are enough:
1. Tripod is a must! No tripod, no star photos
2. Camera settings:
· Aperture wide open (lowest F number)
· ISO 1600-3200
· Exposure 20-30 seconds
3. Phones can do it too! Huawei and Apple flagship phones now have star modes
4. Focus tip: manually focus to infinity, then turn back just a little
Tested and true: I used a Sony A7III + tripod,
F2.8, ISO 2500, 25-second exposure,
The Milky Way photos made me a legend on social media!👑
👗 What to wear? Help, it’s really cold!
The first night I went out in a thin jacket,
Result—frozen stiff!🥶
The South Island nights are truly cold,
Especially when you stand still for a long time taking photos.
Must-have list:
· Down jacket or thick coat
· Hat, scarf, gloves (if your fingers freeze and can’t press the shutter, don’t blame me!)
· Heat packs all over
· Thermos with hot water, lifesaver!

💫 My 24 hours at Lake Tekapo (timeline share)
4 PM: Arrive at Lake Tekapo
First sight of that milky blue lake,
I was instantly blown away! So beautiful!
Quickly sat down at a lakeside café,
Drinking hot chocolate, watching the lake view,
Life’s pleasures~☕
6 PM: Check in at Church of the Good Shepherd
The light is softest then, perfect for photos,
No photos inside the church, respect local culture
8 PM: Have a good meal!
Recommend the lakeside Japanese restaurant,
The salmon is so fresh it feels like it’s dancing in your mouth💃
10 PM: The star feast begins!
Join a stargazing tour (highly recommend Dark Sky Project),
Professional guides tell constellation stories,
Look through telescopes at Saturn’s rings, speechless from awe!
12 AM: Capture the dream Milky Way photo,
Shivering in the cold wind but completely satisfied
Next morning: Sleep in,
Go to Astro Cafe for coffee,
Sit in the “world’s most beautiful café,”
Overlooking the whole lake view, life complete!🌈

❤️ Personal feelings time
Honestly, stargazing at Lake Tekapo
Is not just “scenery watching.”
When the whole Milky Way stretches across the sky,
When starlight reflects on the milky blue lake,
When shooting stars occasionally streak the night...
That shock hits the soul,
I suddenly felt so small,
Everyday worries, work stress,
Are nothing on a cosmic scale.
A girl in my group started crying watching the stars,
She said, “I never thought the starry sky could be so beautiful it makes you cry.”
And I, at that moment, made a wish—
Every year, find a place like this,
To remind myself to look up at the stars,
Not just stare at the sixpence at my feet🌟
