I specifically chose to visit in November and found it to be the most comfortable season in Yunnan—fewer people, blue skies, golden ginkgo leaves, red-billed gulls returning, and flights and hotels 30% to 50% cheaper than peak season. Here is an 8-day itinerary based on what you want to see. See ginkgo trees · Gudong town, Tengchong In mid to late November, Tengchong’s ginkgo village reaches its best viewing season. Over 3,000 ginkgo trees turn yellow at the same time, with the oldest trees over 600 years old. The whole village is covered in gold, with fallen leaves on rooftops, roads, and courtyards. It’s recommended to stay one night, as the color of the ginkgo leaves is completely different at dawn and dusk. See gulls · Cuihu Park, Kunming Every November, red-billed gulls fly from Siberia to Kunming for the winter. Cuihu Park is the best spot in Kunming to watch the gulls, with the lake covered in white gulls. The ginkgo avenue at Yunnan University also turns golden in November, on the same sightseeing route as Jinma Biji Archway. See snow mountains · Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Meili Snow Mountain November is the most beautiful time of year at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain—the snow on the peak is thickest and the weather is most stable. The water in Blue Moon Valley is the bluest, and the mountain reflections are clearest. At Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountain has the highest chance of showing the “sunlit snow-capped mountain” in November, when the sunrise lights up the peak and the whole mountain turns golden. See ancient towns · Off-season in Dali and Lijiang In November, Dali and Lijiang have only one-third of the visitors compared to peak season. Cycling along the west shore of Erhai Lake is the best experience, a 40 km ride from Caicun to Xizhou, with the lake on your right and mountains on your left. Stay one night in Shaxi, where the streets are empty after 9 PM. Lijiang Old Town is more atmospheric at night than during the day, and Shuhe Ancient Town is quieter than Dayan. In the late 8th century, Emperor Seiwa fell seriously ill. According to legend, the temple's monks prayed for his recovery, and the illness soon subsided. In gratitude, the emperor bestowed the name "Katsuo-ji" upon the temple, which translates to "Temple of Victory." That said, it doesn't just mean victory over an opponent. It symbolizes the power to overcome one's own fears, illnesses, life's hardships, and achieve one's goals. That's why people come here not simply to wish for good luck, but to pray for inner strength and success in any endeavor. Right from the start, you can spot the first tiny Daruma dolls hiding among the plants and stones. ⛩️Main Temple (Hondo) The main sanctuary of the complex is dedicated to the Bodhisattva Kannon. People come here to pray for health, success, family well-being, and the fulfillment of wishes. A calm and solemn atmosphere always prevails here. 🔹Daruma Dolls The main symbol of Katsuo-ji is the red Daruma dolls. Traditionally, a visitor buys a doll, makes a wish, and paints in one eye. Once the wish is granted, they paint in the second eye and return the Daruma to the temple. Because of this, you can see thousands of these figures in all different sizes throughout the grounds. Some stand alone, others are lined up in entire rows, and many are intentionally hidden in the most unexpected places. By the way, I bought a Daruma keychain as a souvenir and attached it to my bag. At first glance, it looks incomplete, but as you walk around the grounds, you can find six stamp stations. Each stamp adds a piece to the picture, and gradually a colorful illustration featuring Katsuo-ji symbols appears on the postcard. This isn't just a fun activity; it's a great designated route through the temple: by following the path from one stamp to the next, you'll pass by almost all the main attractions of the complex and won't miss the most beautiful spots. 💡My Tip If possible, arrive right at opening time—around 8:00 AM. There are very few visitors on the grounds at this hour, allowing you to peacefully soak in the atmosphere, take beautiful photos without the crowds, and enjoy a quiet stroll around the temple. Mangshi, a Dai-flavored town on the China-Myanmar border, has no tour groups! The golden pagoda dazzles under the sun, and the silver pagoda’s reflection looks like Chiang Mai. At Bingwu village’s morning market, you can buy a bunch of tropical fruit for just a few yuan, with spicy and sour flavors that whet your appetite, and ice-cold puluda drinks. You’ll be the only tourist in the whole town—pure bliss. Weishan is just 40 minutes from Dali but feels like another world. No bars, no trendy shops, just locals soaking up the sun. Start your day with pork and rice noodles paired with a stick of dough, then climb Weibao Mountain with the ancient town at your feet—this is the real “I own a place in Dali” feeling. Lufeng has dinosaur fossils right beneath your feet! Heijing ancient town is tucked in a mountain valley, with stone-paved streets polished shiny by footsteps and the aroma of salt-braised pork filling the alleys. Wutai Mountain’s forest canopy blocks out the sun, making it feel like a natural air conditioner in summer. Then there’s Guangnan Bamei, accessible only by boat through karst caves. Once you exit the cave, you’ll see rice fields and old houses—this is exactly the Peach Blossom Land Tao Yuanming wrote about! Mile’s red brick kaleidoscope buildings look like a fairy tale, and the underground hot springs will relax you completely. The high-speed train makes it easy to go anytime. A few tips: The high-speed train goes directly to Jianshui and Mile; driving is more flexible for the others. Visit Guangnan and Lufeng to cool off in summer, chase the ginkgo in Tengchong in autumn, and soak up the sun in Mangshi and Menglian in winter. The aftereffect was so strong that when I got home and took a hot shower, I still caught a whiff of sulfur from the hot springs😭✨ Who gets it! In July, escaping the sticky southern rainy season, I headed to the border’s top city. The 22℃ evening breeze wrapped in banana leaves slipped inside my collar. The volcanic hot sea, Heshun ancient village, and Gaoligong Mountain formed a slow-life painting of the borderlands. Slipping on moss and falling covered in mud is super embarrassing 2. Hot sea steam temperature is very high. Don’t reach into the spring hole carelessly. Burning your fingers will hurt for days 3. Wetland grass rafts look soft but hide holes. Don’t step on wild grass areas that haven’t been stepped on before. One misstep and you’ll fall into the water, soaking half your body instantly 4. Border villages require respecting local customs. Don’t touch the Wa sacred tree’s ritual items. Causing misunderstandings is too awkward! July in Tengchong gathered the softest mist and the most moisturizing mountain breeze of the borderlands. Many people associate Tengchong with hot springs and ancient towns, thinking it’s a place mainly for older travelers. I used to think so too, until I spent a few days exploring deeply— Tengchong is seriously underrated! It has volcanoes, hot springs, ancient towns, wetlands, primeval forests, and a variety of hidden boutique hotels. The best part? Few people! Low prices! Slow pace! In July, Tengchong’s weather is around 25°C, neither hot nor cold, with occasional light rain. The air smells of fresh grass and earth, very comfortable. Plus, July is the off-season, so there are fewer tourists and hotels are affordable, offering great value. 🏨 The magical hotels hidden in Tengchong This time I stayed at several hotels with different styles, each beautiful in its own way. Let me share them with you: Secret cliffside hotel This is my favorite! It’s truly built on the edge of a cliff—absolutely breathtaking. Every room has huge floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace. Open the window and you see the valley and sea of clouds. In the morning, the mist floats right beneath your feet, making you feel like you’re living in a fairyland. The hotel’s infinity pool is also incredibly photogenic. Swimming facing the valley is such a refreshing experience. There are lounge chairs by the pool, perfect for lying down after a swim, watching the clouds roll by, and feeling time slow down. The rooms also have private hot spring baths. Soaking in the hot spring while gazing at the mountain views—this is truly the peak of life. Hidden luxury homestay in the ancient town If you like the vibe of ancient towns, you must try staying in a homestay in Heshun Ancient Town. The one I stayed at is on the edge of the town, with lotus ponds and rice fields right outside the window—very poetic. The homestay is a renovated old house, preserving traditional architecture but with modern facilities, making it very comfortable. At night, when the town lights up, red lanterns reflect in the water, creating a special atmosphere. Sitting in the courtyard sipping tea and listening to the insects chirp is incredibly relaxing. Hot spring villa resort For a high-end hot spring vacation experience, you must stay in a hot spring villa at least once. These villas are standalone with private courtyards, private hot spring pools, and small gardens, offering excellent privacy. You can soak in the hot spring anytime, no need to share with others. The morning light is perfect for photos. Beihai Wetland grass raft This is so much fun! Beihai Wetland is a highland volcanic dam lake, with thick grass rafts floating on the surface. You can stand on them and use bamboo poles to paddle, like drifting on water. In July, the wetland blooms with purple irises, very beautiful. Paddling through the flower sea on the grass raft makes you feel like a little fairy. Gaoligong Mountain hiking Outdoor lovers must hike Gaoligong Mountain! Known as the "World Species Gene Bank," it’s home to diverse plants and animals. On the trail, you often see squirrels and birds, and if you’re lucky, monkeys too. There are routes of varying difficulty to choose from. I took an easier path through primeval forest with fresh air that felt like it cleansed my lungs. Deep exploration of Heshun Ancient Town Don’t just stroll through Heshun Ancient Town and leave. There are many interesting spots hidden inside.
