Phuket: Is It Worth a Visit? My Experience.
A year ago, I spent three months in Phuket. Here are my impressions, along with some practical tips.
Phuket makes for an excellent vacation destination, boasting stunning beaches, well-developed infrastructure, and an abundance of cafes and hotels. Everything is incredibly convenient and easy to navigate, especially if you're just visiting for a holiday.
To be entirely honest, though, I found the island a bit dull. Just a month in, I was already missing Bali—the two places have completely different vibes and paces of life. Geared heavily toward tourism, Phuket is much more about comfortable beach lounging and nightlife than it is about culture or adventure.
It’s also worth noting that many of the truly breathtaking spots aren't actually on the island itself. They’re either on neighboring islands or quite a distance away. Seasonality plays a massive role, too: the rainy season kicks off in spring and summer, which can seriously complicate travel and boat tours.
Among the must-see locations, the Similan Islands really stood out to me. They are arguably some of Thailand's most beautiful islands, featuring pristine white sand and crystal-clear waters. Keep in mind, however, that they are closed for a few months each year (roughly from May to October), so a summer visit is off the table.
The Phi Phi Islands are another popular choice. If you want to capture that picture-perfect view, it's actually better to go in the middle of the day. While mornings are less crowded, the lighting can make the scenery look a bit flat and even slightly underwhelming. If you find yourself on Phi Phi Don, climbing to the viewpoint is an absolute must. There are three levels, and I highly recommend making your way to all of them—the perspectives vary slightly from each spot and are well worth the trek.
Another spot that definitely deserves a place on your itinerary is the Samet Nangshe Viewpoint. It's one of the most gorgeous lookout points, offering sweeping views of the bay and limestone karsts, which are especially spectacular at sunrise.
As for Phuket itself, I absolutely loved the Karon Beach and Rawai areas. They offer beautiful beaches, a lovely atmosphere, and great scenic overlooks. For a leisurely stroll, Phuket Old Town is ideal, featuring vibrant buildings, cozy cafes, and a much more authentic city vibe.
You also can't miss the night markets. They are a staple of island life, packed with street food, local crafts, and an incredibly lively energy.
All in all, I see Phuket as a place tailored more for beach retreats, comfort, and partying rather than long-term living or deep cultural immersion. But if you're hunting for a beautiful, hassle-free resort for your next vacation, it fits the bill perfectly.
