The whole town is white!
🌸A super comprehensive guide to a one-day trip to Thorn, Netherlands.
.
🌟 History:
Thorn, known as the "White City" of the Netherlands, hides an unusual history. At the end of the 18th century, Thorn suffered a heavy blow under French rule. In 1794, the French invasion broke the tranquility here, and the nobles fled, leaving empty mansions. The subsequent tax policy forced the poor to replace large windows with small ones and cover them with white paint, forming today's unique "scars of poverty" style. Walking on the streets of Thorn, you can feel the traces left by that period of history.🏰

Thorn, the White City of the Netherlands
Nestled in Limburg, Thorn is a charming Dutch village known as Het Witte Stadje (The White City). Its distinctive whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, and historic atmosphere make it a picturesque destination. Once a mini-principality ruled by noblewomen, Thorn retains its regal charm with landmarks like the Abbey Church (Stiftskerk), which dates back to the 10th century.
Strolling through Thorn feels like stepping back in time. The white façades, a result of a historic tax policy that favored painted houses, contrast beautifully with the surrounding countryside. Visitors can enjoy local Limburgse vlaai (fruit pie), explore the Museum Land van Thorn, or take a scenic walk along the Maas River.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Thorn’s timeless beauty makes it a must-visit gem in the Netherlands.#europetrip #citydaytours

A small white town like in a fairy tale
#BeautifulPhotoTourism
Thorn is a small village in the south of the Netherlands that stands out with its white houses. It looks beautiful and different from other cities in the same region. This city was originally a monastery for women (convent) founded around the 10th century. The first female abbot was Benedicta, who ruled together with the noble women who were laypeople. It then expanded until it became a city. Until the end of the 18th century, the French occupied Thorn and used a tax collection system that calculated the size and number of windows in each house. The villagers then covered some of the windows with bricks and plastered them with cement and painted them white to hide them. This is the origin of the city with only white buildings everywhere.
🏠 Places to visit:
➡️ Het land van Thorn (The land of Thorn)
This is a museum that exhibits the history of Thorn in detail. There is also an audio guide telling the stories of important buildings that you can take out and listen to while walking around the city. Therefore, this is the first place you should stop by.
➡️ St Michael’s Church
The church that is the starting point of this city took 450 years to build and has been renovated in a Baroque-Gothic style until it became as beautiful as it is today. There is an entrance fee for this church.
➡️ Old Town
Honestly, if you are not interested in history or have limited time, just walking around the city and taking pictures at various spots with an empty mind is fun. It takes about 1-2 hours to walk around.
🥘 Where to eat:
We chose to try the national favorite of the Dutch, pancakes, at De Pannekoekenbakker. This shop has 15 branches nationwide. There are hundreds of pancakes to choose from on the menu. Plus, the branch in this city is a beautiful old preserved building. You can sit back and relax and enjoy the atmosphere for a long time.
